Always keep your off cuts until the job is done folks. That way you have way more chance of matching the grain.

What you wanted to do was drill a blank hole and clamp it to the headstock.
It would provide a guide and prevent blowouts (on the top), and cut out half the extra work you made yourself unnecessarily. :)

Wood glue is stronger than wood, adequate clamping pressure and you are fine
