Need help decluttering? I am your person!
In January 2021, I decided try out The 30 Day Minimalism Game.
This is ultimately how I ended up counting all my clutter and TRACKING my "Declutter Number" to keep me motivated.
I'm currently at over 8500 items!
So what is the Minimalism Game?
It was created by The Minimalists.
The game lasts for a month. During that time, you declutter the number of items that correspond with the day of the month.
    1 item on Day 1.
    15 items on Day 15.
    And so on...
Things get tougher starting around day 20!
When that first month was up - I couldn't believe I'd decluttered almost 500 items from my home!
I was happy but also a bit frustrated.
Because I looked around and realized...there was still a lot more to do.
So I committed to another month. And then another.
I continued The Minimalism Game for a full year!
With almost 6000 items leaving my home.
I realized over that time, that seeing my "Declutter Number" increase was VERY motivating for me.
Even so, I was strict with what I counted as "decluttered".
If I had to throw out an old pair of shoes - but bought another pair - that didn't count!
After all - I'd replaced them!
I was looking for an overall reduction of the inventory in my home.
After a full year of The Minimalism Game - I was ready for a change.
So I created a few new games that I played with friends.
The "Declutter 100" Game - Where you challenge yourself to declutter 100 items in a month - at whatever pace works for you!
    and
The "Fast Five" Game - Where you set a timer for 5 minutes and challenge yourself to decluttering 5 items a day
Both of these played on the "fun" factor of The 30 Day Minimalism Game but were a bit more sustainable for the majority of people.
Gamifying a tough task can really make a difference.
I think it's important to say that when I first started decluttering - I focused on my own clutter first.
I didn't want to force my family into minimalism.
I wanted to WELCOME them into minimalism.
Even though it was tempting to think it was THEIR clutter that was the problem...
I knew I had to work on myself and my own decluttering and minimalism journey first.
I focused on easy wins to stay motivated like trash, broken items, stuff with missing pieces, duplicates, anything that was an immediate & easy "Go!"...
And I learned to keep the clutter mess I was tackling "small"
One drawer, shelf, cabinet or box at a time.
I went through my home focusing on only my stuff...
    and...
when my husband saw the improvement in our shared closet...
He was motivated to declutter his own clothes!
Having my husband as a "Declutter Buddy" helped push our progress forward.
Working alongside a friend or trusted family member is a concept called "body doubling."
It's very effective in decluttering - especially for those with ADHD.
Having another person present helps us stay motivated and on track.
With incremental positive changes, we began transforming our home.
And learning what worked best for us.
My husband did really well with a timer.
If I wanted to tackle an area that was mostly his items...
I'd say, "Are you available for 30 minutes this afternoon in the garage?"
Sometimes he wasn't. Usually he said yes.
Because 30 minutes FEELS like a small commitment.
I found that as we got rolling decluttering together - he often worked longer than 30 minutes.
Once or twice, he was ready to stop early. And I let him.
I wanted to keep the decluttering experience positive.
With my two kids - slow and steady was the way.
I waited quite awhile before introducing my kids to decluttering
I didn't want them to be afraid of the process. They were 4 and 8 when I started very actively decluttering.
Decluttering is a life skill that I wanted them to learn - just the same as cooking or laundry.
So it was important that they didn't have negative feelings about it.
When their items "disappear" behind their backs - it can really hinder their trust in you and the process.
We want decluttering to be a natural part of life - but it requires that the person who owns the item be the one who makes the decisions.
While my husband was motivated by a timer.
My kids were motivated by games and incentives.
One really fun thing we did was play store.
I pulled out ALL of their toys, explained the physical limits of how much they could keep and they "bought" back their toys starting with favourites and then stopping when their toy library was full.
They kept some favourites in the playroom and the remaining toys and games were donated to kids in need.
    All this to say...
I decluttered over 8500 things from my home because I was stubborn.
I figured out what worked best for us and I just kept going.
I kept decluttering until LAYERS of clutter left my home.
I decluttered well beyond what I originally thought would be required.
The biggest step is just starting.
    You can do this!
Let me know in the comments what you're decluttering today!

I enjoyed your story! I just moved into a 2/2 apartment after not moving for 30 years! My previous place was a 2/1 with 18 steps to the front door. One of my 2 bedrooms was basically a storage room. I moved on Labor Day and donated lots before my move. But as I unpack (I'm here just 2 weeks now) I am creating multiple boxes to donate to a local church rummage sale in October (A month from now). I eventually want to have 2 functional "bedrooms". This apartment was remodeled and has new LPV flooring. It has adjustable shelving in the kitchen. And although I lost my previous walk in closet, I gained 2 linen closets, a small pantry in the kitchen. This will one day be a perfect little place for me (no steps, beautiful views of trees from most windows). Organizing & making life style changes takes SO much energy & can be a bit depressing at times. But I actually love letting things go! I hope someone can use some of my things, that makes me feel good! I'm so proud of you and your success with the whole family!!! ❤
