      Should have never allowed "new math" into public schools in the 1960s... I find great joy in tutoring math students (gr. 3&5) since the teacher told me to "forget the book, teach it the way you know it." Multiplication and division of decimal numbers goes from, "I don't understand this!" and after five minutes, to their eyes lighting up with "I get this now!" I always encourage them to "practice this at home, too."

      I got the Huss and Dalton right, also mixed up the Orangewood and the Martin. I now want an Orangewood. I sent one to my son, and I want him to send it to me if he isn’t going to use it.

      Me toooo, the martin was so bright and direct, I normally associate that with cheaper guitars, with solid spruce tops and rosewood back and sides, and thay's probably the reason.

      I just re found this comment and wanted to add Huss And Dalton is now my favorite guitar company. My best friend died in a car wreck and his main guitar was a custom Huss and Dalton. Mark Dalton had a replica made and gave it to the family for free so they could raffle it off to help with funeral expenses. It raised 8000$ for them. Mark personally invited me to tour the factory and that he would show me around personally. Amazing man and amazing company. Much love ❤️ ❤️❤️

    Got them all right. But that’s because I own a D45 and a orange wood so I can tell right away between the two other one just fell into place after those two. Awesome video though. OW is a serious contender with mid level acoustics. They are just going to continue getting better and that price is going to go up so people need to grab them while they can at this low price point.

    My favorite sounding guitars, in order were:
    Orangewood - bass and balanced
    Huss & Dalton - great bass & boomy
    Martin - a little too brittle
    Probably if the Martin was set up and had a neck reset, it would be different and my ranking would change.
    Really, the orangewood is VERY IMPRESSIVE!
    Hopefully after you do a neck reset on the Martin, you could do this again. I have a feeling the Martin may go to #1.
    Either way, great video and I love all your videos!
    Thanks!

  • @VenancioPortalatin
    @VenancioPortalatin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I had the Huss & Dalton and Martin switched in my guess. My favorite without knowing was the Martin from the get go though. It just had a subtle amount more of balance to my ears. That being said they all sounded really great and I was shocked with how much that Orangewood held its own. I'm sure with a few more years of play the Orangewood will open up a lot and sound even better. Been looking for a good less expensive backup to my main acoustic and this video has made really consider getting an Orangewood. I loved both the Martin & Huss & Dalton as well and if I had that kind of funds I would no doubt pull the trigger either one of them.

  • @Ironworthstriking
    @Ironworthstriking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It really depends on what we mean by "sounding old"
    Torrefied wood definitely changes the sound of acoustic guitars, and I've noticed more volume and responsiveness. Those are definitely two qualities of great old guitars, but in my opinion, the bracing under the hood affects the sound even more than wood choice.

  • @RandellAdams

    I guessed correctly. The Orangewood vs Martin had me really confused though. I only guess correctly because the Martin sounded a bit sweeter, but that Orangewood really punches above it's weight class.

  • @bross63
    @bross63 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I picked them all correctly. There is nothing quite like the round, full tone across the full frequency range of a good, older Martin. The highs are loud but not harsh or brittle like on many guitars. The H&D and Orangewood sound good, especially the Orangewood at that price, and many may prefer their bite in the highs. But to my ears the Martin is the truly magical instrument of the bunch.

      It can somewhat hold its own, but it definitely doesn't have the low end of a Martin, which is very noticeable. I have no doubt they are great guitars especially for the price, but they're not for an acoustic enthusiast. They would be good for a beginning-intermediate player for sure.

    I got them correct, but I was far from certain, although I was most confident that #3 was the Martin...it definately sounded like an old Martin. They all sounded excellent to my ears, but the Orangewood sounded "newer" to me, just a little crisper/tighter. I recently bought the Orangewood Berkeley which I also think sounds and plays excellent. Great comparison.

      That was my exact take as well. I didn't want to post that I thought the Martin sounded the worst after i found out 3 was the Martin. This was very interesting to me because depending which genre of music you were playing, I went back and forth between the Hudson and Huss, but the Martin was the least attractive sounding to me in every case, which was surprising. I have requested an Austen from Orangewood to review as I focus on the $180-$250 segment. Liked and subbed. Good job.

    I nailed the Martin for its distinct mellow tone. I couldn't hear a difference between the H+D and the Hudson. I am currently Guitar Hunting in that $600 dollar domain. Lots of great guitars, but none available to play before making the purchase. I never like to make a return. I'd rather make a hands on choice. Thanks Again Jeremy Great as usual.

    Before watching this video, I placed an order for the Orangewood Hudson today, and I'm looking forward to receiving it. Having said that, the Huss and Dalton was by far my favorite, and the one I would buy if I had the money. The Martin came in second, and the Orangewood last. But the fact is that the other guitars are over 5x or 7x the price of the Orangewood, so I'm still happy I placed the order and looking forward to playing it.

    I got all 3 right... but the Orangewood Hudson still sounds great given the difference in price point (it's 10x cheaper, it's not exactly a fair comparison). Your Martin sounds amazing but I also noticed it needs a setup. There are plenty of Martin D41 from 1970 and 1971 out there, I don't think it"s a collectible, why don't you get it set up properly? I was actually a bit disappointed that the Huss and Dalton didn't overpower the other 2, I would have expected it to be even better than the Martin. What was the string situation? Did the H&D have dull strings? Very nice video to give a fair shot to all 3 guitars.

    Funny thing is I flipped the H&D with the Hudson. Figured the buzzy notes were fret or neck issues with the old Martin. Totally impressed by the Orangewood. I have tried the masterbilt Epiphones in the past and thought the orangewood would have the same all solid wood but still no bass issues. Not here. That Hudson had plenty of bass. Now the interesting question one how will the terrified top age??? I might not be here to find out. Gettin old.

    Honestly I chose the third Guitar on all 4 videos , because it had low-end - mid - top end tones well balanced & a warm nice tone which I very much like. I don’t think I can afford a 1970’s Martin . That now put me back right on square one, on my hunt for a 6 string . My mind was first set on a used Gibson, then I watched a video Rhett Shull choosing a used H&D with a great tone so I was looking for a used Huss & Dalton torrefied one. Thanks for a great video, Onward & upwards for me then.🙄

    I wasn't trying to guess which guitar was which but was picking the best sounding guitar. To my taste, I chose 2, 3, and 1 in order of my most liked guitar sound. "WHAT!!" #2 was the Orangewood, of which I have but of a different Orangewood model! To me, the Orangewood here sounded livelier and clearly had more tones on the full spectrum. I guess I made a good purchase with my Orangewood 🙂

  • @szabolcskiraly6323

    Hi Jeremy, the H&D souded suprisingly somehow "dusty" but very nice and rounded, the Hudson was loud and clear, open and wide and chimey with lots of open highs and mids like tiny-little bells, sounds modern and expensive (!), but not "old", your D-41 was unmistakably strong, powerful, detailed and everything I like and deeply appreciate, maybe the cracks, maybe the time, who knows... my absolute favourite, hands down, but I' m a blues-rock man - now I know what I want to buy, thx. I'm 47 tomorrow, and my ears are older as well, I think one can try, but can't cheat: "Aging" needs the Time. I'd send you the price of that "your favourite" Hudson, so you can pass me that Martin any time 😁 By the way, what You and Mike have done to Raymond and Joshua was absolutely incredible, one of the most amazing things me and my wife have seen in the guitar-community since like...... years, big kudos to both of you, guys 🤠👍🏻God bless you all, keep on playing and posting!!

    i had the D41 correct as number 3. Depending on what you were playing, I mixed up the H and D and Orangewood. Switching to headphones i got the H and D correct.

    The fret buzz on number 3 gave it away to me. Orangewood 2 martin 3 and that first one sounded crappy to me compared to the other 2

    I thought The Hus was one . That guitar sounds awesome love it. But the Hudson sounds dang good to. Thanks great video Jeremy.

    Very surprised by Orangewood! Thought it was the Martin.
    My favorites in order were 1,2,3

    Got the Martin right. I could tell right away that it didn't have the mahogany mid. Got the orangewood and H & D mixed.

    I picked the Martin. But I got the Huss and Dalton and the Orangewood mixed up. In some ways I preferred the orange wood because it was a little tighter - ie. very clear still with not as much stuff ringing and messing up the clarity. Great guitar, I must look at them.
    Any chance of looking at torrefied Eastman E10s and E20s?

    I've been thinking about ordering an Oliver Jr from Orangewood what do you think of their mahogany guitars they certainly are reasonably priced however they're constantly out of stock

    Got the Martin right, I swapped the H&D and the Orangewood, but that makes it seem like the Orangewood did exactly what it was supposed to with the artificial top aging.

    I immediately tagged guitar #2 as the Orangewood. It was like the volume and tone was turned down a notch switching from the H&D to the Orangewood. I had a harder time distinguishing between the H&D and the Martin. I own an Orangewood Echo so I'm not a hater but more of a realist. You get what you pay for, yes, but you can also pay a little too much for what you're getting.

    I didn't try to pick which was which, but my order of preference was 3, then 2, then 1. All good sounding acoustics, though. I don't usually go in for torrefaction, but I'm always open to changing my mind.

    The H&D sounds just like my Martin HD28hd to my ear. I did get the Martin and H&D reversed though.

    Huss and Dalton was best for me, but Orangewood was a close second. Some of the highs were a bit too piercing for me, but I imagine that would mellow with time.

    I got the Huss and Dalton right, but I was shocked to find out #2 was the Orangewood.. I really didn't like the sound of the Martin, it's quite muted.

    I had the Orangewood right but mixed up the Huss & Dalton and the Martin.

    I got the Orangewood number 2 right had the other 2 round the wrong way.
    On the Orangewood the high E and B strings gave it away, the action could be a bit higher at the nut, couple of notes you played did not ring out right.
    But still a fantastic sounding guitar for the price nice bass,

    Enjoy what you do, JS, but by having the Martin in the mix you minimized the perceived differences between the other two guitars. And yeah, even over my laptop speakers I was able to pick them out.

    I swapped 1 and 3... to me the 1st on sounded fuller, but I think minor variation in mic position might play a role. It'd be fun to hear a guitar that was entirely (synthetically) aged... my father always told me it was the repeated vibrations from the strings, over decades, which makes the wood conform to certain resonances.

    I got it wrong. All I said to my self that guitar # 3 sounded really good. So I noticed some difference. But I thought it was the Huss and Dolton, I thought # 1 was the Martin. I have not owned any of the 3. But I thought I had the Martin tone down. The Huss & Dolton sounds very Martinesque.
