- Right after the pandemic, they were booming, but now it looks like the golden era of New York City food halls is coming to an end. FOX 5 NY’s Kendall Green takes a closer look at why so many of these places are now closing.

Food halls are closing because their prices are ludicrous with generally mediocre food quality. They also have none-existent customer service but still expect a 20% tip. People are not dumb and will instead go to a real restaurant for better cheaper food.
Food halls, and food trucks, have gotten so expensive that they no longer offer an alternative to renting out a building for those doing business.
I agree , if you travel to food halls aboard , the prices are cheap and food is decent. USA food halls charge $25 - $30. Just mad.
I looked up the reviews for the Gotham West market. They have consistent 4 and 5 stars on yelp and google with the occasional 1 star that you get for any brick and mortar restaurant. It's not the food quality, its the rising costs of NYC. I'm writing this comment because I'm getting tired of the narrative about poor food quality or rich greedy restaurant owners. You can only raise your prices but so much compared to your competitors and your food quality in a place like NYC has to appeal to as many people as possible. The market has been around for 11 years, you don't last that long on poor food quality. The prices are higher because of inflation and the rent and labor costs are extremely high. The prices of eggs, chicken, etc all doubled. I have a friend who runs a pizzeria in NYC and he mentioned a bag of flour used to cost $28 and now it cost him $52. His prices for a case of cheese used to be around $92 now its $127. Olive oil used to be around $72 now its $105. Pizza boxes used to cost him $92 a bundle now its $145. His share of property taxes that he pays to the landlord used to be $2k a year now its $11k. His shop sells out regularly with lines so it looks "successful" but he is barely making it work post-pandemic. The reality is that restaurants used to be able to spend $2.00 on a hamburger and charge $6.00 for it to cover their costs of rent and labor. Everyone can afford $6 right? But now that $2.00 hamburger costs $5.00 along with everything else going up. The restaurant owner now would have to charge $15.00. $15.00 for a hamburger seems crazy expensive to us, then we complain about food quality when its the exact same ingredients, same everything. Owners are aware of this so they try to charge $11.00 or $12.00 to make it easier on the customer but they are still losing money on that burger.
It’s not food halls. It’s expensive food halls in not popular locations. Chinese food halls in flushing or Brooklyn are just fine. No 20% tip either.
They are charging exorbitant prices, and they want tips on top of that. Craziness!
Don't blame covid...property tax, rent and food was cheaper back then.
It’s ok. You can say it. The Biden economy destroyed everything.
Covid is what propelled the property taxes, rent and food prices to increase at a faster rate than the money that is in our pockets.
10 years ago … you couldn’t even get a seat in that place - now …
Damn 🫥 inflation I think.
It’s getting too expensive. Even local takeout prices are through the roof.
Ivan Ramen used to be here. A single bowl of Ramen would be between $20 and $30 + tax & tips. So suddenly a quick weekday lunch turns into $40 or $50. Currently everyone is watching their money. You simply can’t justify spending that much. Better to pack a lunch from home or just running down to chipotle or something
Why would you even give them a tip!
@@user-ux8hg8bk3e They had a counter. SO they served you. In addiiton, this the US. It's pretty much the only way servers make money.
A package of ramen noodles costs less than a dollar. Add hot water and you have lunch. I can’t believe that people can be so lazy to spend money on simple restaurant food that they can make themselves.
@@AshishShrivastava-q6i I wouldn't consider that serving for a tip!
@@genevieve730 Respectfully, Real ramen isn't the dollar store stuff. It's an incredibly complex dish. And yes, it can be worth $50 for a bowl. But You can't justify spending that kind of money on a daily basis.
Hard working people do not have money to waste on expensive restaurant food. When rent is super high. It's time for yall to wake tf up😅
I like the food halls but they do charge wayyyy too much
not covid... $$$$ + average food at best.
Who goes to 11th Ave for lunch? Two ad agencies used to be based in that area, but they've relocated now. It’s probably affecting the economy of that food court
I avoid those places because they’re usually crazy overpriced. I’ll just keep learning to cook for myself for a fraction of the cost. Plus I learn a skill
TBH, the prices in these places are above average for quick service food
Meanwhile Chinese food halls are booming. 😅
just go to flushing.
They must have money
These places have roaches too😂😂😂😂@@lizardsun-y7w
@@Andrew-kd5oyit’s always been like that in flushing! 🛑
This. New World Mall food court is at capacity.
We ain't got money for expensive lunches. I'm eating more fast food than I'd like but it's a sign of the times
i got a $1 whopper yesterday
I live around there been there many times, honestly the reason I think most people stop going is it’s just that the food there is not that good
essex market downstairs closed too.
People can't afford to eat
I didn't even this place existed
People in NYC are very greedy, and the city should step in to stop this greed.
I would say a lot probably has to do with location. Not many people travel down that way of 11th Ave. Except tourist who are heading to thaat museum by the water.
If it was open really late at night. I could see it being a hit with all the clubs by the Westside highway. But who wants to deal with rowdy club goers, so I could understand why it's closes earlier in the daytime.
Building back better is spreading fast.
I think this is mostly manhattan because in Brooklyn it’s booming and those places are always packed
Oh no, This place is so cool. It's just down the street from me. I even made videos in there a few times. I'm going to hate to see it go
That what happens when you over price things
Eating out in nyc used to be fun. Now it's just not economical. High prices with higher fees. No thanks!
These people are greedy as the landlords with the rent. What is it with 2024 that everybody who opens a business wants to overcharge on everything. They must think everybody is rich!
How many times are you gonna comment on the same video? You hate them - we get it ffs.
@doomdude69 Why are you mad!
Wonder just opened a spot at midtown east.
I have lived next to the gotham market for years, the food sucks and its overpriced
I wonder how Chelsea market is doing.
Seems booming😊
@@Flatfourdetailing its also location. Like Chelsea market is doing well so is Urban Hawker.
I been to this Gotham market it’s all the way on the west side where there is nothing there but car dealerships.
Chelsea market is always jam packed especially on the weekend
That place sucks. It for non new Yorkers tourist and tech dorks
Aka rich people!
BATMAN AND COMMISSIONER GORDON ARE NOT GOING TO BE VERY HVPPY ABOUT THIS!!! WE SHALL SEE...😎🦇⚖🪃💥
😢😢😢😢😢😢
It sucks but COVID is the deciding factor, plus the rise of food costs and people not willing to pay so much as well!🤷
Covid was not the deciding factor. Greed was.
Greed is the deciding factor!
In Flay Shin
MANY will be leaving
Abruptly n we NY 🤘🙌's
Knows why
Without explaining either 💯
When you have youtube or the Internet, you don't need to go out to eat. You can learn to make it at home.. Who wants to spend the money ? Almost anything I want to eat, I could learn to make at home.. Worse case, buy a frozen version in the supermarket or even go to a supermarket all-ready made food.. Should I pay 40$ for KFC or $10 for 8 peice fried chicken at the supermarket.. Yeah, it's not as good, but for the price it's good enough !!#$!#
Damn not the food market
It's the economy stupid! Stick in there, Trump is back !!
Wow that's near Sky
guerilla kitchens takjng over as well
