That 9000 has arguably the best Saab engine of the lot B234R. They are seriously strong 400hp on stock internals is quite possible. The torque is incredible. They also seems to last forever, had a classic 900 Carlsson and I did 300,000 (hard miles) in it then sold it to my mate who put another 200,000 (to date) on it all with original internals, just oil change every 6,000. Amazing machines!

I'm sure you probably know this but you need to put dielectric grease on direct ignition cassette holes where the spark plug goes. It makes sure that the spark stays inside of that rubber boot. Love the car. Have several Saab 9000 myself.

Thanks for getting into this car and sharing the details. DJ_PaulTUK, in his comments below, has a decent understanding of this age of car and you're doing ok - so far.
    Supportive suggestions:
    1) That's a TCS car - make sure you carefully clean a) the throttle body flap regularly and the electrical contacts on the side, b) the valves on the bulkhead and inner wheel-arch, including the electrical contacts c) the coolant tubes in and out of the throttle body, d)the air-mass-meter with the electrical cleaner as well - even with the auto-burn-off mode, cleaning the carbon off the platinum filament is a good investment - and the connectors, of course.
    2) Clean the big, round electrical connector contacts halfway down the bulkhead - they often go green and will throw weird "check engine/radiator/oil" error messages.
    3) When you replaced the vacuum lines, did you remember the one to the turbo boost gauge? Look for cracking at the joints/interfaces in the bulkhead which gives a great whoosh sound, but kills boost. 9000's are useless when the vacuum lines go bad - replace with suitable size flexible diesel-fuel line hose and they will never go bad again
    4) Make sure the one way valve between the cylinder head and bulkhead TCS valve is good and the right way around. Seen them killing the performance too. Similarly, all the 'top-hat' rubber bushings in and out of the rocker cover need to be nice and tight - when they start to go soft - change them. They will kill your drive-ability as well.
    5) >50% chance the APC valve is dead or dying. Terribly unreliable. I have stopped looking for new T5-type valves - not sure they are available any longer and even if they are, they are as consumable as plugs and filters. Replace with a manual boost valve and adjust so that boost only goes no more than half way into the red on full boost and you'll be OK. It will be a dance between adjusting the waste gate actuator and the boost control valve to get it right. More than that and you'll probably be wondering why your engine has died because the knock sensor won't be able to retard the boost and ignition to save the engine from detonation... A failed APC valve may be why your boost was on base value. I'd also check what your mechanic did and that he hasn't bypassed it and cranked up boost. Doesn't help drive-ability or longevity. Whatever anyone says here, cranking up the boost by virtue of lengthening the waste gate actuator valve rod is not a great way to keep this car driving for a long time. If you want to save the engine, with greater boost, run the engine on the highest octane fuel you can buy - do not skimp on that. It actually provides slightly better distance per litre at the same time per my experience at least.
    6) I should have a 'spare' set of matched APC red controller and fueling computers back in the UK if you ever want to venture into that arena. I also have an Abbott upgrade intercooler that did one trip of 750 miles in a 1993 T5 Trionic before I broke the car due to a T5 ECU problem.
    7) If you have someone with an ISAT (best) or have to live with TECH-2, then ask them to clear the TCS and fueling system (using a 973 code) which clears the adaptation values. It resets the computer and boost values which allows the car to 'learn' how you drive it. Makes a big difference on the car behaviour.
    8) Check the settings on the cruise control cut-off switches on the clutch and brake pedal, that they cut off at the right point in the pedal travel - the shafts are on a miniature ratchet system which you have to reset if they are disturbed. Many service techs have no idea and the switches are then wrongly set (activation tabs usually bent out of shape is a good indicator) which throws a wonky signal to the ETS control computer which then argues with the ETC and fueling systems.
    9) Watch the tiny vacuum hose which runs under the TCS throttle body - often will split or disconnect, leading to shitty idling and running but not throw up a TCS CTRL light.
    10) Make certain that the earth straps to the engine are clean and tight - both the one from the battery to the gearbox and the one from the top engine mount to the cylinder head.
    11) I can't quite see, but it looks like the DI plug may be the old system, rather than the revised version where the final cable was linked through two extension connectors on the side of the battery tray. The old system, where the DI plug was wired directly into the wiring loom could end up being damaged mechanically or overheated as there was not enough play in the wire - if the change was made at the Dealer as a recall, there should be a figure 8 etched or scribed onto the recall plate up beside the electrical connectors underneath the right bonnet hinge. If not, you can still find the wiring loom adapter kit on the well known auction site...
    12) Make sure the threads on the Lambda sensor are clean. They can often get corroded and the sensor does not earth correctly leading to the car running rich and poor drive-ability. You can run an extra earth strap and use a jubilee clip to tie it to the outside of the sensor.
    13) Make sure you do an A/C calibration and check for errors. Believe it or not, the AC is linked to the ETS system (to adjust idle when the compressor comes on) and if the ACC controller is not calibrated, that impacts the way the car drives. Press the AUTO and sideways arrows together (bottom right hand button - it will need two hands to be comfortable) and hold for 5 or so seconds and it will go into self-calibrate mode. If there are no errors, you'll get a 0 on the screen. If not, it will tell you how many errors you have which will require electronic interrogation to diagnose. You cannot diagnose that problem using the contact switch and check-engine light flash codes on a 1990 onwards vehicle.
    14) Bizarrely, take a membership out for the USA Saab Owners Club. Not expensive and the beauty is that they have full online access to the SAAB TIS documentation which includes most of the workshop manuals for the 9000 from 1986 onwards. If they don't have the information, I usually have the manuals they don't have. It has taken 30+ years of scouring all the sources to find them and the diagnostic computers after SAAB Sweden told the dealers to return all the ISAT's to Sweden in 1996, for dumping in the trash, when they moved to OBD-II. Not sure what Swedish is for 'boneheads' but they were following EU and American orders... :((

The red DI cassette on B2*4 engines also do the knock detect. they pass 60v across the plug, which is detected only when the plasma from the spark occurs, or pre ignition (knock) happens.
They are oil filled to cool the coils too so should be stored upright, or left for a while before you start the car.
Next service, remove the sump pan and clean the strainer. only debris or no oil kills a Saab. they love boost.

    • @clarkwilson3505
      @clarkwilson3505 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Oil starvation was not an issue on these engines - only the later versions put into the 9-3 and 9-5 where the strainer would block and the engine go kaput. Open up the rocker cover and provided the oil changes have been done regularly on this car, the heads will be a nice bronze/silver colour, no carbon buildup.

I am surprised to see it's rocking a 2.3L B234 engine on a 80s body. I thought until now that old bodies came with the B202i, which is shared by the 900. I have 3 of these beasts, one of which is a B202I engine that has blown a headgasket long ago and I'm putting it to rest. The rest are post 90s, new body and B234 engines, but my newest has an 80s body. Wonder how many of these have been built, they were clearly a transition phase. Just an odd car built out of whatever they had on hand at the time.

It can be fitted with a red DI/APC box. That is a factory tuning box that will increase the engine power from 200hp/330Nm to 220hp/334Nm.
I had that in my 9000 CC 2.3Turbo. And that was a nice car to drive! 😃 The same tuning box will end up in my 9000 CS 2.3turboS, when I am done with my rustrepair. 😊

Yes I guess that is probably what the output of this 9000 is now. I have the same car - 1991 9k 2.3 T cc manual - with the factory tuning kit and it is crazy fast. But you won't get 250 bhp unless you are upgrading your hardware, and it looks like the hardware is stock. But it is not the engine nor the turbo you want to spare, it is the gearbox, which is the weak part of the setup. Nonetheless: great car! I'm guessing it was bought at LvB, or maybe the previous owner bought it there. In that case I still have the sales photos, if Retroschaft is interested.

How did he "Increase" the boost ?. As its impossible with DI-APC, without remapping the ECU ROM. I think your mechanic made all that up. Other than checking base boost is correct at 0.45 bar, there is nothing that can be done. And no you cannot make 300 or more BHP with yours. Not unless you rip out all the old DI-APC stuff and retrofit Trionic5.

My '91 9000 2.3 CD Carlsson runs just a shade under 300bhp with the Abbott Racing upgrades, including intercooler, air filter, ported and gas-flowed head, Abbott bypass, APC manual over-ride valve, exhaust and most importantly the 305mm big brake upgrade. Never rely on a standard 9000 brake set to stop you on full chat.
Abbott takes the APC box and fueling computer out and flashes them both together. You can't upgrade just the APC or the fueling computer separately - they have to be a matched pair. However, that's as far as I would ever want to go with the upgrade, because, without the later gearbox upgrades introduced into the factory-supplied replacements or a first-class gearbox rebuilder, you'll pull the pinion bearings out in a heartbeat. Been there and done that in a standard 91 Carlsson 2.3.

How do you know its been tuned ?. Its a DI-APC car and there is hardly anyone around now that can read these Roms. Apart from me and a few others. Its possible it might have a later 1992 CS Carlsson DI-APC ECU. On the 2.3 these gave 225bhp. DI-APC has a boost cut at 1.2 bar, so you cannot really turn them up, or defeat APC. It's fully explained in the video but it was probably tuned by one of the previous owners. No idea what they did but the car was running on very low boost (about 0.5 bar) and was supposedly increased to 1.0 bar to make use of the engine map. There was a noticeable difference in performance and I wasn't charged or anything for a new map. Since then the fuel consumption has actually dropped significantly and the car runs a lot smoother so it's definetely more efficient than it was before.
All I truly know is that the car feels, sounds, runs and drives fantastic. And I'm loving it 😃
