      @@Oliver-wv4bd how do u manage to revise after school? what was ur technique of understanding the concept? and some general advice on how do u motivate ur self to keep studying n not get distracted

    • @Oliver-wv4bd
      @Oliver-wv4bd ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@lamiakhadim8958 Understanding the concepts in Physics was actually my exact method of revision for the majority of my time spent studying it. The two very much link hand-in-hand, I've found that if you can comprehend the deeper reasoning as to *why* something is, then remembering *what* that something is becomes far easier. It's true for any subject. But our national curriculum has so much content stuffed into it, that it fails to provide teachers with ample time to go into any meaningful level of detail when teaching said content. That's why many students struggle with more abstract subjects such as Mathematics (as well as those rooted in Mathematics, like Physics), because they've been taught various concepts and methods for solving questions, but have never been shown why or how it all works, and it can often be difficult to figure that out for yourself from intuition alone.
      In other words, the way you learn Physics, and any other subject at school for that matter, is by actually *learning* it. Don't just follow along with what's told in lessons and accept it all as fact, and don't disregard anything that you're even a little unsure of by leaving it till later, because later is too late. Do your own independent study and research on what you're taught, and really try and understand all that's discussed in each lesson as deeply as you possibly can. Keep on top of doing this for the new content on a weekly basis and you'll thank yourself so much when seemingly obtuse notions suddenly open themselves up to you like they never have before. Things will get clearer and simpler, and the struggle will gradually diminish, until you find that all the new stuff you learn comes so much more naturally to you than it used to, and you'll no longer have to work as hard to understand it. You'll gain such a massive appreciation for what you're studying, and it'll become so much more satisfying to apply your knowledge to solve problems, because you'll be seeing those problems at a far more fundamental level with greater sophistication. And if you aren't sure yet what you may want to pursue after A-Levels, this method will help you discover where your passions lie.
      So when you're taught things in class, go home and try to look them up a little bit, just to see where they come from. It doesn't have to be for long, you don't have to master Physics or anything lol, but knowing little tidbits here and there to support and act as a backbone for the stuff you're being assessed on is crucial. They may not seem like much individually, but I promise you they'll come together and build up your picture of the subject as a whole in such a gargantuan way over time.
      Now, if there's something you're taught that you don't understand, even if it's just a little thing that illudes you in an otherwise familiar system, do something about it as soon as you can. I've found that going online again has aided me the best in these situations. It may take a few differently-worded Google searches and some browsing to find a website which addresses the specific thing you're looking for, but it's almost certainly out there, and if it isn't, you can post about it on a forum like PhysicsExchange to get answers from people. However, if you think you have good Physics teachers who are willing to help and who possess knowledge beyond the syllabus, then I'd go to them regarding a problem you have first. It'll be so much easier to articulate what you're struggling with via an in-person interaction, and they'll be able to walk through things step-by-step with you, with the ability for you to ask follow-up questions all the while. Unfortunately, I didn't feel my own Physics teachers were good enough to really be able to do that for me, and if you find that yours don't give you explanations you're satisfied with either, don't settle for that. You'll be far better off finding out what you need to in your own instead, as opposed to getting told something by them that's at the very best hand-wavy and tenuous, and at the very worst just straight up wrong. In this regard, if you think your teachers aren't giving you the quality of teaching you're looking for, ask your parents if they could get a tutor for you. There's no shame in it (it's not like you have to tell anybody anyway), and I myself will admit that I had a tutor of my own for Maths / Further Maths A-Level, and I wouldn't have been able to achieve an A* in those subjects if it wasn't for him making up for what my teachers lacked. This, combined with my own study at home on the side, turned me from somebody who was unsure about whether or not they even liked Maths and who was literally crying about how difficult Further Maths would be at the start of Year 12, into someone who now considers Maths to be their favourite academic pursuit, which I now gain immense pleasure from doing. By the middle of Year 13 I had stopped needing to see my tutor every week for regular sessions, and only arranged lessons here and there at perhaps less than a quarter of the rate.
      All in all, the one crucial thing you have to do is make sure you understand everything you're taught, rather than simply learning a method and leaving it at that. Don't leave it all up to school to teach you everything, because even though it should, it almost certainly won't. But university won't either if you choose to go, so learning how to study independently now will only stand you in good stead for the future.
      If you put the effort in to really learn things at the time of them being taught, then it'll all get so much easier for you. And your revision will also fall to a minimum - people often use revision as opportunity to relearn what they didn't get previously, which is why it takes them ages and they hate doing it. That's not what revision is all about, it should simply be you reminding yourself of what you already know. A quick flick-through of your books is all it really takes if you've made sufficient notes along the way during your own study, as well as completing as many past papers as possible in order to practice exam technique and application of your (now extensive!) knowledge.
      That's what there is to it. Everything I've said might sound pretty vague and general, but I'd be happy to give you examples of how it can be applied to Physics in particular. If you're struggling with certain concepts, or how to solve specific types of questions, or if you simply have a weird question that you think might sound stupid, I'd be more than happy to help you with any of that. :) I can also provide my own A-Level Physics notes for you to use, which I tried to make as detailed and extensive as possible for myself, even if some of the information they contain is superfluous a result 😂.
      As for keeping yourself motivated, I don't think I did anything in particular. My motivation came from a fervent desire to understand everything I was getting taught and to document that so my future-self wouldn't have to work as hard (and because I kinda liked the idea of having a comprehensive workbook of everything you would ever have to know for a school subject). I'm sure Google has more tips for how to stay determined and avoid distractions, like putting your phone on aeroplane mode as you work.
      But do bare in mind that you don't have to work too hard. Yes, you have to put a lot of effort in, but no more than you need to understand the concepts. Going above and beyond should only be done if you enjoy doing it (if so, that's great!), because it won't aid you in the exam. If there's something you learn that you understand already, you dont need to spend the time on it. If you do want to study something, focus on what you're weak at. But make sure to live your own life and don't let school consume you - two years of torturing yourself is not worth a letter on a page, I promise you that from the bottom of my heart. Work at a level that challenges you to improve, but which you can sustain too, and success will merely become part of your routine! 😁
      I'm sorry for writing so much, I hope it's helped you outin some small way. Thank you for reading this far, and get back to me if you have any questions (Physics-related or otherwise) - I'll gladly lend any advice or knowledge I can. :)

    You know what, you are bang on the money when you say that GCSEs are very different to A levels. With A levels, you are expected to be more independent and that’s why many students struggle with the step up. Keeping up with the work and trying to read a little ahead with the textbooks plus practicing extra questions in the text book will help. Plus past papers when you feel you’ve understood the content. Very important also to look after your health and get enough sleep, eat healthy and do some things which you enjoy in your free time to relax. Good luck to all the students here, your efforts will yield results!

    Literally I can relate to having people in my Alevel classes who need to be humbled. My chemistry class is the worst because half the people who do chem also do Alevel maths and get so stuck up about it. They think they're always right

    Great advice, to the point, straight up.
    It's about internalising the information and transferring the information from book to brain. Skip the unnecessary making of notes. It's pointless. Test yourself thoroughly and understand and process the knowledge on a deep level.
