*UPDATE:* The customer stopped back a few days later and we installed the OEM antenna on the roof so it would solve the issues with the wet headliner. He bought the car in the condition it was in, back up camera and baby shark fin were all ready on there. He did not want to do any further testing with the internal key detection antenna's at this time
Hopefully he asked you to pull that silly cow catcher off the back too!
Just curious you disconnected the aftermarket feed wire at the backend wouldn't it be better to disconnect at the feed just incase it rubs through elsewhere .
the aftermarket crap ends up being the eBay aftermarket crap and it just goes bad after a couple months or the rubber seals go bad
@@190055joe the video feed runs all the way to the front. The power is tapped of that module in the back. He cut the power wire and the video feed is now dead because of it. So it doesn't really matter if it rubs through, because there is no voltage on it anyway
Thanks for your very informative videos. Your patience with wiring and troubleshooting is amazing. You take the time to find the source of a problem. That's inspiring and auto mechanics everywhere should follow your example. Keep up the great work and your videos.

When aftermarket garbage gets installed correctly, we never get to see it! ;D
Back in my early 20s, I lived out in the country for a bit. Lack of street lights at night convinced me to pick up the most AWESOME LIGHT KIT EVER from Walmart... This was long before I was even remotely interested in cars and mechanics and whatnot. Got 'em installed (without reading the directions, of course!), turned 'em on real quick, they worked, waited for nightfall to take a quick drive, and in less than a minute, my car was on fire.
A wasted gatorade and a night of googling later, I figured out why.
Poorly installed aftermarket garbage jumpstarted my career. :D
Hahaha loved the story! I did lol.... for real.... still laughing as a matter of fact haha
LOL, proper installation would have been throwing away the whole kit and going to get good materials ;)
Haha that's funny shit right there

Eric, thank you for putting in the effort to make these videos so viewer friendly. It's a big pain finding and fixing these issues. Adding the photography makes it that much harder.
I do all of my own installations of aftermarket equipment (amateur radio) etc. Watching your videos has greatly changed the way I do installs. Abrasion resistant loom, proper connectors, separate fuse blocks, no vampire connectors. Thanks for the insights into the problems poor installations cause for repair shops.
I had to look up what a vampire connector is, and it looks like a legitimate connector for repairs or aftermarket installs, what is wrong with them?
This is the first time I learned of vampire connectors, thought you meant like just twisted together wires or some shit.
@@ratataran The problem is trying to find them if you're the next guy trying to troubleshoot. They're not foolproof.
Eric has got to be one of the best mechanics out there. He also does a great job of filming as he talks. He has my respect!
Nice man. I get this sort of crap a lot too. Customers get upset at removing the badly installed wiring. Can't win sometimes. The installers need to learn that harnesses need to be insulated to be done correctly.
or use wire that will take the sustained chaffing and sharp edges, yeah I know they'd never use it because of the cost $$$
Glad you guys talk. You both have great diagnostic sites.
I agree with your method of tapping and giggling wires. It works.
Short story... I am an aircraft mechanic. A helicopter was getting an error message from the autopilot. Gyro invalid. I finally found the problem by bumping the circuit breaker panel and noticed the gyro needle jump. A terminal was loose. I was later counseled for improper troubleshooting. I told that person to pound sand. Why didn’t they like me?
It's easy to do that with modern meters and scopes. They've got so many features.
Oh, how I would love a Big Clive / SMA collaboration video.
It is fancy but nothing more important than knowledge. This can be done with a multimeter that has the capability to capture max/min readings. Trust me, I can give you all the scan tools & scope meters and you wouldn't fix crap if you didn't know where to begin or understand the system you're trying to fix.

I really like your 'practical' approach to diagnosis. I wonder about the other shops that send their 'problems' to you. Do they just do the easy jobs only??? I don't think viewers should go crazy on the comments because of Eric disconnecting/deleting/defeating aftermarket stuff.
I mean, Eric's job is to fix the car's issue, and if that is caused by some external device causing havoc and fixed by removing said contraption, then so be it.
We should all realiz that Eric ain't no car stereo installer, he's a car tech and he's gonna resolve the drivability issue he's been hired to fix. If the owner wants his/her aftermarket stuff back on, then an expert qualified installer should be the one to be hired for the job.
Ty Jesus and ty Eric for at least giving me places to look other than "it's ya bàttery!" My car hasn't had dependable cranking for nearly a year and a half due to very similar issues looking forward to have someone check into these possibilities
What I would have done to fix it, since the problem is a break down of insulation is reinsulate it. With a piece of rubber hose (vacuum line) slit up the side and installed over the wire, tied with small zip ties and maybe file down the sharp edge. This would love all the after market accessories in place and undisturbed.
Hi, I am a new guy in your channel. I have been watching your videos since a few months ago. I was put in my house on medical leave since May 2021 and honestly your videos are awesome as you work on vehicles, explain the procedures, trouble shoots the issues and provide humor or conversation in the process. I used to work on my cars and motorcycles at home, however, my medical situation has kind of taken me away from enjoying my garage and maintaining my cars. Sir, I was looking for someone like yourself in my area and got lucky because it is hard to find someone with your integrity in the auto mechanic field. I just wanted to say that ALL your videos, regardless how simple/logical the issues are do not erase them. I have to stay most of the day at home (cancer I have) and I don't watch other stuff on TV or the internet because it is repetitive/gossip/non productive information. THANK YOU!!!!!!
God bless you all for all the time and effort as well the encouragement that you provided to many of us thank you
The amount of aftermarket junk I've removed that pulls down some of the CAN systems in cars is astounding. Good find!
I love how you spend the time showing the debugging process in your videos. Way to often youtubers will show the beginning then come back with "so that was it" without showing the process. Keep up the great work.

Very Good Diag! Aftermarket crap, installed by non professional = trouble!
"There's your problem lady" I get a kick when he says that.. Why to go Eric O.
Chrysler dealer tech here, that shark fin antenna is not factory. Also, whoever did that hack job wiring is an idiot, wiring should never be run across the face of an airbag. That could interfere with the proper op of the curtain airbag right there. That's a federal offense, as it could be considered tampering with federally mandated safety equipment. One common problem i'm seeing with the factory antenna is the threaded portion of the mast gets broken off in the base of the antenna. Sometimes, the broken part can be unscrewed out, otherwise, the base has to be replaced. That rf hub has to be moved out of the way to replace the base. Seeing your update comment, glad that you were able to figure it out and fix it. Also, if the fobik is not transmitting, putting the fobik on the pushbutton and starting the car with it can help to diag. Edit: The interior antenna for the fobiks is under the center console, that's why the fobiks have to be in that area of the cupholder for the interior antenna to pick up the fobiks. I agree with you, Eric about aftermarket accessories installation, and about never tapping into a module power feed.
Never run anything on the egress side of airbag. Preferably not near it at all. Almost impossible to avoid on LE vehicle equipment installs though.
How about never tying into a circuit that also could just kill your car from even working!!!
It should be on its own circuit. Take the time to run wires correctly.
I need to troubleshoot my antenna as the satellite radio portion has no reception, this video is helpful for locating parts.
Yea the only place you should really run power from is the battery or the power distribution center. Make sure you use an inline fuse (in this case they didnt do that either which would of saved the customer from a no-start). Then if necessary use a relay and connect that to either the ignition, or reverse light, to power say aftermarket powered windows or a backup camera, respectively.
That's what's wrong with this country. Regulated to death. Compliant little sheep. Fuck the government. Remove the damn airbag.
Watching u figure this out and ur wheels just going in that head really inspires me to keep working on automobiles thanks Eric O and thanks Mrs O for the hard work at the desk
Best detective show ever ‘SMA’. 👍👍
I work on forklift trucks and I've also found that anything non factory is usually the cause of any electrical issues. Forklifts are a hack job paradise.

Hi Eric, It's all very well putting after market stuff on your car, but get it done professionally unless you really know what your doing. Your video just goes to show how a botched install can screw up the car's systems so easily... Great videos Eric thanks for making them... All the best from Peter in the UK.
Thank you for the great videos! Information mixed with great family content. I would rather watch SMA vids, than prime time television!
Comment: I wish all mechanics was as caring, honest, sincere and just a darn good person as you.
Literally had a red journey come in today with a no start, and it was red too! Mine was a 2016 though, with the 4 cylinder, and it still cranked. Turns out it needed either a CKP or the harness. Chrysler actually has a recall for that specific issue so we sent it to the dealership
As a 2013 journey owner, I learned some valuable information for the future. Great trouble shooting skills and very well documented.
So it was not a Dodge problem, but sloppy aftermarket equipment installation! Great video!
give it time
These clips give me a new appreciation for how smart you have to be to be a good mechanic.
When I saw "Journey" I thought it was a video about your trip to Staten Island. :) But this is good too.
yeah a vlog on the island trip would be nice
I agree . But ya know hunting season coming up and all 🙄
When I was a kid one of the magazine subscriptions my mother bought for us boys was Popular Mechanics. One of the regular monthly features was a mystery car ailment that was stumping all previous mechanics until old Smokey had a look-see. He spent the time to thoroughly diagnose and trace down the source of the problem. I loved reading those articles, and later when I started working on cars I remembered a lot of the crazy stories - and then I became the guy figuring out what others gave up on. Cars are a whole lot more complex now, but I appreciate your methodical way of not only tracing problems. - but looking at the whole car and related systems.
As a mechanic I thought tools would be my main expense....then around 2000 every car manufacturer decided to change their styles of fuses every 3 years or so with Ford leading the pack. Now I carry to full trays of fuses in the truck only to find....there is always a style I’m missing...oh the saga....
“Sent from another shop”. They couldn’t figure out a blown fuse? Sad. You need to be an electrical engineer and a computer programmer to work on modern vehicles but old fashioned diagnostic steps will always save you. Another great video Eric.
For those who do not know, You can push the Push To Start button a second time to stop the engine from cranking. Also if you hold it in, while driving, the engine will shut off.
That’s what good mechanics does. I enjoyed watching it. Learned something new. How to be a hunter a good hunter.
I was screaming at my screen when you had the vantage on Low Amps 20, lmao.
Thank you for showing how to properly trace down a short in the system. Working in auto parts for almost 30 years we get that question all the time and now we have a video to direct someone to .
You should have had your number one tech, Miss Marie, handle that. 🤔 Usually backup camera power is connected to the back up light.
paying attention and being persistant is the key to success. well done
Eric, your distrust for aftermarket equipment and installation is well justified.
I've seen too many cars where an aftermarket stereo amp was installed with no fuse or circuit breaker. The system required a 100 amp circuit but only installed using 10 gauge wire. Should have been 4 gauge or better. The wire was run through the rocker panel, with like the Journey, no anti-chafe on the wires. Good way to burn a car to the ground.
Out of the referral work you get, any idea how many new customers you pick up as full time clients?
Working 20 plus years as an RV tech I have sat in wonder as to why the rig I am working on hasn't burned to the ground. When I tell the customer what I have found they are usually not amused by being the recipient of a previous hack job.
Amazing that the first shop they took it to didn't find the problem.
The dealership I worked at would remove all aftermarket accessories from their used vehicles before they sold them. Dealer principal didn’t want anything on used vehicles that wasn’t an factory installed option.
Oh, I wish every dealer was like that,a long time ago I bought a vw golf and had some trouble, I went under the dashboard and got shocked, the amount of cable and aftermarket junk I removed was just ridiculous and I hope I won't see it again.
the backup camera should be tied into the red wire on the rear backup lights so they only turn on when the back up lights are on. been looking at Dodge Journey videos for common problems as I just got one recently. i'm glad this issue is caused by a faulty install of a back up camera and not an issue with the vehicle itself.
Love the way u think!! But I was laughing when u said "that's factory" reminded me of Vice Grip Garage, lol!!!
My 2013 Journey has twice now, done the same thing; no power and no cranking. I had the battery tested after charging, and they said it is working fine, with no cell issues. When the vehicle first did this, it unlocked, then there were no interior or dash lights, and it clicked once instead of cranking. I got a jump, it started, and only ran with the cables. The next day I went to the vehicle, and it operated as if it never happened. Ran well until yesterday. I heard a constant clicking noise, while the vehicle was OFF, and the doors wouldn't lock, so I manually locked them. This morning there was just enough power to unlock my driver's door, then nothing happened except that same clicking when I pressed the fob because it said Key Not Detected. After I attached my jumper box, I had to start the vehicle with the fob pressing the ignition button. Then it started. Once started, it operated as if it never had an issue. The thing is, it never said Key Not Detected yesterday, or the previous time it has acted up. The mechanic thinks it might be a low battery in the fob, however, I don't know if the fob would affect the interior lights not functioning when it trips out. Is there anything you would suggest, as I have to drive this vehicle, and can't just go trade it in at the moment? Thank you. (Also, I have not had any aftermarket changes to my wiring performed, lol)
I put 154K on a Journey. When I traded it, it ran like a Swiss watch. And the ONLY problem I had with it was warping rotors.
Tried Napper rotors and calipers - no joy. The only ones that lasted any significant time were the OEM parts. Otherwise, that Journey was a dang fine car and I was kinda sad to see it go. Of course, I didn’t stuff any after-market crap in it either.
That 3.6L engine was no slouch either. It would haul the mail if you asked it to. One of the very few Chrysler products I enjoyed having.
Thanks Eric. Outstanding video!

Sure there are people where SMA/Eric was not the first garage that tried to fix the problem, but I hear Eric often say "brought here by another garage". Some garages are part swappers and wenn that doesn't help, they send the car to the next garage in this case SMA/Eric.
Eric never shames the other garage by name (he's nice that way), and the customer knows what went down whether there's a video posted or not, so personally I don't see how "another garage" would have any reason to complain.
