I'm not sure, it's been over a year since I did the run. If I had to guess I would say that I probably made a different route where I didn't fight any enemies in sea shrine.
Doing a marathon currently starting at FF1... I just got the Key and ive never played 1 before... I am around 40min in so I guess I did okay... I wont finish the video as I am trying to figure the game out myself... I cant wait to see how many days it takes me compared to your sub 3hr run... lol
Do character names influence level-ups? "U can win a video games" described how in Dragon Warrior you get better stats with certain names. Wondering if FF does that too.
The names do not effect battle RNG in any way in the NA version. They do change some internal code on the Japanese version of the game... But nothing has been figured out with names on the NA version.
@@shanezell thank you Shane! You're a virtual FF encyclopedia! Always amazed at the facts you know about this game. I would never have thought to equip my fighter with an iron staff early on for crit damage. Amazing.
@@sr-oj9ev yeah the iron staff doesn't have great accuracy but the CRIT chance is high and the base damage is good... While also being cheap. It's kind of everything you want for a speedrun. The silver sword would be way at better if you have the time to farm one up, but that takes a while.
Sometimes I notice you walk a few steps outside of a town, and then it appears you reset the game and then hit "continue" immediately, appearing right back where you were. What is the purpose of that? Watching you go through the earth cave, I remember recently I was trying to get to where the vampire was and one of those red bats got in the way along that pathway before the vampire and it took like 10 minutes before it finally got out of the way. 🤣
So when I reset the game like that it is to skip the next fight. The game runs with x amount of steps until the next battle. Sometimes I force a fight then push the reset button to get the fight over with quickly. Bats will do that, I had that happen once in a Speedrun and it cost me 5 whole minutes.
@ShaneZell Wow that is cool that ypu know that. I wouldn't have even thought about it. So wait... if there are x number of steps until the next fight, how does resetting help? Doesn't resetting also reset the step count, or does it start it over from where it was when you reset? I guess it would have to be the latter, otherwise there would be no point in doing it, but still it's amazing you figured that out. It's also weird that the game works that way. @@brekedekdang39 so hitting reset after you get into the step with the battle the game thinks that you took the fight. So after resting you can keep on walking like you already had the fight. Now there is another category called single segment where you can't reset, and the game is much harder.
It's likely they toned down the bosses when they broke the magic. There is no way they didn't know that stuff wasn't working. Those bugs had to be in purpose
Why don't you want that second Black Wizard to live? What is the strategy of having him dead? Is it because of the extra experience points for the other three characters? Also, I never really thought about the order. I guess I just need to spend more time watching your videos!
The whole goal here is to rush through the game and I need to level up very fast. I want him dead so that the others can level faster. Party order is a big deal in final fantasy 1, and even more important on the NES. It affects the chance you are targeted in battle as well as your run chance.
@@brekedekdang39 I started off only watching people do runs. After a while I thought that I would give it a try. It took a while to actually become good at it. It is something that I do still because I enjoy it. It only takes a lot of time if you are trying to be the very best. Many speedrunners just do 1 or 2 runs with halfway decent times just because they love the game.
@@shanezellthanks for sharing. I don't know if I can resist doing things I like doing. I like to keep all four characters alive and I also don't like running from enemies. I would have to change up my strategy I suppose. Also, I might have to pee during the game. Well, I will think it over. 😁
I stream using an emulator, I don't have room or money for keeping up with CRT TVs, NESs, controllers, and the game itself. The rate that I play this game I would be replacing these things far too often.
@@jc.1191 The only emulator that I know of that actually works for FF1 is FCEUX. Just default settings. Most emulators don't work perfectly for Final Fantasy.
Frost Giants are only paired with the wolves...and you can not run from them. You can run from the wolves when you don't have giants with them. There are two encounters 1 FrGiant, 0-2 FrWolf and 2 FrGiant, 2-6 FrWolf...both are unrunnable. The two runnable battles are groups of 3-7 FrWolf and 4-7 FrWolf.
@@shanezell cool thanks for the response. I don’t know how I confused these two things but… I think you can run from Sorcerors but only if they are with MudGols. Totally different enemies, but I remember that mechanic because Sorcerers are one of the most broken, OP enemies.

Yes, I commonly use the menu in doorways to make glitched doors appear just for fun.

I think you can run from Frost Giants, but only if they're grouped with Frost Wolves.

@@benselander1482 You can run from all sorcerers, but not wizards. They are very deadly though and are avoided in speedruns.
