  • Welcome to another experiment in Universe Sandbox 2, for science.
    Today we'll be seeing what would happen to Earth when Betelgeuse goes supernova in the future.
    Universe Sandbox 2 is a space sandbox with endless possibilities, and is an awesome game for people who wonder about pretty intense things happening in our universe. But, keep in mind the physics and results depicted in this game are to be taken with a grain a salt, the game tries to, but does not always accurately reproduce the expectations of our current knowledge of physics, and the game is still an early access alpha!
    A lot of the ideas in this series are suggestions by viewers and aren't intended to be "educational," so take the results of this test with a grain of salt!

    For people asking what software this is, it's "Universe Sandbox 2" and there's a link in the description. I've also made a newer video on the subject. th-cam.com/video/l7lxqUk3xlY/w-d-xo.html

      I'm not sure it's accurate to call it a "game" it's more of a physics simulation even if it's not a fully complete one.

    So, being as it's 640 LY away, isn't it more accurate to say "we're looking to see if an event that has already happened has reached us yet"? The neutrino burst is only a few hours ahead of the visible light, so sleep easy and it happens, it happens.

    Found this: "Betelgeuse lies some 430 light-years from Earth. (Note: determining distances, especially to red supergiant stars, is a vexing problem in Astronomy. Estimates vary and are often revised, with some as high as 650 light-years.)"

      Good to know, I found through a lot of resources the distance was ~640, so I went with that value in doubt of Space Engine's accuracy.

    This was really cool. Can you imagine an earth where the night sky is this lit up? For thousands of years there would be an additional light source backing the sun and boosting the night. Our entire ecosystem would change after a time. The differences would be enormous and if we harnessed ways to fully utilize solar by then (which barring some horrible event we surly will) then the additional energy would compound all mans resources for THOUSANDS OF YEARS! Such a wild concept to play with..

      The light from the explosion itself would only lasts about four months. As for the rest of the time, it's dying light would only reflect off of the debris and dust of the nebula it will create and would largely only be seen with a telescope.

      It's not unreasonable to interpret Einsteinian Relativity as saying that things don't happen until the shortest possible time that we could find out about it, i.e. the time it would take the neutrino pulse from the collapse to reach us. So, in our reference frame, it would be accurate to say that it hasn't happened yet, even as the effects might be zipping through space towards us as measured in some other star's reference frame.

      Right, plus they figured it's poles are 20 degrees away from Earth, so no gamma ray burst to be really concerned about.

  • @RodneyAllanPoe
    @RodneyAllanPoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 2 degree gamma ray burst will apparently miss Earth by 20 degrees. This is good.

  • @G274Me
    @G274Me 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also, what you're showing is the nebula that would form after the super nova. If there was a threat of a gamma ray burst, we would know as soon as we witnessed the explosion itself. Because gamma rays travel at the speed of light. The nebula is gas and dust traveling away at much lower speeds.

    Tons of inaccuracies in this "game" of space. When it goes supernova, it will shine brightly for a few days - possibly more brightness than a full moon, and then get dimmer over 3 to 5 months. For about 10 weeks or so, it will be visible (like a bright star) during daylight. The nebula (the part this silly game makes expand over time to look like it's swallowing the earth) does not reach us this way. Betelgeuse's rotation is about 20 degrees off the plane of the solar system's ecliptic, and when it explodes, any gamma radiation (which will come off its poles) will bypass the earth (and probably the solar system in general).
    But what is simulated in this "game" is not what actually happens.

    • @RetroOkamii
      @RetroOkamii  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I intend to make a video on this in the future, it's on my list, but yeah the supernovas in this game are basically just a couple illuminated particles that burn away planets for a moment then have an abrupt cut off of their destruction capabilities. Then it just expands and fades out for 100,000 years or so. I mentioned it in one of my more recent US2 videos.
      Keeping in mind that this game is still an early access alpha that is in development by a very small team, and has shown signs of very active development. In its current state, it does have short comings. This series is more about what happens in this game, not so much how it actually happens, hence why I list the videos under the gaming category.

    I think that the distance varies because its a star of significantly variable brightness and thus is more difficult to estimate the distance.

  • @flashpeter625
    @flashpeter625 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Distance to any star is very difficult to measure, but in this case, the variable and assymetric nature of Betelgeuse makes it even worse. Hence the large uncertainty. The wiki article actually says 643±146 ly. That's how clueless we are. I believe the numbers are a statistical combination of numerous measurements. 427 ly is almost deinitely wrong, but it doesn't really matter a whole lot if it is 500 or 700 light years.

    Sometimes I thought, when in some nights Beteigeuze (as we call him) is very red: It already did 'explode'.
    I will ask my Mother, if she will visit me again in my dreams She had to left me, and in her lifetime it was her conviction, that the 'interested ones' (we spoke about Carl Sagan that day) will visit after death the universe, and look at everything they wanted to know while being alive.
    I know, she is still on her trip. ANd she will enjoy it so much. I miss her awful, but I am happy she has so much fun now SHe will tell me, how Betelgeuze is today :)

    Even if a star were 2 light years away I wouldn’t worry unless it was a hyper giant capable of a gamma burst on nova.

    I saw the blast in a dream. A very bright star in heaven. A halo around it, expanding and shrinking and growing wider every time until it collapses. As it collapses finally a flash. In an instant all flesh is charbroiled on the surface of Earth. Trees untouched, homes of wood intact. Such a powerful blast of energy. Our bodies transformed in an instant, just at it was written. Amazing event.

    Something is wrong with that app. A nova nebula from 600 light years away wouldn’t engulf us ... nor would it fill the sky like that.

    If you place Jupiter in Earth's orbit and made Earth one of it's moons, can you get it to survive? How many moons could be terrestrial also?

      We don't, the possibility is there but it's extremely unlikely. It could have happened 641.999 years ago and we'll see it tomorrow or it might not happen for over a million years from now. There's no way to know when exactly it's going to happen.

    • @marcsultana3311
      @marcsultana3311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul, you'd know approximately somewhere between 642.5 years from when it went Supernova ;)

    I’d kill to be alive in a time when an astronomical event happens like this. I doubt it’d get nearly that big but it’ll still be a great light show

    Betelgeuse is a red super giant,which makes it a very large star, its in the top 10 largest stars that we know actually, so yes it is capable of turning into a black hole but it won't have on Universe Sandbox 2
