Just got done stripping my cabinets!! One thing i learned with chemical stripper was to cover it with plastic and let it sit for a few hours. It took off 3 layers easily. Great job with the heat gun!!

Me and my husband are watching this and because we'd have this arthritis issue, our suggestion would be to get a couple of sawhorses upon which you could put the cupboard doors. It's probably not that big a deal for you though. Really enjoy you. Thank you for being such a hardworking industrious young lady. You're kind of inspiring, Neiman too. . .

That’s what I did. I worked outside too. Didn’t use a heavy duty respirator, but a mask and safety glasses. I’m using Dumond Peel Away inside-I got the test kit so I ve been testing areas with their different products. I have a 1920 home and even tested for lead and it turned up negative. This was a bonafide test too! I watched how to do it and so I feel like I did it right. I’m still acting as if there’s lead in the paint. I do a little everyday but it’s intense because there’s tools, physical work, clean up. I’m only doing the areas where the paint is noticeably multi layered and cracking. If it looks nice (inside of cabinet doors) I’m leaving it alone. I go to bed many nights loaded with ibuprofen and toothaches in my arms! Ha!

LOVE the idea of keeping the doors off the centre cabinets. Recently, stayed in a hotel that had a large kitchenette with cabinets for their dishes that didn't have doors. It made it 100% easier to locate things.

A beautiful old fashioned kitchen. ( Just a quick tip from an old refinisher. An old hollow core door and two collapsable saw horses make a great portable work table and take up only a little storage space. Saves wear and tear on the body. )Good luck.

Labor of love for sure. Top cabinets without doors would enhance the charm and ensure easy access for those unfamiliar with contents. Do yourself a big, big favor. Enlist in a portable folding table/work bench to do these jobs. Your back and knees will graciously thank you later 🙂. You rock, young lady!

What a wonderfully informative vid. Our house was built in '59. We've been here nearly 40 years and I know how many coats/layers of paint I have applied. Time to take it off. Discussion so far has focused on sanding this well-made-of-solid-wood structure. Now I will approach the project with a heat gun and metal scraper. Thank you for this offering of information. I appreciate your "vintage" cabinetry and your hard work.

Patience, Perseverance, Persistency! 👍 👏. Well Done Lauren.
Everything looks like solid wood which is great.
I once used a heat gun (also used the gel stripper first) to get layers of paint off our front door. Despite being very careful, I burnt a hole in the carpet! Was able to cover it with a Welcome mat!
I also transformed our old kitchen by turning the doors Insideout because they were a similar Shaker style inside.

I am stripping cabinets that were chalk painted and am using Stripwell FQS. I wrap the cabinet and drawer fronts in plastic wrap and let it sit overnight. Using the Bahco carbide blade, it peels right off. I will try the heat gun for the cabinet frames. Looking forward to going on this journey with you. You are laying a good foundation for a strong financial future.

The heat gun us definitely the best way to go. I have never had a lot of success with the chemical stripper. Can't believe how many layers of paint there was on these cabinets. You've made great progress today with the stripping. Can't wait to see the finished kitchen cabinets. Thanks, Lauren, for helping me decide how I'm going to strip a chest of drawers I'll be redoing in the future.

  • @Lela-plants

My cabinets were painted multiple times and then whoever did them at some point put latex over oil or something and definitely didn’t wash or prime them because there were spots of what I can only assume were grease based on their locations starting to bleed through the paint. (Not to mention it would peel at the lightest bump).
Stripping it was a horrible experience lol. Mine looked like yours; they were originally stained oak from 1979 and painted into oblivion. I did paint the interior of the cabinets as they looked sooo dark once I painted the doors and cabinet frames. I allotted a long weekend but it took so much longer than I thought it would.
It was so worth it though. You will definitely love the results of your labor.

I am amazed how well that heat gun worked! It looked like it worked as well as that chemical stripper. One thought….have you thought about reversing the cabinet drawers since the inside drawers have less layers than the outside? The inside would be easy to sand down and you could use those as the front facing drawers. Great video and learning exercise!

When dealing with stripping, I always pre scuff everything with 60grit, or 80 grit, before applying the stripper. Doing so, allows the stripper to bite in deeper through multiple layers paint.

That was my thought as well- oil and lead. Though I wouldve said it was more of a 50s style color. She does make an excellent point though about the first layer adhereing better to the wood itself. wouldve soaked into the grain for more sticking power.

Sorry I'm coming to the party a little late, but wanted to tell you of a huge hack I learned several years ago if you ever want to salvage painted hardware. Get you an old crockpot from Goodwill, fill it with water and drop your hardware in. "Cook" on high, checking after 30 minutes (because I don't remember how long it took). Lol! Length of time will probably depend on how many layers of paint there is. You will be AMAZED at how easy the paint will peel off of those nasty hinges! It's really quite satisfying!

Many, many times when we’ve rented vacation houses, you end up opening and closing cabinets a hundred times trying to find things. Also…PLEASE leave the angled top of the cabinets, it’s absolutely charming ❤️ I am loving the reno of this place!

We have like 80 house projects going on and I feel your pain on these cabinets. We had to strip our front door which had a MILLION layers of paint with our intention of staining...no. At some point the previous owners caulked EVERY area they could on the nooks and crannies of the door detail and when we used gel stain over it, it looked ATROCIOUS. So my husband had to strip that as well and finally ended up painting the door black (which I love) but holy cow what a headache!!!!

Just a pity people could get poisoned by lead paint. You had to be very careful of fumes while painting, dust while sanding, kids also got poisoned from chewing on the top rail of cribs. Even the soil around old houses and vegetables could get contaminated and kids and pet poisoned playing in the soil, all because of dust and scrapped off paint. Beware when doing DIY on paint from the 1950’s or earlier. Use plastic drop sheets to collect dust. Seal used dropsheets and dust in bin bags, use respirators and fresh air, keep kids / pets away from work area. A lot of older painters didn’t realise the risk, don t get sick or die because of DIY

As long as you are wearing a mask and gloves which you should be stripping paint anyways and you're not eating or breathing in the lead paint it should be fine. The stripper will wet it down and the lead won't be in the air until sanding. . Paint stripper can burn the crap out of you if you get it on your skin and the fumes are pretty toxic. To each their own, I 'm sure I lost a few braincells stripping paint in the past lol.

Leaving the top cabinets open will make it easy for AIRBNB customers to see what is available but either way is great.

I was thinking the same once the top cabinet doors were taken off. The ceiling adds character to the open spaces with the slant.

As soon as the top cabinet doors came off I thought wow, you could have open shelving for the top cupboards. For an Air BNB you wouldn't need a ton of kitchen items and it would work well to have them totally accessible to the guests. At least the center cabinet area above the sink. It would take less work I would think. Just a thought. I hope you checked for lead paint on the older layers. You should use a respirator to protect your lungs from the fumes. The fumes from the heat gun is the most worrisome. The green is probably oil based and probably has lead in it. You should double triple check for this paint in other areas of the house.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with the chemical stripper and the heat gun. I think I'll look into investing in a heat gun... there are other applications I've seen for the heat gun (epoxy resin).
    Again, thanks for sharing

The green paint is either an old oil based paint where linseed oil was the major ingredient or it is lead based. If it is an old oil based paint then latex paint will not stick. At first the latex paint will seem like there is no issue and then it just fails.

Great demonstration Lauren. Thanks. You are really moving fast renovating your Air B&B. Well done. I saw Flipping Drawers use a specialised stripping machine for flat surfaces. Looks like a great investment.

    Wow, it’s gonna look awesome!
Back in the day, they painted the hinges to blend in with the wood. And I’m thinking that green probably was baked on. If so, huge difference on getting it off. You’re doing a great job ❤️.

      @mrcomment5544 ปีที่แล้ว

Lead paint is not nearly as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Sure, you don't want to be doing lines of sanded lead paint but some basic PPE and you are more than fine.

I would bet that green is led based paint. You need to get a test kit. They make a stripper for led based paint.
