- I have been asked how I made my face stencil that I use occasionally in my art journals, so in today's video, I show you how. Alternatively, if you would like to buy a face stencil (or two!), I sell machine cut stencils, individually cut by myself from my own drawings in my Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/u...

Great video. Well done. Very helpful with shadows, contrasts, black and white 2x photocopies. What great ideas to turn tricky photos into stencils.
Stencil storage: 3 ring binders w/ plastic sleeve inserts
Also manilla/orange envelopes with wing tab? for closure
Save 9x12 junk mail envelopes for storage
Thanks so much, your storage hints are great, my stencil drawer is a mess! 💗💗
Your instructions are very easy to follow. That stencil turned out so well. You're so good in picking out the shadow parts from the rest of the image. Well done! X
Thanks Zhianne, I am glad it turned out OK, I decided to keep it simple and just do the analogue technique, rather than the digital one. (I recorded this at 3am as I had bad insomnia - I hope I don't sound too loopy! 😂
@@KariGibsonArt gosh that was late. I'm sorry you're not sleeping well. You sound just the usual you so nothing to worry about.
Never would have thought of using soldering iron! Really great tutorial, appreciate your instruction, demonstration and especially considering varied methods for the wide diversity of human experiences!
Thanks so much! Have fun making your own stencils! 🥰
Thank you I’m slow and I couldn’t wrap my head around how it was done. I have a soldering tool because used it on plastic soda bottles to make windchimes and jewelry. Thank you for the simple explanation. Well done.
You are welcome!
I’ve just started keeping my larger stencils in a pretty accordion file (the kind with several slots- for bills/receipts etc.)
I made a pouch from a mail order catalog and a tshirt (Paper Outpost tutorial) and that fits inside the accordion folder for the smaller stencils.
So far so good 👍🏼 keeps them flat and safe from loads of other junque.
That's a great idea, thanks for the tip! 💗😁💗
She’s lovely and now I have a much better idea of what images will work best for a stencil. I’ll have to incorporate one into a future Kari’s Prompt. Thank you!
Thanks Kate, I hope you do make one of your own, it is really quite easy, but even easier once you have done one or two and you get a feel for it. X❤️X
I love using stenicils but have never made my own. Fascinating video, makes me want to have a go! The way I store my stencils is between a carefully removed pair of pages from an old book. Each stencil has its own individual 'page folder' as this enables me to stencil on the front page , so that I can quickly see what design lurks within. The book pages stop the stencils getting entangled with one another. It is fun and quick to flip through my stencil stash this way.
This was a great tutorial! I wouldn't have known where to start when it comes to using a photo as a reference for stencil making! Thanks so much for sharing and have a wonderful weekend, Erika
Thanks so much, Erika, I hope it encourages everyone to give it a go! Have a lovely weekend too!X
WOW 😯 WOW 😯 WOW 😯 Kari that’s really really stunning and gorgeous too, and it’s fantastic on the collage paper. Thank you so much Kari I really really enjoyed watching you make this stencil. What an awesome idea 💡... I know that you can buy soldering irons very cheaply too. So B&Q here I come!!!! Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thanks Mags, I think I got mine from Lidl or Aldi, they are great at selling that sort of stuff at very reasonable prices. It is much easier to use than a knife, which always hurts my hands. I hope you are staying safe and well too, Mags, are you any nearer to getting your vaccine? ❤️❤️
Great video Kari. Thank for sharing.
Thank you very much, I am glad you like it! ❤️
Each of your steps was so clearly explained that I'm encouraged to try it myself. I can see that getting the tracing step right takes practice but I'll approach it like doodling until I get something I like. I'd enjoy seeing other face stencils you've made in the future. Great lesson!
Thanks Robin, that is a great idea to experiment first, it takes a bit of practice, but you will get there! ❤️
You did a fantastic job at it Kari! Personally I use a lot of face stencils, for me they are a quick entry point into a focal image and I love that, especially for 3/4 turn faces which are trickier for me to make.
Thanks Yana, you use them so well! I like how using a stencil speeds up the creative process and I shall make more to give me some variety. 💕
Thank you! So well explained & informative. So happy I found this. 😊
I have seen a couple of artist use J hooks and a spring rod. Caroline Dube shows this method in her latest studio tour. I am going to do this as soon as I make room in my dtudio
Ooh, that's sounds interesting, I shall have a look, thank you! 🥰
Fantastic tutorial. Really useful and love it. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Thank you, I am glad you found it useful!
Thank you Kari!!! This tutorial has definitely encouraged me to make my own stencils!😃
Nice work on the stencil cutting, it takes a very steady hand, and for that matter eye! turned out amazing!
Thanks Becca, I had to use the extra strong glasses! ❤️
@@KariGibsonArt they worked!
What a smart idea, Kari! I must try this. I hope you're well. 💛
Thank you so much, Ulrika, I am OK now, January was a tough month with the long dark days and the whole virus situation. I hope you are well too! ❤️❤️
@@KariGibsonArt I'm glad you're ok. 😊 January can be long and tedious, yes. Longing for spring. I'm alright too. 😍
Wow, would never have thought to do anything like this, well done, your face is awesome. Tfs xo
Thanks so much, Elizabeth, it is quite effective and simple to do! x😊x
That was interesting Kari, I don't cut my own now I tend to buy them but I used to years ago, with a knife. I can imagine your hands must be aching mine definitely would!! 😕 I store my small stencils in a small basket and stand them up right so I can just flick through them to find the one I want... The big ones I have I keep in a box the 12 x 12" ones came in. I don't have loads but I enjoy using them in the journals I make and my own, along with my Gelli printing 💖💖🌷 Lovely job on the face xx
Thanks Elaine that sounds lovely and organised, I like the idea of the box for the smaller ones, thanks! ❤🥰
@@KariGibsonArt you're welcome... I have baskets for all sorts of stuff... Only trouble is - - no lids so they can get dusty if not used for a while but I can't see that happening for your stencils 😁😁🌷💖
Excellent video Kari. Great idea by the way ;)
Thanks Lee! 😊
perfect video thank you so much you explained everything very well !!
Thanks Anne, I am so glad it was helpful! 💗
Absolutely wonderful, Kari - thank you SO much for sharing with us. Jen ❤️❤️
You are so welcome Jen, thanks for watching! ❤️
You make everything look so easy!! She’s beautiful Kari!!
Thanks Lisa, it isn't hard and I like to show how we can make our own supplies! ❤
Oh wow, this is really interesting, Kari 😍 I will try something similar with a pic and my cutting machine. I love how you've been tracing the shapes, it's not easy at all to make a stencil that way but the result is awesome! Congratulations! ✨
Thanks Ana, oh, I wish I had a cutting machine too!
@@KariGibsonArt I bought it on sale and it's the little one, otherwise it is soo expensive! 😅
Nice .
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much, Patricia! :)
Amazing Kari! Oooo I love her! Eat your heart out Jane and Dina! HA!!,
LOL, thanks Marti! 😂
Thanks for this video Kari! I often wondered how you make your stencils! I must say though the face with the blacked out bit was fabulous! Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome, Cheryl, I am so glad you like it and thank you very much for watching the video! ❤️
That is so cool Kari 😍😍
Thanks She! 😀❤
Wow that's brilliant Kari! I am well impressed👍🙂 xx
Thanks so much, Toni! ❤️ 😊❤️
Wowowow great project
Thank you Genevieve, I now don't use the hot iron to cut the stencils, although the design part is still the same. I now have a Cricut machine which is a lot easier and I can now share the designs in my Etsy shop. ❤️😊❤️
Impressive and well executed thanks
Thank you too! ❤️
Wow Kari you did an awesome job, I just love this stencil, you are a great teacher? I may have to try this down the road, thanks 💕
That is so kind of you to say, Patti, thank you! I hope you do give it a go! 💕
Really nice and thanks for sharing.
You are welcome - and thanks for watching! 💗💗
Well done! We are working on some new stencils and I am learning how to use the cameo 4. There is a learning curve from the cricut... the burning tool is looking good at this point 😊
LOL, sometimes the old methods are quicker. Mind you, once you get over the hump of that curve, you will be saving tons of time! and producing some amazing stencils!
@@KariGibsonArt P used a hole punch to save one of the first runs on the thicker yupo... I really how that turned out.
Really cool, thank you!
Glad you liked it! 💗💗
Really good tutorial and very effective. Love the face - will have to have a go! I store my stencils in a project folder that has the plastic sleeves in it. The bigger ones are in a box with my various papers. Not sure it’s the best method but it works for me. Only problem is they’re across the room not immediately to hand!
Thanks Leanne, I am glad it was OK, your stencil storage sounds good, my smaller ones are nearby, but my larger ones are not to hand either, but I tend to use those on larger paintings anyway. I hope you give the face a go, they would be good for gelli printing!
That is so awesome!
Thanks Lori! 😀
This was fascinating Kari, thank you for showing this I haven’t got a soldering iron so Im thinking I would just have to cut it with my craft knife !
Thanks Carol, oh yes, of course, the knife will be fine - probably neater, too! ❤️
This is really amazing! I would love to try this 🙂
Thanks, yes give it a go!
That was really interesting......I might just give it a go.....although I have a Cricut so the cutting would be easy then :)
Thanks Stacie - I have Cricut envy! 🤣
Prior to the book page storage solution (comment below), I used to use an accordion folder - but found it a bit inaccessible, taking ages to find things, stencils getting tangled. When I am creating something and need inspiration quick - flipping through the stenciled book pages works well for me.
Thanks Josie, your book storage system is rather similar to what I use nowadays. I use old catalogues/trade magazines from work, especially those that have the thicker paper. Mind you, I still get in a muddle with them! 😂💗
@@KariGibsonArt 😂 Yes, I know how it is - so I have to stencil a picture on the page of each one. I also use a lot of Weston Boxes a4 size (they do larger as well). The Weston boxes stack really well and have helped reduce the number of avalanches in my craft room! I label them with paper tape - that helps me find stuff as I always forget where things are! The boxes also help me to make maximum use of my limited space.
Thank you so much Kari. I love your channel. Could I buy the plastic on Amazon? If so could you send me a link? I don't have any packaging material. Thank you!
Thanks Sandee! I use OHP transparencies like these: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079GLZ838/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_42HN7371X96AZ97W4RFX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
