I think their plans and approach for Bregman changed a bit when Guerrero's friends made it public he would like to play in Boston. You sign Bregman, Devers was extended last year, and Still have Masa and Tristan it would make it difficult to make a move for Guerrero before someone is moved. This also leaves you little to no leverage when trying to trade someone as teams also see you don't have enough room for all of them. At this point I'm honestly ok if they don't sign Bregman. I think there are a lot of options to make a play somewhere else.

A lot of us think the Red Sox don't need Bregman, or even will be better off without him. But if that's even close to true, it puts Breslow in a better negotiating position. He doesn't have to offer any more years than for which Bregman will be useful to the team. In my book, that should be 3 or less.
Honestly, though, when I look at their current roster with an outfield of Duran, Rafaela, Yoshida, Refsnyder, and Abreu,
an infield of Casas, Grissom, Story, Devers, Gonzalez, and Hamilton,
    and catchers Wong and Narvaez,
I'm wondering where is the room for even one of the big three prospects, much less Bregman, too? Who do you option to AAA?
You'll want 13 position players active at any time, so this list above is a full roster.
Refsnyder is the only outfielder who hits lefties well, so you have to keep him. Plus he's the only one with no options.
Of the infielders, Gonzalez hits lefties the best, so you'll want to keep him, too. So to add Bregman and call up Kristian Campbell, you option Grissom and Hamilton to the minors. But they don't really belong there.
Now how do you bring up Anthony? Do you option Yoshida? Then you can't establish his trade value. And Duran, Rafaela, and Abreu all deserve to be starting.
Then what happens when Mayer is ready? Who do you kick off the roster for him?
Even without adding Bregman, you already have a roster crunch. Bregman just makes it worse.

I know right, what took them so long. Duran is the most intriguing player I have seen in a long time. He is a true baller but we will lose him because he wants more money that he truely deserves. I loved this guy from day one, he is by far the hardest worker in the league upon dealing with mental health. If they don’t go big with him after this year I’m gonna be pissed at the Red Sox. Duran is a beast and continues to get better each and every time he sets foot on the field.

If the Sox truly want to be a strong contender this year for the playoffs, sign both Bregman and Scott. I know you have said not to sign Bregman because he will block the younger players, but you get a known commodity with him and a leader. We know Cora and a bunch of the front office want him too. The only down side right now is that the Sox are waiting and over the past 3 or 4 years that just isn't going to get things done here, it also hurts them with signing any impactful FA. I think the Sox have told Bregman they want him, but at their price, and number of years, so now we wait. Also you must be excited that Duran signed today for this year and an option for next. 3.75 this year and 8 for next. At least that is one item down that we don't have to worry about now

This stuff definitely turns one into a nut jobber trying to figure it all out. If the Redsox are serious they can easily out do the Tigers . They just signed Gleyber Torres not long ago. Bregman is not going to want to play for the Bluejays. We all know the Bluejays have a beautiful stadium but they are not going to be winning any pennants any time soon. I am pretty sure that Vlady is on his way out the door in Toronto and Bregman knows this as well. I think the Redsox might be in the 3-4 year area. If I were Bregman I would rather play for Boston. Having Campbell and Grissom in our back pocket as insurance means we can wait this out. There's a lot of wheels turning with this. I would love to have Bregman but I would not overpay for him either. I would love to have Bergman on the Sox to play 2B, but for a short time. We have minor-league talent ready to explode on the scene. Bergman for three years and perhaps a team option is the limit of my offer. Otherwise, trade Casas for Guerrero and call it a day... Breslow is probably hesitant cause signing Bregman might be the only big contract he's allowed to sign outside of our own players. Like for two years this is the one of only 2 or 3 big contracts breslow is allowed to spend. Breslow might want to stay flexible and see where things go . If Bregman is financially reasonable and wants three years cool. Otherwise Sox are chilling , Sox can wait. BUT like you said Corbin Sox ARE the best fit so if Bregman is smart he will buckle and join the Sox under Redsox terms!! Bregman we def do want you! Go Redsox!

It makes sense for Bregman to sign with the Red Sox for a one year contract with a player option for 2026. Fenway could be good for Bregman. Doesn’t look like three years with fourth year option would be smart with Bregman. But going one or two years at Fenway could lead to ANOTHER lucrative contract after finishing the first. Player motivation is definitely questionable. Bregmans stats slipped on a contract year. Not the end of the world, but it comes up once a player is 30. I don’t think the RS are going to overspend on Bregman. They pretty much have determined his value and as long as its in that box, they’d be willing to deal. I don’t think Boras wants this to go into February. He’s been there and he knows teams start concentrating on the season and he loses control. I’d be surprised if a deal isn’t reached this coming week. It seems 50/50 whether Bregman signs with Boston. Boras will take the money and years. The question is whether Bregman will go where he thinks he has the highest chance to suceed and signs a contract that sets him up for another big contact in say, two years. If the Red Sox sign Bregman, I think the odds of trading Mayer or Campbell increase.

If you put Bregman at first then Casas has to go. If you put Bregman at 2nd then you block the young players. If you put him at third then Raffy has to dh. If you put him at dh then he could platoon with Yoshida but they're not gonna spend big bucks to do that. Do you want Bregman for his glove, his bat or both? Why not move Story to third, Raffaela short, whoever at 2nd and keep Casas. Next year Guerrero is a free agent and he probably won't mind dhing. I know we want to accelerate the process but maybe next year is more realistic to compete for a title. Get the pitching staff in order and 1 more off-season to set up this roster. Some of these young guys might have to be traded due to lack of space. Ideally moving off Story and Yoshida would create more salary space for better players but if they perform we will have a ton of depth.

Two economic variables govern the Bregman negotiations. The first is obvious. Bregman is almost 32 (I think) and is projected to play middle infield. This is his last opportunity to ink a major contract. Next year and years following, he loses negotiation power. The second factor is agents understand baseball economics and salaries are at a peak. Salaries will not increase appreciably over the next decade. So, its gotta be now for Bregman, he wont accept a 3 yr deal. If you look at Bogies ridiculous deal (11 yr), it is now apparent that Boston was wise to let him walk. Remember everyone was chastising the Redsox when they let him depart? What a laugh. Because they let him walk they are now in a position to chase bregman, who is likely to match or exceed what XB offers on the field and at the plate. Unless Bregman makes concessions on the salary figures, the correct deal is 3 yr with a player option for the fourth. Redsox should hold firm to it.

It could be the Red Sox gave a verbal offer to Bregman but only 3 years. Boras says no way. And the Red Sox are sitting come visit us if you change your mind. Why spend all the time and effort when a player says "No Way:" to a sort term deal. Which you said after I wrote this. It is a good way to negotiate.
I would rather the red sox sign another reliever than sign Bregman.
The Red Sox have 3 other options for 2nd : Hamilton, Grissom and Campbell. Each will give it more stability than last year. As a last resort the have Rafela. , , , And maybe Mayer in June.
I think the Red Sox plan is to put either Grissom or Campbell at 2nd. Let Mayer play 3rd in AAA. Trade Yosida and move Devers to DH and call up Mayers to play 3rd. They have 3 shortstops that are between 2 and 3 years away if Story can stay healthy.

From Houston: Here's how it goes with Bregman. He'll brag all offseason that his training is OFF THE CHARTS and he's about to have a HUGE YEAR so FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS.
Two months into the season, he's off to one of his usual "slow starts" batting .097 with 1 HR.
He'll slowly battle his way back to about .250 or .260 by the year's end with cheap homers over the Crawford boxes, finish around 20-25.
He's a pretty terrible athlete. He isn't strong. He struggles so hard to hit it to the warning track. He isn't fast on the bases. Weak arm, limited range but very sure-handed and confident in big spots defensively. He is a very smart player.
His approach to batting is to draw walks first. It's like he's afraid to hit the baseball. He gets into long, drawn-out ABs and eventually goes down looking, barking at the umpire. MLB games would be 10 minutes shorter without Bregman's crying after getting caught looking. The problem now is that no one fears his bat anymore so they just throw strikes and he doesn't know what to do. And with runners on base, go ahead and get a snack because he's not doing anything.
He's a slightly above average player with an inflated ego due to Houston fans cheering anything because we're so used to having losers in sports.
Altuve is the truth, Yordan is the truth. Clutch moments, they're unbelievable. But Bregman rode the coat tails.
He already turned down 6 years $150M from Houston after his 5 year $125M deal. 11 years at $275M wasn't enough for a 115'ish OPS+ guy in decline. He cannot take 3 years now because Boras would lose face. Bregman is another Boras victim!

We are not signing Bregman. We are going to sign Grichuk because this team is cheap beyond measure. We are not going to compete, but because our ownership is so cheap we can settle in with the cheapest players. Good luck. We won’t even sign the prospects we’re willing to ejaculate to.

It's hard to say like you are saying what's going on here the remaining tight-lipped about what's going on who knows with all these Sports writers what the truth is bregman might have said you want me to play second base because you're keeping Devers on 3rd and Casas is playing first so if you want me to play second base I'm not signing a deal with you unless you give me five or six years or a 7-year deal for maybe 180 million and the Red Sox probably said no way you know will give you 3 years with a fourth year of an option for x amount of dollars and bregman might have said no or the Red Sox may not even be interested in him at all all I'm trying to figure out is if the Red Sox do not sign bregman and they do not sign Arenado what does that leave us for an option for a right-handed bat or are the Red Sox just going to go with who they have on the team right now and not sign anybody and simply go with all the left-handed bats that they have and maybe wait to see if one of our prospects like Christian Campbell can't come up halfway through the season from AAA in maybe he can play or maybe they're waiting until the trade deadline to see who might be available and go after somebody at that point I'm just wondering what other options Craig Breslow has up his sleeve if you don't sign one of the two big name guys that are left there really isn't too many other options but I agree with you Corbin that this is a real head spinner and very confusing situation here because you hear so many different stories and so many different scenarios from all these different writers on their opinions on what they think is going to happen that the Red Sox are doing like you said the same thing happened last year with Jordan Montgomery and come to find out that he wasn't even interested in playing here at all anyway so maybe bregman doesn't even want to come here or the Red Sox are totally not even interested in him because they just don't want to spend that kind of money and don't want to give up that many years for a person who's 31 years old already I agree with them because you think about it obviously he's not going to be playing second base or third base for the Red Sox if he signed a six or seven year deal let's face it he's 31 he's never going to be giving you the production and the type of defense that he can offer today in 4-5 years from now when he's 35 or 36 years old he's going to end up having to DH and you already have a DH cuz you're going to have divers and let's face it Devers is a much better hitter than bregman so I don't know about this whole situation it is very confusing and it does make your head spin so I totally agree with you

As I’ve said before, the Bregman issue is about the past vs. the future. We’ve got a bunch of potential superstars coming up in the next couple of years. Adding him is interfering with their futures. Maybe one or more of them are going to be better than him. The Sox need to stay with the future plan.
