The infamous baby belling stoves , they had baby belling stoves everywhere on B.R , mainly up in the signal boxes , many a time I’ve done my grub on one of those on a twelve hour shift
I know Chris, the guy who was instructing you, he was my area operations manager many years ago at First Great Eastern as it was back then, railwayman through and through is Chris.
this was by far the best one yet. its amazing how the guys there spend their times working to keep the line operatingand for them to allow you to make this video possible GG to them for this and really enjoyed the vid mate.
I was a Secondman at Kings cross 1974-78 loved driving these locomotives to leeds and Doncaster .Great video brought back some memories.I was not to keen on the boilers though before the days of ETH Class 55 Deltics were my Favourite
I've actually had this loco on the mainline before it was retired and it was a proper horse. Inside seamills tunnel wide open with all 2580hp blasting out the roof and off the walls. Happy days.
Squirrel and The Epping to Ongar railway are just round the corner from me, well worth a day out on one of the open days. The heritage bus fleet takes over local bus services as a nice treat.
I was very pleased with the quality and content of the video - and with the results of the volunteers' hard work. I did travel once on the Epping-Ongar line. Around 1979-1980, two work colleagues and I took a whole day off to travel on the line, meeting at Oxford Circus. The booking clerk made out a set of green paper travel passes - no normal cardboard tickets (someone else in the queue thought I was renewing a season ticket. It was quite clear that London Underground was pretending that the line was not part of the Tube network: it wanted to close it. Thank goodness that the line was taken over. Perhaps I will fit it in next time I am in London. Toronto is a bit too far for a weekend in Ongar! All the best to Squirrel and the railway.
Spotted the little stove and a pair of legs to the left :D Love all the sounds these things make, the squeal of the brakes, the hiss of the air systems, what a brilliant adventure!
I was lucky enough to have a footplate ride from Gloucester to Paddington on Class 47 SEVERN many years ago thanks to my father Wilf Redfern and a colleague. Originally only to go part way but no relief driver at Reading. Incredible experience sat on the right hand side dressed in a BR orange vest doing 100mph with one traction motor out.
Well, this was just absolutely fascinating! I loved how Chris the instructor simply trusted you to operate the controls as per his advice, giving you the confidence and not limiting your input. The icing on the cake is the ability to move my iPad around to be involved in the scene and in the cab.Very clever...thanks so much.
Good to see the line in use. I was on the Central Line Project Team in the 90s when this section was closed due to lack of use. I spent two years in Derby on the 92TS tube train design team: these trains are still running on the Central Line. I then came down to London to upgrade the London underground train radio systems.
First time I've seen in a class 47..what a machine..lots still making money today...golden age when boys would always look over bridges etc to get a look at one of these ...aaaah simpler days and all the better for it
I love this line , especially busy at North Weald movement wise on event days like their spring/autumn Diesel galas-well worth a visit and easy access from London. For the diesel guys they usually have present 2x class 03, 20, 31, 33, 37, 45, 47 ,dmus inc thumper and static shunter at Ongar station approach plus usually at least 1 guest loco. I think they also still have a 25 but it has been off site for ages.
Hi my name is Phil Holt.I have driven a number of these locomotive in my time on the footplate I did 50yrs on the footplate from 1961 as a fireman till 2011 I finished my time out at longsight as a driver Regards Phil.
Great video! It's my first VR180 video, although in 2024 I'm late to the party! I always wondered what that noise was as I remember hearing it when these were in use on the WCML.
Great to see you plugging the Epping-Ongar Railway. Don't know if they still do, but they used to provide a link from the end of the Underground line to North Weald Station, then use the vintage London and Regional buses to get people fo the North Weald Airshow and the Tigermeet there every year through the 80's and 90's. The odd years they couldn't provide rail services to North Weald, really impacted the enjoyment of the trip to and from the Airshows. Sorry, I haven't been in touch much recently Paul, but will remain a sub for as long as I can. Great job, best wishes, Whiskey 28 / MRW.
Honestly squirrel when i started watching you a couple of years back now when i first saw the euro truck sim videos i thought man this is cool, and made me build my first pc rig just for ets2, And didnt think you would ever do something like this, but after watching that this is next level stuff, yes i dont have a vr headset my self but my nephew does so ill have to try it on his, But even just moving the mouse around the cockpit if you like its so realistic and immersive, It felt like i was in the cab with you as a passenger, And thats the first time ive ever seen inside of a train cab, and watching you do the controls, theres more to it than just pushing a button, But honestly squirrel what an amazing video, and that you have enabled it with VR is even cooler, Looking forward to rest of the vr videos, just wish i had a vr headset myself, even though ive said before am not a fan of it but after trying my nephews one, its made think again just wow
Wow, never seen this tech on TH-cam. Great stuff. Just like Train Sim but real. The Cass 47 is one of my fave locos. Lost faith when you asked what a class 20 was not even noticing the Class 45 behind it. Good to see some 70s blue grey rolling stock as most today is steam era. Still great stuff and glad you enjoyed it. Chris was full of knowledge, have to get up there for a drive, I will start saving now.
Wow haven't seen so many RT's in one sitting since my bus spotting days down Catford garage O.o Do love the 47, only diesels I ever drove were the 73 and pretend "drives" with my uncle in his 33 as a kid, the 73 was on the Tonbridge-Redhill line I was hitching a lift of on a night mail train and the driver says to me "you want a go?" and I am like "ooooooh yeess" and it was over so quickly as we neared into the outskirts of Redhill. I found it was like powering a heavy boat, a little tweak here, a little brake there and the thing lumbered on its own merry way :) Cool to see the old line, I only ever went on it in LT times.
This is fantastic. I watched it on my oculus go. To see the loco straight ahead whilst being able to turn and watch the commentator worked really well. Well done👍
As a trainspotting kid of 15i n 1977 i had the pleasure to briefly drive one of these class 47s at Landore diesel depot in Swansea. The asked me to start it up but being a kid i thought one press of the engine start button would be sufficient thinking along the lines of a car starting.I had to hold down the button for a good few moments. Then as we trundled along the rails the driver said brake but i thought hitting the brake lever would stop this monster immediatly...Oops! The shouts of brake brake brake from the panic stricken driver as we hit the points which were in the wrong position saw us jump and derail. Not quite sure how he explained that one but i didnt hang around to find out...Ahh the good old days of british rail...
I admire a video that would give me the freedom to look at the ceiling or the reverse direction from where the subject is happening. It's like playing Half-Life 2 and jumping on Alyx's head while she talks you through exposition.
That was an awesome experience thank you for sharing. There’s something so satisfying about doing it in real life that the Sims can never capture. When I was doing my flight lessons in the helicopter had so many hours in flight simulators but that first feeling of leaving the ground there was something magical to it I’m sure it was the same with the train. I would love to see one of these in a truck.
What a fascinating video, great to watch in the Rift for the 3D goodness! The first production Class 20? Wow. I remember sitting in th car at the crossing many times as a kid in the 70s on my way to school, waiting for 20s to shunt coal wagons about at Linby pit. I can still hear that fantastic chopping sound in my head now. I'd love to see one being driven again. Thanks Squirrel!
When I first realized you could move the camera I was amazed. Then when it was pretty blurry image quality I was disappointed. Then when I saw it can be raised up to 1440p I was again amazed
Well Squirell that was a brilliant video. Although I live in North Yorkshire, I am really tempted to go on a driver experience day like you did. Many thanks for a truly great upload!

Is this real ???
MAN, you have 5k graphic that's awesome
I have to say these simulators today are looking veeeeery realistic now...
^^
Meh, the train driver didn't look that real to me :)
The light ray modelling is particularly good.
i have to say those jokes are so old now...
VijfBarkie. Not as old as you
Lol
You can tell that its British made right away when you see that it has a place for a kettle lol
Wahaha! Legend :D
I know a driver who cooked a steak on a hotplate of a locomotive once
Even the Class 37s had one but no toilet !
The class 50 had a pasty/pie warmer under the hot plate lol
The infamous baby belling stoves , they had baby belling stoves everywhere on B.R , mainly up in the signal boxes , many a time I’ve done my grub on one of those on a twelve hour shift
I know Chris, the guy who was instructing you, he was my area operations manager many years ago at First Great Eastern as it was back then, railwayman through and through is Chris.
In a couple years we'll see Squirrel operate a cargo ship.
or a passenger jet
Or the space X rocket
damn all the way in the future lol
Or causing havoc in Finland.
or in a tank
BR got their money's worth out of these excellent locos. As a diehard steam freak this is hard to admit!
this was by far the best one yet. its amazing how the guys there spend their times working to keep the line operatingand for them to allow you to make this video possible GG to them for this and really enjoyed the vid mate.
Amazing man. It's just incredible how far you've come with this channel!!
In this day and age it’s so cool to see something so analog! I loved this
same here
Train sim world 2020 just reached another level !😂
And in 2019 as well!
I was a Secondman at Kings cross 1974-78 loved driving these locomotives to leeds and Doncaster .Great video brought back some memories.I was not to keen on the boilers though before the days of ETH
Class 55 Deltics were my Favourite
The moment you see Paul's big smile, you know it's going to be a fun video.
I've actually had this loco on the mainline before it was retired and it was a proper horse. Inside seamills tunnel wide open with all 2580hp blasting out the roof and off the walls. Happy days.
As an EOR working volunteer, I saw the Class 47 being rebuilt to how it is now. well done you guys. Lovely loco.
Squirrel and The Epping to Ongar railway are just round the corner from me, well worth a day out on one of the open days. The heritage bus fleet takes over local bus services as a nice treat.
The VR 180 worked a treat it was fantastic to look around the cab as the 47 was moving, and spotting the class 20 just made all the better .
That was really enjoyable, and I'm not usually interested in trains.

I almost felt like crying... such nostalgia there. Simply brilliant!

Once in 2017 I was let into the cabin of a Class 222 in Nottingham while the train was on service for East midlands Railway.
I loved that moment!
Good to see the line in use. I was on the Central Line Project Team in the 90s when this section was closed due to lack of use. Old boys are so important for the memories of our heritage. Great video.
Perfect use of VR180
Squirrel, you might be on to something. It's cool to actually be able to look and see when you point at something off-screen.
What a fantastic machine !
That was treat. Thanks, Paul!
Literally just been this summer and paid a fiver for a ride in the 20. It's a lovely line and I was quite pleased when this popped up!
Such a childhood dream, I was born in 1980 in Seaham, a coal mining town. I did get this train for Christmas once so I did get to drive it!
Great video and very interesting information and first time I've seen VR180!
What a great experience!
Beautiful part of history kept so well preserved!
Thank you Squirrel.

Train Sim World 2020 looks as beautiful as ever.
Great video. Love the cab view and the fact that I could look about like I was in the cab. Thanks
The best use of VR on TH-cam so far!! Brilliant video!
these graphics are phenomenal!!!
I really enjoyed this.
I love the fact there's a hob there for a kettle and steamin cuppa tea!
Fabulous video sir. This is what TH-cam is all about.
Wow! What an experience!
Amazing video. So doing this next year.

Love the VR180

Whiskey 28 / MRW.
Epic video of Epping.
Hope you had a lot of fun driving the 47, i miss driving the 47, they were a good work horse.
Really enjoyed that well done on the filming
How cool is this, this is the first time I'm seeing this on youtbe ! Great video and I love moving around it makes it more realistic. Great job !
Imagine finding a piece of railroad and it is building many many years ago. Love history.
Good video, love to see the others too.
We call them railways in the UK, not railroads.
This was such a cool video glad you got to drive a real train
Excellent content.
Loved the Underground reference marker fact.
This is a brilliant video.
this series has been amazing, this vid and the porche one, being favorites, must be amazing to have these experiences!
Just watched this on the go and it was amazing.

This was FANTASTIC Paul!!! I'm so glad you got to do this. I'll have to add this to my bucket list when I'm finally able to bring my wife to the UK!
My son saw the intro and went mental. "WOW SQUIRREL DOESN'T JUST DO TRAINSIM"
This is fantastic. I watched it on my oculus go. To see the loco straight ahead whilst being able to turn and watch the commentator worked really well. Well done👍
Blimin brilliant.

There's a dream come true right there 👍
it is impossible to dislike this video
Fantastic Squirrel. Wish this tech was available when I mad my cab footage vids. Truly awesome, thanks for sharing. Subscribed
The graphics are epic in the new sims. Fair play to you for having a go at driving a real loco. Wont be king before your driving an hgv for reals
Brilliant video squirrel mate well done
Absolutely brilliant video thank you 🙏
Wow that’s really cool! well done!
wow! VR !!! I need to get a headset!!!
This is fantastic

Cool, looks like fun.
Oh this was awesome to see
Great locos to drive. All the controls at your fingertips and a nice chair. Only issue was they were draughty.
Fantastic video Paul!
Another great video, well done!
My Dad was the booking clerk at Ongar in the 60's. Lived in Fyfield and rode a scooter to work no matter the weather.
Absolutely awesome
Awesome video, I really enjoyed it.
Very nice experience!
Well done, Squirrel!
Class 20 double headers, lubbly jubbly! I also spied a class 31, 33 and a 45 'Peak' at North Weald, if I'm not mistaken.
When I first realized you could move the camera I was amazed. Then when it was pretty blurry image quality I was disappointed. Then when I saw it can be raised up to 1440p I was again amazed
Cool! Thanks!
Beautiful sound ❤
Fabulous! You lucky lucky boy!
Awesome video! Very classy train!
Well Squirell that was a brilliant video. Although I live in North Yorkshire, I am really tempted to go on a driver experience day like you did. Many thanks for a truly great upload!
I used to be a volunteer at Epping Ongar Railway, but haven't got a chance to drive one these locomotives there!
