      I’ve had a snail outbreak before and there’s signs of snails emerging in a newer tank. So far I’ve been pipetting snail eggs I see into a used jam jar and pouring boiling water over them to kill them. I’ve also been trying to bait Amano shrimp to start eating the eggs with the boiled ones, but no luck so far. If I start seeing more snails I’ll drop a cucumber and boil the snails alive.

    My assassin snails, pea puffers, and zebra loaches all love them 😉
    On another note, I made a snail trap out of a clear plastic food cup with various sized holes with a food wafer inside. As long as it is pulled with max capacity, it's great!

    I've made a snail catcher before, and if I had a way to post a picture here describing my design, I would.
    When I had a larger fish room and wanted to harvest snails for my puffers, I made my own catcher. I haven't seen this done anywhere, so I decided to share with everyone. What you need is some egg crate, 1 inch diameter clear PVC (or any tube really), aquarium safe super glue, and 1 cap for the tubing. Cut up several pieces (I do at least 6) of egg crate that can fit snugly in the tube. Using as little glue as possible, attach the pieces together, rotating the alignment slightly each time, so that when you look down the pieces you can't see through to the other side. Once the glue dries (this is important so that the fitting does not permanently seal itself to the tubing), put the fitting into the tube. You have a cheap, and efficient snail catcher now! All you need to do is put some food in, and put the catcher in the tank.
    The reason I rotate the pieces of egg crate is because I have found that fry, small fish, and shrimp are not comfortable navigating through the 'spiral' created by the egg crate, and so only the snails get caught. Only once I got some CPD fry stuck in the trap, but that was because I had forgotten to put the egg crate in, and decided to do it underwater.

    I was warned about a snail infestation when I had purchased some plants from my local pet store, gratefully I only found one... but I honestly love snails, so I stuck him in with my betta and they’re good friends so far, but I don’t need an infestation, I’ll stick with my nerite and mystery snails, love them!

    For my nano planted aquariums I use assassin snails, for my larger tanks (that don't have shrimp) I use yoyo loaches. For my larger shrimp tanks, I MAY use assassin snails... but I mostly make what I call 'parashoot' traps. They are bottle caps or larger lids with three pieces of fishing line hooked to them. I put treats (like sinking algae wafers) in the middle, and they attach to a ping pong ball that floats at the top. I let it sit on the bottom till there are enough snails, then I lift it up, and put them in my tanks with the loaches because they do so a good job... they get hungry!

    I see some promote Ramshorn snails as part of the natural aquarium ecosystem. Wrong. They will and do eat ornamental plants and I suspect them of eating the roots of epiphytic plants like Anubias and Bolbitis.
    Gravel snails are alright. But,Ramshorn and Mystery snails?..not if you want plants to look good.

    Hi Michael! Thank you fo giving info about this snail trap. I hand pick my trumpets out of te tank daily. I have a population explosion, as well. I toss them into the trash because i don't know anyone who has puffer fish or another type of fish which would eat them. I even advertised here in the Bay Area.. In any case, do you think it's ok to dispose of them into my kitchen trash (I use plastic garbage bags). I was feeling concerned because they are an invasive species. Thank you if you see this and can respond. Have a great day too.

    I just bought this trap & think it is a lousy design. The plastic spacer sticks keep falling out. When I put it in the tank the spacer sticks came out & floated to the top. I will be returning it to the shop!

      Huh, I just bought one and literally had to use every spacer stick to keep my fish out. They worked fine however, my smaller fish can still get in (idk how in the F they managed that) and my bigger snails can’t fit through. Fml

      @@AntAciieedno he’s right. Just tried last night, I used all the plastic things to keep my small fish out, they still got in (idk how) but then they were trapped, and as they have to go to the surface for air I can’t even leave the snail catcher in there without risking losing my smaller fish
      Edit: and by using all the plastic things to keep fish out, I literally used every hole with the plastic sticks, so much so that the bigger snails can’t fit through, but somehow my small fish can….fml

  • @ratsaremagic
    @ratsaremagic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now that is rubbish and you still make a video of it! Nobody has time to 'fish out' snails every day. Everybody wants their voices heard on videos but nobody has a damn concrete scientific answer!!

    • @Winddancer1991
      @Winddancer1991 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😂 the contraption is supposed to be left in there for as long as the food bait remains, however it is such a bad design that you have to fish it out every other hour or so to let your fish trapped inside out so they can breathe at the surface. I just bought one, waste of money. Literally put the thing in and 15 minutes later 8 of my fish were trapped inside. I maxed out the plastic spacers to keep fish out, and now my smallest fishes can still get in and the bigger snails can’t. DUMB
