NOTE: The Skare ii Mid is a dedicated winter boot. I wouldn't advise removing its 3mm felt liner and trying to hike in it because the boot will be way too loose then. This is the reason I use the unlined Tjakke Mid which is more dedicated for use outside of winter.
On longer hikes, when I get to camp or get home, I always remove the Skare ii Mid inner liner to allow it to air out. I would recommend for longer trips to purchase a second liner for rotation.

Tjakke :When measuring for this boot make sure you use the centimetres only no matter your country... Also this boot although said to be more room made in forefoot of a narrow boot, just remember that it's narrow by scandanavian standard not narrow by UK for example standard's, this boot is very roomy throughout and that can lead to foot fatigue because of too much room and that's with me wearing very thick socks.. I wear a UK 12 but size 47 is not the way to go I've a narrow foot and 295cm length then they say at x2 cm... 46 boot would have been the better size....... These boots are nice and light, they've good support from rocks in the arch section, they flex quite abit and aren't stiff in the fore foot so you may have to work more in your hike than for example a B level boot like the meindl vakuum..
It's an excellent relief when you walk through mud and water in these Lundhags and know that you've less cleaning to do upon the most section unlike an all leather boot... The shaggy section so far is stiff it can feel like you've wellingtons on if your size wrongly by even a size up i haven't thick calves but unless they are thick shins I think it will do the same.. They can feel floppy in the forefoot with this composite material but it's such a relief to know zero water can enter that section of the boot and that i don't have to clean it like leather, the leather shaft on the top 2/3rds of the boot is all you will have to treat and whenever you do only use the wax not the other options, they will darken and soften the leather shaft... These boots are comfortable especially when sized correctly, I would have liked them to be more stiff underneath but maybe my feet muscles may adjust with wear and strengthen so it isn't an issue, I'm used to boots that do more work for you.. Lundhags have such boots too...
This boot is pleasantly high in the overall level of the "shaft" where your leg goes in brilliant and higher than eg the meindl vakuum.. This boot height is perfect for me and saved me from having to buy a heavy high boot.... The sole choice of vibram cuturam? (can't remember spelling) Is exceptional and if it lasts long then it's perfect.. THIS IS THE ONLY VIBRAM SOLE I HAVE EVER HAD UPON ANY FOOTWEAR THAT DELIVERY IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED.. This sole incredibly gripped on totally wet smooth rock all mud wet surfaces the only surface my foot slipped on was when wet rock had algae and moss upon it.. I couldn't believe the grip and security from this choice of sole.. I've alot of costly footwear from many brands whether its Solomon or Meindl Garmont many more NON of the vibram choice of soles delivers like this choice but yet reading the marketing you'd be led to trust so.... Well done to lundhags for delivering..
I would not say this model can deliver for long hikes of even more than 10 miles and be comfortable i think its need a more rigid support especially in the forefoot for that also like i said the boot is too wide once you leave the heel section going towards the front this will effect also edging along things.. The quality of the tongue and booties high very good to section to keep water out. I think the lacing could benefit me from being able to pull closer the mid section, the lacing never felt tight enough for foot stability...
Sincerely this is a nice concept of boot.. I think people should really research the models and info they can give regarding the grades of rubber, leather, materials from lundhags as they all serve different needs and uses, that way you will end up with the exact model... I do recommend the company and I'm happy to have a boot that's not high maintenance and just premium... Getting accessories for this brand can prove difficult as they are almost always out of stock... And do not mistake the grease for the WAX these three layer boots should be waxed although it's not compulsory.. I also used gaiters to minimise the cleaning upon my leather..

Great review! You have me convinced to look look up Lundhags for my new winter boots 👍. A tip from a swede, if something is spelled with tj such as tjakke. Then it's pronounced with a ch sound. Swedish pronunciations can be hard, it even has me tripped up from time to time 😆

Going dubble sock is the way to go with this kind of boot, 1 layer boots of this kind are to be warn all year with a dubble sock set up. One extra set of dubble socks in the pack and swap when on break to physically remove the moisture. Tieing the used socks around the neck inside the jacket for drying is a good swedish army trick

If you have a fire when you get to camp then by all means a single layer boot is fine with or without double socks, at least for me from my experience. I still rather have my felt insole version to be on the safe side of survival.
When I go for survival training courses in the arctic, I can tell you right now I won't be bringing any of my unlined boots.

@@The_gear_review_channel it might be my english thats not 100. I did not try to make a case for not using the winter dedicated boots they are awesome. Just wanted to add that 1 layer boots are often used and sized like you have to be used with two socks. It both give the cushion and the ability to remove moisture at break on longer marching, rotating socks both in summer and colder climtes. For artic stuff more insulation is needed ofc

Jaure 2 high, heavyweight ultra-durable monsterboots, these i my n.1 choice for backpacking. Then my old faithfull Lundhags Polar Quest. They are similar to your winter boots, but with high shaft. Hello Gav! I'm very glad I stumbled across this video because I am right now on the verge of buying the Tjakke boots for myself. I work in the field of archaeology and having a boot that is durable, comfortable AND repairable is an absolute must have. I have only one question - are the Tjakke boots true to size? I usually wear a size 46 which fits me comfortably with a pair of thick socks. Would buying the size 46 be the wisest choice with the Tjakkes as well? Thank you and great video!

    • @The_gear_review_channel

Good to hear that. I got advice from Lundhags when it came to sizing. They have a size chart that you can fill out and email back to them for the best fit. I do wear 46 in other boots, runners and shoes. I have worn quite thick socks inside the Tjakke 46 and I have been comfortable. But I still recommended going to Lundhags customer support to get another opinion.

What is the furthest you have ever walked in the tjakke boots in one go? I know what you've said you tend to walk, but are these comfortable to hike that can last all day or for several days?
The lower half does that mould to the foot shape over time?
I've looked at all ads but lundwags none seem to show the boot being submerged over the lower black base 🤔can this model tjakke handle the English rain?

    • @The_gear_review_channel
      @The_gear_review_channel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They’re comfortable. I use the Skare everyday in the Nordics. Haven’t used the Tjakke for a good while now but they’ve been walked in for at least 500 miles. I’ve submerged them in water over the lower laces and been dry. Bear in mind that if walking in deep water the water will have a tendency to rise so depending on the depth, you might have to go for a higher model.

@@The_gear_review_channel thanks for your reply, I've come to the conclusion it's all about Calculated risk... I questioned this firm because any footage I saw the boots were NEVER above the black part in water and they do not list the boot like their others even water resistant.., but I know my boots The nordic people and the Swiss leave alot to your imagination about how their product can take all that's thrown at it the weather and elements and terrain BUT they don't live in the UK I don't know whether they see real Rain? they know snow and cold sub-zero temperatures they also will talk a four season boot but their summer is it as hot as here in UK? Or is it just warmer than their other seasons and will tan people even in winter cos of a clear sky with the sun? so a product maybe can't be worn comfy then in UK... Yet they target the English Market cos their marketing and product names of alot of companies are in English.... The Americans and UK are massive consumers. So anyway I chose these Swedish boots coś they are a small traditional firm the style is very simple and effective i don't want too much tech in my boots... These are very tough cos they are basic principle boots being hand made... I can manage the rest what comes with it... My short list was the hanwag tatra top and the lowa tibet gtx but they ressemble what I have already and if their leather can resist water to just Below the cuff then I don't see why these tjakke can't either, I just suspect they really need the greasing to do that... That's why I'm choosing them it's because they are basic..

You can also have a custom boot made to the shape of your foot. For me they seem true to size. If you want to layer up the socks inside the boot then you might want to consider going up half a size. But by doing so, the unlined boot will be a little looser in summer when it's a warm day and you want to wear a thinner pair of socks.
