I think in this situation the best thing to do is realize that these are wild animals. We can do everything for the fish but there is still the fact that these are wild animals and they do wild animal things. Sorry for the loss Joey and I hope this helps in your grief
Idk, keeping wild animals in relatively small enclosures probably doesn't help
Being that his rays were captive bread by definition they're not "wild animals" their just animals 😂 but yes animals do what animals do
They are wild captive breed yes, but not domesticated@@DeshawnHamilton-f4h
@@DeshawnHamilton-f4hthey're still wild and not domesticated animals. With all the instincts of their wild counterparts.
It's so cruel. You take something from its ecosystem and put it in a cage. You have no idea what you're doing honestly because they are wild animals. You don't know how their territorial behaviors translate in captivity. Humans can't leave anything alone. And then stuff like this happens. It's wrong.
A friend of mine who kept stingrays as well had a similar issue. A big pregnant female in a 24000 liter indoor pond (inside 250 square meter indoor "terrarium") killed 4 other stingrays in a 2 hour timeframe early in the morning. Water quality was good, food consistent, no temperature fluctuations, nothing special, just like what happened here. He had a camera inside the water for 24/7 monitoring and it started at the time that a male was breeding with a female. This was also the male who bred with her. To us when seeing it it was shocking, it was like if she was jealous or something. My friend at the time thought it could have been to protect strong DNA in their environment. Later this female had 2 pups in the same thank who are now growing like crazy.
Thanks for sharing this video, it's not easy to film and share these things when you care for these fish such a long time.
wow, that's something. a lot of people think fish don't have emotions but they definitely do.
I also thought sounds like a jealous situation but they're stingrays ... it's really interesting. Sad but interesting
@@shayl582 I don't know if its emotions or instincts, but it sure was strange to see her "snap" in her brain at the moment the male was breeding another female.
It’s probably what you state: the large female wanted to ensure propagation of her offspring without competition. Slightly similar to how male lions kill cubs of other lions…
@@jasonross5358 when you put it this way it makes far more sense. thanks
sorry for your loss joey :( Remember 1 thing, You have 1.64M subscribers. you have touched each and every one of us. for alot of us, we too have watched the rays grow for YEARS, we are attached to your livestock in ways you may not imagine. This one hurts. But youve inspired hundreds of thousands of people to get into the hobby, youve inspired many of us to build our own fish tanks, and even create unique solutions for filtration. Like you said, You know what youre doing, sometimes you cant stop what happens in the middle of the night, it was out of your control. Just remember that you have a 1.6M people standing behind you and wishing you the best.
Sending love your way brother. keep your head up. (now there is room for some new additions !) (hopefully not too soon....)
Damn, it's already been 8 years? Feels like you just got them a few years ago. Sorry for your loss man. Nothing else but to keep moving forward.
That the Covid time mess in with yah
oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that it must be heartbreaking with all the history you've gone through with the black diamonds.
Nice to see Joeys passion and learning from these troubles. I think it’s time Joey sets up some cameras… so much happens after dark. And especially when Joey travels.
Not all aquarium TH-camrs would share this honesty I don’t think there was anything that could have been done to prevent or predict this respect for sharing all love Joey
i am glad you never hide things from us that happen with your fish . Shows me that it is something that is right to show when you have a channel like yours .
Thanks for sharing man. I lost all three of my rays in one night a month ago because something went haywire and I was just feeling like a failure. This in some ways helps me come to grips with sometimes things happen. Sorry for your loss
Id talk to Kevin at preditory fins and see what he thinks
Everything happens, everything changes it's not the result that matters it's journey and what comes next, look forward to it. Go give Tamara a hug.
Ah f*ck.
I remember you losing the first BD rays due to the heater failure.
That was truly heartbreaking.
Sorry for your loss. The journey you've had with them was incredible. I'm so happy I was able to join you in the experience. Thank you for sharing.
You said you think she's pregnant. What are the chances that she got jealous of the male breeding with the other female and just snapped. Keeping fish for about 10 years I have noticed that fish can be very personable. Maybe she didn't want to share. But none the less, it's not your fault Joey. Thanks for sharing.
The worst part of animal keeping is when unpredictability results in injury and death. Happens to us all and there isn’t much we can do, best of luck king
So sorry for your loss. I know you loved them so much.
Joey, I've been a dedicated follower of your channel for a decade now, ever since I pursued my master's degree at Norway's sole seafood university. What's happening isn't within your control; it's simply the untamed unpredictability of nature. Keep up your incredible work; you're the epitome of an aquarium enthusiast ambassador. We're all behind you, unwavering in our support, because we recognize your unmatched expertise and your admirable humanity.
So very sorry for your loss my friend. Don't loose hope. We all still need you
It just reminds me of Buddy.. I feel your loss, not meaning it was a comparable situation but you had the rays for years...
Fr, hard to believe it’s been 8 years
Joey thank you for always being who you are. We all realize after many years of enjoying your videos and your journey you shared with us how much you have love for the creatures that you choose to be caretaker of. I agree with the other post I’ve seen their wild animals and you’ve done everything you can. Your self reflection continues to show A massive amount of humility and love for the aquarium hobby not just the creatures that you’ve lost today but overall. Thank you thank you thank you. I know this is painful for you but I hope you find some comfort and reflection that you did everything you could to give them the best life they had. Be well be you
You’re a great Fishkeeper brother. You’ve done miraculous things for the hobby and inspired EVERY SINGLE CREATOR in some way shape or form on TH-cam today.
I want to say great video, but I can’t. Instead I’ll say I remember getting the devastating text message this morning or whenever it was that this bdisaster happened… and it’s NOT YOUR FAULT.
Hang in there bro.
Hey Joey, my condolences on the loss of your Stingrays. It is definitely devastating that the big female went on such a rampage. I wish you much better results, going forward, with your Rays. Sorry about the news but you didn't do anything wrong. I know you will do right by them. Do keep us updated on them. Thanks for sharing this video, though it was not the content we thought we would receive.
Sorry for your loss my brother Joey. Your track record on raising fish is flawless these things happen it’s not your fault
Joey....man that really sucks. I remember when you got those rays. They were the replacements for the ones that died because of the heater malfunction the year, maybe 2 before.
It might be better to limit the chances in the future by housing any rays as a couple and not have another female with a female and male. Atleast then if this kind of thing did happen, you wouldnt lose 2.
What's the possibility that the move to the 2000 itself may have triggered the attack?
Man, I’m so sorry to hear this. I remember you unboxing them and just the excitement you had! What a tragedy. So sorry.
I am sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how devastating it is to have had them for so long and lose them.
So sorry for your loss! Losing any animal for any reason is just the worst.
Joey, keep your head up brother!. Everything’s going to be okay. You have a lot going for you and your fish gallery. Don’t let something like this ruin it. Stay strong!
Losing any fish is hard man. I lost a simple goldfish I had for 10 years. Still hurt
Rip 🪦 to your sting rays, they were beautiful for 8 years. It’s heartbreaking 💔 to lose a pet after so many years. My German Shepherd only lived 7 years. However, I hope you find peace in knowing that you did your due diligence.
Very sorry for your loss, Joey. All in all they ARE animals, no matter how much we tell ourselves otherwise.
Maybe u could of kept the males females in separate tanks If they get aggressive
Sorry for your loss. Everyone can see how well looked after your fish are and fair play for putting this video out, ignore anyone who comments negatively
Joey you’re one of the best on TH-cam… you show us the good, the bad, the real and the boring parts of the hobby.
I just found you today. I never watched an aquarium videos before today. This was my third of yours. I am so very sorry for your loss. I am still interested in this hobby… because of you. Thank you for posting tough moments with humility and honesty. I will be more mindful because of you. Blessings to you. ❤
I have just finished your video… I am sure you have friends… reach out if you need one more. Also, Jane Goodall knew chimpanzees better than anyone. Yet, she was stunned the day two clans went to war. They had never done anything like that before. She did not have a clue. If you had asked her about it the week or even the day before, she could not have thought her chimpanzees would likely do that. Afterwards, she knew she would need a lot of time to have more answers to the questions her experience had created. Years perhaps, in fact. Whatever you choose to do… I have a lot of respect for that. I am glad men like you are putting content like you put up on TH-cam. Again thanks.
Sorry for your loss bud. You work with life, you work with death.
Omg wow so sorry to hear this Joey I know you loved those rays and the rays were a favourite of mine two I remember the day you first introduced them to us all again am really sorry for your loss 😢😢
You have my condolences. It must really be heartbreaking to have cared for those fish for so long and to lose them so abruptly.
So sorry to hear the loss Joey, sometimes somethings are just out of our hands even though we try our best to be as careful as we can to not make any mistakes.
oh man that sucks joey sorry for your loss brother i know you love black diamond stingrays 8yrs is a long time
Sorry for your loss with the rays.
I feel ya I watch them from the beginning hard to see them end like that
They are wild animals at heart, there is nothing you did wrong. This sort of thing happens all the time in the wild. Don’t beat yourself up. Thank you for the honesty and always bringing us along thru everything. Keep up the amazing work you do and all the education you provide.
No other word for it, that just plain sucks, especially having them for 8 years, sorry for the loss
That’s incredibly heartbreaking. You’ve had those rays for so long. 😢
The quick scooping, of just reflexively doing so while in shock, I've done that before with my birds. Its like you just go numb and act to try and get it done before emotion comes back
Hey Joey, Sorry for your loss. Hope you can move on from this. Stay strong! RIP Ray's!
They're acting like they all witnessed a murder and are too afraid to snitch.
Rest in peace to the deceased people... people need to stay away from dangerous animals
Me&wifey lost different fish in our 37 years being together&we love all of our other animals to but we have to keep on going after our emotional times God bless you.
I am so sorry Joe. I can’t imagine how hard this video was.
The video he got the rays is called "I FINALLY GOT THEM!!!!" if you want to watch it, I went back to see how snall they were when he got them. Interesting how they were about the same size and then that one got so much bigger.
That’s brutal Joey. My condolences to you. Stay strong and just get through this. Take your time
Sorry big Joey! I know how much u love those rays and they are part of ur family! 🫶👊😥
Oh joey I’m so sorry for your loss, that sucks but please don’t beat yourself up. I remember when you bought those 3 , 8years ago. You are one of the best fish keepers in the hobby and I love your transparency and honesty. Sadly as you know, sudden deaths happen. I don’t think anything you did exacerbated what ever had been brewing. Hormones change everything as any parent knows xxx
Protecting her spawn, removing competition
I had sudden aggression in a tank recently. There were 2 female severums, a black ghost knife, and a raphael cat. The smaller of the severums had a sudden growth spurt. As soon as she got bigger than everyone, she decided to try to kill everyone. The other severum had almost all her fins bitten off. The catfish got its whiskers bitten off and one eye eaten. And the ghost knife was killed. They all grew up together for almost five years. She just suddenly decided to try to kill everyone.
Get some security cameras so you can go back and see what happens for future problems. Wild animals fight to the death for a lot of reasons.
I thought he already had cameras set up for that tank. When one of the Asian arowanas jumped out he had footage that showed what happened, although Joey is changing things around and could have deactivated them because of it...
I’m sorry 😢
Been watching you for years! I love your content and it’s kept the aquarium hobbyist alive in me. Thank you for always sharing ♥️
Maybe they killed each other fighting to mate. She doesn’t look beat up
Oh no!! So sorry for your loss 😞 Please keep her! You have had her for so long it would probably be hard to part with her. And, no one will care for her the way you do.
I lost a fish I cared about a week back too....as much as condition ourselves to remain a little more distant from our fish than say a cat or dog, its just not possible for me. I'm still pretty gutted a week later. I feel for you...hang in there mate.
Thats pretty sad, few weeks ago i lost few L046s and i was devastated. Cant image how you feeling right now losing your babies
Sorry for your loss Joey
Try installing some cctvs for the future ... might help
You need to consider setting up cameras in your tank rooms so you know what happens in these situations!
I'm sorry for your troubles... I have watched you for years... You have matured beautifully..
CHEERS...
If anything, Stingray biology could probably breed that mama
I normally have anywhere between 40 and 60 rays and I rarely keep the males with females, as you said the aggression is surreal, they just don’t quit.
Having kept fish for quite some time, I agree with what you think. If it was anything other than aggression then a lot more fish would have been killed and maybe even the entire setup wiped. And with your experience with Stingrays, it's very safe to assume that the female killed the other two during a breeding ritual
You couldn't have predicted the attack. I'm so sorry about your sting rays. So sorry for your loss.
He said they were showing signs of aggression he knew this could happen he just wanted the content he knows this type of trash content gets views
Sorry for your loss. That's really is a huge bummer.
Condolences.
Stingray biology seems to do research on rays.
you might want video recorders/cams on your main display tanks?
I've got 6 pups to say this even hurt me to watch is a understatement... can be the best in the world at what you do and still take a loss definitely a scary thought
As others have said it is one of those things happen kinda thing. Doesn't make it easier to take. Honestly realizing that we have less control than we think makes it more difficult. Wish you best luck.
It's clear that you're hurt by the loss of your rays. Just remember if they were in the ocean this still would've happened. They tried to breed her, she was having none of it and she was much more capable of defending herself. "Nature is metal" as they say.
Damn dude I remember when you got those!! Like you said nothing too be embarrassed about …tough part about this hobby…keep grinding!! Your doing amazing things
I remember hearing, somewhere, a story of a bamboo shark raised from a pup that one day, after growing fairly large, suddenly turned aggressive and killed other animals in the tank. It was like a light switch went off after no prior issues. That may just be a risk with these kinds of animals. In the wild there's almost unlimited room for running away, but if they always got away the males would never be able to mate the females, so clearly no tank size or design is a guarantee of eliminating this sort of thing.
All I know is you are doing your best, joey, I know you're sad, but it's just part of life.
So sorry for the loss. That's devastating. If she's pregnant, wonder if it's natural for her to kill off the males to protect her unborn pups....that or they just got too rough with her and she took them out.
I'm so sorry about your rays. As a fellow fish keeper I know how much it hurts your heart to lose one of your babies...
I think your female is about to have her pup soon in the mail and female shenanigans triggered something like a defense mechanism in them just don’t let it get u down and remember how little they were crazy socks, but no one could call this
sorry for your loss joey.
im so sorry ...
ive been watching you since before the gallery ... ive grown up side by side with these fish and .... it feels like I lost one of my own.
its unfortunate that this happen, but life happens sometimes. I appreciate you sharing this.
just remember, this isn't your fault. Your a wonderful fish keeper, and im certain they had an amazing life.
Hope you feel better, our hearts are with you ❤
Sorry for your loss of your rays. Keep your chin up and keep moving forward 👊💪
This makes me feel sick. It's something hobbyists have to deal with. So sorry for your loss.
so sorry for your loss ! that's the hard part in fish keeping we keep looking for what we did wrong.
Man I’m sorry for your loss. I remember when you got them.
That is a real shock for everyone especially you. When the favourite fish dies it is the time that you want to close every tank. It happened to me also. So I know your feelings right now.😔🙏😔
Maybe big mama just needs her own community tank now. Obviously she can't remain in the big pond, but maybe when you swap the babies in there, put her in the tank the babies are currently in. I'd say the pirahna tank but I have no idea how they would interact, but i also realize she needs a bit more space than some of the other tanks you have available and set up currently would give her. But short of rehoming her with a friend or back to a fish shop to be a display ray to be a demonstration on how big they can get; giving her, her own tank with other fish she obviously can get along with is probably the only option due to the babies all needing to go into the big pond.
Sorry to hear. This is one of those unexpected things that can happen in this hobby. About 10 years ago, lost an entire tank when the heater broke and wouldn't turn off. Hugs.
Joey, so sorry, 8 years man, people it's like losing two dogs/cats at once. I crying with ya! Peace. TEAM JOEY
I feel you bro. Only fish keepers get it. We look at our fish like others do their dogs and cats. They're our pets, we love em. Especially when we grow em up from babies to big fish.
I'm sorry for your loss Joey :(
I’m sorry my friend, losing a fish is never easy, especially such gorgeous sting ray,
I’ve only ever gotten emotional over two videos I’ve watched on TH-cam, that being Brian and Steve’s passing.. this one hit me just as hard, I remember the first video they made their appearance.. I’m truly sorry for your loss my friend.. the whole community is here for you!
Sounds like the least you can do is document it as much as possible and look for a scientist. Building up the knowledge base about these fish is super interesting.
The male "got" the little female... Big Lady said NOT TODAY! and destroyed him. Yup. That's my story. I'm sticking to it in my head.
Condolences, this is gotta be heart wrenching. I’ve watched you since you got them. And to lose two. Hang in there ❤
I set up a lake Tanganyika tank a few years ago. Over the course of the years the Maltese killed 3 caudopunctatus and 3 leleupi. The Multies would breed and their territory would press. I thought of 55 gallon aquarium would be big enough for 12 of these little fish, but they had other plans. For the time being I have a 55 gallon with five Shell dwellers in it. And I'm scared to put anything else in there. I might try some cyps or paracyps. But really I don't even want them anymore. Too violent. I might just re home them into a smaller aquarium and start over.
Oh no!! She went cray cray. Sorry about the loss. I know the rays are your fav
