- The U.S. Army's ATACMS, recognized as the pinnacle of modern precision strike artillery, has long been a stalwart force. Yet, in the ever-evolving landscape of military technology, what proves effective today may not suffice tomorrow. Recognizing this, the Army is forging ahead with the development of a cutting-edge long-range weapon-the Precision Strike Missile, or PrSM-an innovation poised to succeed the aging ATACMS.
Recent demonstrations of the ATACMS's ability on the Ukrainian battlefield, where it played a pivotal role in a successful strike against Russia's helicopter fleet, mark a significant achievement. Yet, this success prompts a forward-looking perspective. The baton is poised to be passed, bringing with it the anticipation of even greater capabilities and strategic advantages in the ever-shifting dynamics of modern warfare. This development makes us wonder; what advantages does the new Precision Strike missile offer?

US already had 1800 Expired ATACMS and several thousand still active.
"But ATACMS was already perfect!"
"I know. But we can always make it MORE perfect!"
never underestimate the desire for an engineer to say "Hold my beer"
@@christophermartin8366 Especially when you've got a Congress who likes their military to be two decades ahead of everybody else.
@@christophermartin8366 Yep, increased range and increased payload and increased speed makes it more perfect.
A 300+ mile range will be a benefit in the Pacific Theater.
Yes, China certainly does not want this to be developed & deployed ROK could put china in a bad spot, where I think they need to be.
Well, the PrSM Missiles have a range of up to 650 km...
And they're working on extending that range even more. With chinese navy in mind...
Google "MRC Typhon Philippines"
@@dioghaltasfoirneartach7258 PrSM probably now has a range close to 750km. They won't say but they mentioned easily beating 500km during testing.

Nice cope.
You can jam GPS, but you can't jam inertial guidance.
Yes but that's 1960 stuff with new stickers on it
We might have to send a couple of these to Ukraine for field testing
it will be destroyed just like every other US weapon system in Ukraine

Why? Look at you trying to get a couple likes by mentioning Ukraine because you don't like Russia. lmao do you want to explain to me why Russia's had major success in jamming American made gps guided munitions? Would you like to explain why Russia is able to take territory continuously while Ukraine is retreating? funding can be shored up Manpower cannot. the manpower shortage is Ukraine's problem and Ukraine's problem only. now that we know nato troops will never deploy to Ukraine because Ukraine will never be nato then we should also know Russia is going to take over Ukraine
Nice closing argument. PRSM might accelerate provisioning Ukraine with ATACMS.
We got the long range version last month....
I figured that this is why they gave the Ukrainians a batch at the end of March. US Army logistics people were planning the decommissioning of oldest batches. So, they figured that it's better to give those old missiles to Ukrainians. It can't hurt. Actually, it worked out great.
@@monmouthnj Personally, I think Biden should bypass Congress altogether and hire the Ukrainians as contractors to decommission older batches of weapons. We have to pay companies to decommission out of date weapons - a fact that the people bitching about "handouts" to Ukraine just don't understand. They are truly idiots. We are replacing everything sent to Ukraine with newer weapons, built by AMERICAN companies, sending all the expenditures back into the US economy.
@@monmouthnj Yes, Lockheed stopped making new ATACMS close to a year ago
@@pat-orl They started making PrSM instead. First batch has been delivered in December last year. So, in theory they can "pass" 2000 or so of ATACMS to Ukraine.
This is a great addition for the ARMY.
I say combat testing in Ukraine..

Ukraine wont acquire PrSM because the US won't make it available to them. This missile is in early stage of production and is required by US units.
Yes, until PrSM is available in big numbers it is for the US, BUT that means as PrSM are available ATACMS can be shifted to Ukraine.

PRSM looks amazing - I wonder why the boost part is not jettisoned in flight - extra weight and drag. Now UKR can get "ochen mnoga" (very many) ATACMS. Yay, Hope they keep the factories running - we need to build up a greater inventory and have warm factories given the geopolitical situation
Maybe not jettisoned because it could fall on civilian's head or friendly troops?
PrSM is going to win for sure! 🤘
iskander is far better than this and russinas have lots and lots of it
@@AkshayKumar-vg2pi bs. And russia isnt producing anything the world cant buy anywhere else. Russia has no high tech industry. Even those iskander missiles are made with western parts. so dont tell bs here.
@@AkshayKumar-vg2pi It's a different kind of missile. Iskander isn't supplied to field commanders and is twice the size and 6 times the weight. Atacms is a quick deployable tactical missile and Iskander is a short range strategic missile. You can’t rapidly fire one as an enemy target present itself, instead you plan for them to be fired as part of coordinated missile salvos against fixed targets like power supplies, factories or apartment blocks.
Tornado-S can take care of that while in the ground.
The Iskander-M will hunt them down too . . . including US Patriot System.

Thanks, Military TV.
I am so glad the US and others are starting to use RAM jet power for missiles to increase range.
Great report!!!
Right now ATACMS have been shifted to several areas around the South China Sea near Chinese illegal militarized artificial islands. These would be used to bring those bases under fire and neutralize them. This takes much pressure off the limited naval supply on US Task Forces if a war was to break out. Yes, as PrSM comes on line those will be immediately sent to the western Pacific where with the ranges stated would make them a very powerful support and deterrent because PrSM would be able to hit China from points in the southern Japanese island chain, Taiwan, and all around the island countries in the South China Sea. Then I can see all the extra ATACMS being moved to Eastern NATO countries and UKRAINE!
What are you doing in south china ? Warmonger 😂
@@johnnewman1483 What is China doing in the South China Sea. Building illegal islands to try to claim natural gas fields that already belong to Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malvasia and a few other countries. The US follows international law, call UNCLOS of which China was a major contributor to the treaty and was one of the first signatories. They currently are challenging open water rights of all these nations and they commonly challenge US warships almost colliding with them. They have actually collided with Philippine ships. So that's what the US is doing there. These illegal bases, ruled thus by the UNCLOS Court, have been militarized and would be used in case of a Taiwan invasion.
@@johnnewman1483 China will blockade that whole area when time comes if US did not do anything. It's the gateway of West to East. Totally war worthy, even more than oil fields.

Great improvement if it doesn't cost the equivalent of some small country's annual budget per missle
How about sending some of the former stock & send to Ukraine?
Thats the plan, Stan👍🏻
Send it all.
Old ATACMS near the end of life are for sure coming.
It better have a backup navigation system so it's not solely reliant on GPS.
Now, question is how do they take to actually make. Just because it's better than the ATACMS, it could take twice as long, 3 x longer to make each unit. Could take less time. 🤷♂️
also at what cost? the problem with US made weapons are that no other nations can afford those in meaningful quantity.
Main question, our ATACMS M57 warhead is more Powerful than that of our PrSM Missiles, so basically, it would require 2 PrSM Missiles to do the job of 1 of our ATACMS M57. However, our PrSM Missiles travel almost twice as far.
I don't see this weapon replacing attacms definitely fight side-by-side
@@AmirShafeek Indeed! Echoing your statement 100%

@@dioghaltasfoirneartach7258 The fundamental missions are different. ATACMS makes a big hole in the ground and the PRSM puts lots of penetrating holes all over an airfield. destroying many aircraft. They both fit in HIMARS containers.
Whatever happened to smokeless propellants? Maybe it doesn't matter if launching far from the front. But if you're using a ramjet, I would think you could take the small performance hit with double base or triple base propellants. Then you don't have an obvious smoke trail going back to your launchers.

When I saw these atacms they look like liberty caps, but the new successor to the atacms should be named PrSM aka 'liberty cap missile' because they look identical to liberty caps but second thoughts, they could call them aka magic mushroom missiles.
Yes it would as long as the Prsm costs are the same as ATACM, but something tells me they are much more expensive. These escalating prices on arms and ammunition is out of hand and needs to be brough back to earth.
A question that comes to mind is whether the advent of the PRSM will make the stocks of the older Atacms less important to US forces and therefore make them more available to Ukraine
Put propellers on front and swivels ring ms on sides
There a site showing what all USA weapons have been tested in ukraine?
Shouldn’t be so quick to get rid of cluster munitions, this could use a cluster warhead.
This was an international treaty.
@@FlyMeAirplane not with America, it’s just official policy. America never signed any international treaties on land mines or cluster munitions.

600 miles and 2 missiles in 1 pod? So what's inside 5kg heat warhead?
sounds like more ATACMS will be released from US this year ----
According to Defense Department budget documents, the PrSM will cost $1.2 billion, with 110 to be procured in fiscal year 2024 and 190 in FY-25.
Earlier in 2023, the Senate Armed Services Committee urged the Army to procure 400 PrSMs per year while the service has considered issuing multiyear contracts for the system.
these things are worth their weight in gold on a battlefield. ukraine has shown the advantage a system like this gives the attacker.
Need something with a decent ram jet in it
the most important point has to be cost you can´t sustain a war with one single Rocket costs half a million dollar
Can the new Mako hypersonic missile be fired from a HIMARS launcher?
No. That is an aircraft launched weapon.
All ballistic missiles are hypersonic.....
What missile was used on the Pentagon on 9/11/2001? I'm not being a conspiracy theorist. Rumsfeld said it was a missile on live TV.
Depends how fast or how quick the US Aerospace Defence industries, can build and supply the US Army and USMC with PRSM weapons, then the US Government can release ATASM weapon systems to Ukraine equally?
Lockheed Martin makes these weapons, not a bunch of defense contractors together.
Our ATACMS M57, M48 Singular Warhead Missiles (range 300 km, warhead 450 kg) are slated to be Shipped to Ukraine 🇺🇦, together with Enormous Amounts of other Advanced American Weaponry, as soon as obstacles are removed in our House of Representatives...
What are the costs per PrSM missile?
My (only) problem with ATACMS, GMLRS and PrSM is their horrendous costs. And that leads me to the suspucion, that there's a lack of a working market for such weapons.
I'm pretty sure, if US Army would define a platform and its demands, it could allow more competition - e.g. with european companies like MBDA or Rheinmetall.
GMLRS is about $100K per missile but if you blow up a $2M helicopter it's a good deal.
@@FlyMeAirplane It's over $200K per GMLRS. And not every one is a high value hit. If reports are true, more and more get even intercepted.
US generals already say that high cost missiles become a liability if Your enemy forces You to waste it on cheap targets and producing them sucks up all of Your budget.
American weapons always cost more because they are better built and better tech
@@ragedmayhem1 This is only part of the reasons.
@user-iq8oo6uy9o First user of ATACMS in combat destroyed 14 helicopters, some up to $20 million per unit.
How will the PRSM react to GPS jamming? Jamming has already been effective against our weapons in Ukraine.
WEll if the next comflict is with China, America Needs a Long Range delivery system that can do better in close support like C-130's can provide, they can land at forward landing sites and reload a lot for fire power. Better than the long range bombers, being in the Rear of frontlines means a lot when fighting with the Pacific ocean distance to cover.
Yep. US strategy is solid. Island hopping Marine PrSM, Army Typhons, Air Force C-130 and C-17 dropped JASSM-ER (Rapid Dragon). PLAN is going to lose a lot of ships in a war. Probably most of it's navy. Good luck.
ATACMS are incredible guided missiles. Deadly accurate. But an old platform and munitions for them are not plentiful especially the M39 Cluster Bomb. Too bad incredibly effective bomb.
That puts half a dozen PLA Navy ports within range of Taipei. Once the range is extended it will be almost the entire East China seaboard.
What is their guidance system? Russia, and presumably China, has advanced electronic warfare capabilities that interfere with the standard GPS guidance of the ATACMS missiles.
*Yup,,, All 560 ATACMS are on the chopping block,,,*

Recommend extensive field testing in Ukraine!!
It may be months or even over a year or two before the PRSMs are in full production and ready to be deployed overseas. So I doubt Ukraine is going to get them any time soon unfortunately.
Send to Ukraine for real world testing
Range is classified. Please don't give us numbers.
Strictly an American export weapon. If America wanted to destroy something or someone with level of firepower it would use a drone or a fighter jet. Also it just seems to be like a Russian Zircon with a higher price tag.

Taiwan could use a few dozen launchers, and a few hundred PRSMs too, and they can afford to pay for them, and we should see that they get them.
We have to build our PSRM inventory up, then we can provide TACAMS to Ukraine.
So... it's just another missile?
Ever use a mouse? That's the future of fighting. Drones use game controllers (everyone knows mice are more precise). AI Robots rule the ground. The only battles left are in the air, space, and in the sea. Land wars are obsolete.
We can build great stuff. But if we can't establish at least air superiority quickly, these missile want matter in the next great war due to their cost.
Send them to Ukraine for testing against Russian S-400. Existing ATACMS have been successful against S-400.

Why doesn't Ukraine have more attackms. Ukraine would be the perfect proving ground for the PRSM. I hope I don't hear any smokey excuses about sharring new tech. Ukraine is saving our buts right now. I know they have their own reasons to fight but they deserve better allies.
I would assume that the Ukrainians will do fine with the attackms, as the Russians are not what one might call "riding the technology cutting edge". It's smarter for the US to keep the operational and technological details hidden from the enemy until the day when they are needed to fight a more sophisticated adversary. To me, that makes perfect sense.
Remind the Russian trolls all over TH-cam that they no longer have helicopters in Ukraine. LOL
Ukraine becomes the ground to test new arsenals
Ukraine to Moscow is about 600 miles…
PRSM need,s real world testing in Ukraine. against Russian electronic jamming
And this one will be ten times more expensive so the will build only few of them. Ok.
If they build as little as 5,000 of them, that's more than Russia has in total military aircrafts.
I remember when we didn't put our capabilities out there
Small warheads optimized to perform like larger warheads. Going to be a letdown in that regard. ATACMS has a great payload
It's not smart to show our enemies what we got.
This is a potent weapon that will definitely help Ukraine. If not directly, then by freeing ATACMS Ukraine had been asking for during the last two years.
People, wake up..... Russia is in the midst of a war time economy production rates.. Thus way they're able to significantly outproduce the combined arms and ammunition output of NATO countries. Russia is churning out 2 million shells and1500 tanks a year and over 100 long range missiles a month. We need to take this seriously and although it's unreasonable to expect USA, Germany, Spain or Belgium transferring to war economy now, we can still significantly ramp up production of 155mm shells, GMLRS, PRsM, Javelins, Patriot and NASAMS interceptors.... Combined we have a 30 times larger economic output than a 3rd world country like Russia. Let's move and start being serious about this.. OK?
US economy is a welfare balloon. US companies care about riches, Russian companies care about the state. Russia also has all the resources and man power to sustain this war. West cannot even supply Ukraine. Russia pay $25k for a stinger missile equivalent, the US pays 400K. Massive miltary budget and 35 trillion in debt, the west cannot beat Russia on the battlefield.
I'm sure the transformation is well underway, just don't expect the detail to be broadcast on the local nightly news... or TH-cam. 😆
The Ukrainian military will be getting the longer range Atacms that they have not had in the past. We can only pray for the aid package to Ukraine to be voted on and signed by Biden soon. Slava Ukraini
