I remember Neville well.my dad jimmy Allen was a guard on Mersey rail ,when Neville drove the 503/8s.I used to go to work with my dad,he let me operate the door controls and do the bell ,and often had cabrides with Neville and other drivers. Going down to mollington street and sitting in the drivers seats of all the 47,37,40 20 class locos.Neville was a lovely kind hearted man.a gentleman.as was my dad too. Thankyou so much indeed for posting up this video.it has brought back many happy memories. Thanku kindly.
Excellent, very interesting. Reminds me of a road trip me and my mates did around 1986 upto Liverpool and Birkenhead docks. The John Summers ore trains had just stopped running and all the industrial shunting engines were just sat there ,all very sad. The railway and level crossing were still in use at Birkenhead and seem to remember a large warehouse with Cheshire Lines Committee painted on the side of building which was behind a lage wall opposite the level crossing. Thanks for posting.
My dad was born in Duke st and I would stay at my nans so I new it well At Ann's grove. The decline of Birkenhead is so sad . Thanks luv that was great 💕
I worked with a couple of Birkenhead lads, later E Port but sadly, none of these lads. I started on the Railway in 1990. I just caught the last of the great BR days before we all succumbed to Privatisation. Happy days.
Even the remains of the level crossing on Canning street shown at 7:22 are all gone now, and the old footbridge, just in case anyone's watching who doesn't know. You can see it on google maps street view. I can remember when it was still there, and the signal box.
Really great to see. I have a few photographs of the dock railway back from the eighties but I really wish I had taken a photograph of the original Hooton signal box.
i did a railtour round there in 24th June 1989 but never seen any pcis of that tour - was called the cheshire Cat from memory run by Hertforshire railtours
There was two signal boxs Hooton North Jcn and Hooton South Jcn , Hooton Sth was the bigger box , I was a Signalman at Hooton North in 1969 / 70 , then it closed , before that I'd worked Signal boxs at Wallasey Grove Rd , Canning St nth , Brook St , then went on to work all the boxs on the Wirral , including James St P S B , and then Sandhills before I finished I'd worked about 23 boxs including Rock ferry box , happy days .
So, there was I, thinking 'a taxi ride from Elesmere Port to Birkenhead Docks????'. Well its the Wirral Channel and it's free.... Great Video and my thanls to the doner. Two things I picked up from this was: one always expect train stations to look exactly like they did the last time you used them and 30 years is a lot shorter when you are looking back at them than looking forward.
I've always wondered why there are abandoned railway tracks in Birkenhead town, always thought they should do something with them, it's a shame they are just left there to rot
Good old Lee, or young Lee as he was then. Bet he'd rather be driving a 47 to Birkenhead Docks than driving a 220 out of Newcastle now! Superb video of great times gone. JG.
Now they've ripped up the track from Bidston docks (next to b'head North TMD down towards corporation Road and put a stupidly big cycle lane and some grass
nostalgia is great in 420 video if hd or god forbid 4k was about when this video was made you would see every shitty nappy every pissy mattress every platform turd the run was a shit hole if tetanus had a body it would get a tetanus shot

The then and now video clips put it into perspective.

The second man on the 47 is my dad when he was a driver at Ellesmere Port
I live a few doors away from your old house in Eastham,I work with train crew at BC who remember your dad.
Thank you for sharing this, have followed this route many times and its great to see the absolute correct alignment
I started on the railway in 1986 this brings back great memories.
The driver Neville looks about 15 here. Well thrashed in places. RIP George, I bet you were a hoot to work with.

amazing to see it all. good to see the level crossing at canning street in operation.

Great, video, certainly captures the time 🤓👍
Great video thanks. Bridge at 5;56 is Green Lane not St Paul’s Rd, Brittania Pub on corner.
Absolutely loving this video
Amazing. I remember it well. Its changed even since your recent clips. Footbridge now gone
We have a video on the canning street bridge removal too.
Ur channel and informative vids r great thanx. I luv the train vids.. Very interesting
Interesting archive footage!
Very nice footage here
The days when you could run through points, drive from the wrong cab and buffer straight up. A year later second men were gone...
Brilliant vid but I think the bit that said St Paul's Rd was Green Lane, with The Royal Standard pub on the corner
Could be, i will check it out
"Little Lee" Young Driver, think he moved North Eastern Region..🤔
He did indeed. To Newcastle and with XC. JG
