    That shot of Elizabeth's silhouette standing atop the cliff with the sea breeze majestically blowing her nightgown behind her while the waves crash into the depths is possibly the most capturing shot in all of cinema, in my opinion.
    I feel like in that moment, she wasn't just a queen or of any noble title. She regressed to just a normal woman standing proud on her home soil. She probably didn't know what she was planning to see when she walked out there, but she knew that whatever the outcome may be, she wanted to have one last prideful, standing moment as an Englishwoman fighting for her country.
    So humble, yet so fierce!!!

    • @HalstenSnowborn
      @HalstenSnowborn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      ca mo I doubt that they gave him dark hair and dark eyes to make him look more sinister, they likely just wanted to make him look more like the typical Spanish person.
      When thinking of a Spanish King, people generally wouldn't imagine a blond haired, blue eyed man. Making him look more like the typical Spanish man of the day avoided unnecessary confusion, as people might have though he was supposed to be Scandinavian, English or German if he was made to be blond and blue eyed in the film.

    • @HalstenSnowborn
      @HalstenSnowborn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      ***** I really don't see it, the Middle Eastern thing.
      He has dark hair and olive skin. Like the Italians, the Greeks, the Turks, the Portuguese, pretty much anyone living on the Mediterranean.
      And guess what? Spain is on the Mediterranean. And its people tend to be dark haired and olive skinned, or at least more tanned than the average northern or central European.
      And the movie reflected that in Philip's appearance.

    • @HalstenSnowborn
      @HalstenSnowborn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** That's Hollywood for you man. It's the nature of the beast.
      Look up "The Patriot", that trashy film Mel Gibson starred in. I could say many things about its portrayal of the British.
      Sadly that's Hollywood though.
      Movies are hardly known for amazing historical accuracy.

    Great movie! I hope that someday a film will be made about Edward VI. The boy king who weathered so much court intrigue in the wake of his larger-than-life father Henry VIII only to die at the age of 16. Perhaps not enough drama in his short 6 year reign to attract a film maker.

      Jane Grey 😢 he named poor Jane as his successor. Def a lot of drama potential. There was a show on ‘crave/starz’ recently called ‘becoming elizabeth’. It was cancelled & I personally couldn’t stand the acting for either Jane or Elizabeth. But my god, it def could have gone places with a recasting/reboot focusing on the transition from Edward -> Lady Jane (9 day Queen) -> Mary. One thing I really did love about it was the emphasis it placed on how all 3 of king henry’s children differed so ‘drastically’ in religious beliefs (especially Edward). I liked the focus on assassination attempts/backroom politics too.

      The Royal Navy was defeated multiple times by the Spanish Navy, but History omits it.
      Francis Drake, was defeated in Veracruz in the battle of San Juan de Ulua in 1568.
      The Invincible English, invasion fleet sent by Isabel I to defeat to the Spanish navy, was defeated by Spain and its navy in 1589.
      Edward Vernon was defeated in Cartagenas De Indias by Blas de Lezo in 1741.
      Horacio Nelson, the great victor of Trafalgar, was defeated in Tenerife, Spain, 25 of July of 1797.

      Unlikely. Phillip was also king of Portugal and The Netherlands and had them along their possesions at the time. The portuguese keep talking Portuguese and the dutch keep talking dutch today, right? The most likely thing would have been that the Habsbourgs would have installed a new king of their line, who would´ve have sworn loyalty to the King of Spain and the Pope.
      Surely, as happened with the others, you would have gained independence down the line. Probably Spain with this advantage would´ve taken more possessions from you (or not, the most valuable ones were in the Caribean).
      You would´ve have been re-converted to Catholism for sure, with Spanish Inquisition package included. But you would´ve kept English as your language.

    Ironically, in the end this war was a kind of victory from Spain, with the Treaty of London 1604. The reason being, the English had to renounce to piracy and privateering and open its ports to Spain. But no territorial losses.

    The english never comment of their own Armada, that ended in disaster, or how they call it, the Portuguese Expedition:

    Sir Francis Drake, a hero after the Spanish Armada defeat, turned himself infamous because of his own failure agaist the Spanish in Galicia and Portugal, losing many troops and ships. He tried to restore his fame by attacking Spanish possesions in the Caribean and Americas, and after failing, he died of dissentery. Poor bastard.

      The 2nd part is true. Typhus broke out in the ships who fought the Armada but Elizabeth's government refused the sailors to set feet on land, falsely stating that the Duke of Parma was planning to attack England from the Nederlands (where he was actually crushing the Dutch Revolt at that time). The government also with-held the sailors' payment because they knew that by enforcing this unethical quarantine, they would have to pay significantly less if they waited for a few days. As a result, around 3000-7000 sailors succumbed to death due to either starvation or lack of medical treatment. Whatever little was spent was paid for not by the government, but personally by the the Lord High Admiral Charles Howard, Earl of Nottingham who was one of the naval commanders present in the ships.
