Did you just assume that guitars gender, Mary? For shame. 😂 $225 Seems cheap for that tbf.. But i thought it might be a semi.
she singing about the chad that broke her heart lol
@@r-ratedstudios3847 I thought Mary was into other females.
@@put-in2609 Thought so too, not important of course (well, to her im sure it is) but she is gorgeous and really talented, alas it is stacy not chad this time. 😔
I appreciate the honesty coming from a singer-songwriter who was not being sponsored, but who realistically has different expectations of those two guitars. They sound DIFFERENT. That's super helpful. I can see many people being encouraged to either really appreciate what they own, or are not intimidated to write and record because their guitar isnt a $3500.00 model. I love these " inside the life of a musician" type videos. You're talking to two different audiences at once and both are incredibly meaningful and helpful.
I've lost enough hearing to notice much difference at all, maybe a more resolute bottom end on the Martin but the same sound still. Diminished hearing could be a real money saver.
As soon as Mary started singing, I forgot that there were 2 different guitars.
Wait!!! There’s a guitars?
Yes. Some of us need a better guitar to hide behind if we are going to use our voice.
Haha exactly. I just forgot she was comparing guitars doing a review. Best
@@benjipathfinder7962Wait!!! Mary was singing?!
Bought a lefty Orangewood about a year ago. About 200 USD. Solid, no frills, sounds darn good.
Brilliant playing, singing, songwriting, story telling, and editing. Seems there’s no limit to what you do well.
“Six Thousand Miles” is brilliant. I kind of heard those two guitars as complimentary, not competitive, in that tune, a woody thump in the Orangewood and a kind of crystalline yet smokey bourbon refinement from the Martin. Fantastic!
Loved your song. Loved your honest comparison.
I've been playing guitar "unprofessionally" for 64 years. I veered into medicine instead of music for a profession.
At 74 I'm retiring from medicine and veering back into music - primarily guitar.
I've purchased high end and inexpensive guitars over the years. I still play both.
I learned to play on a chunk of wood with strings but my second guitar let me "feel" the music reverbrating through the guitars body into my body. That emotional link inspired me to continue.
I doubt you could have written your marvelous new song on the orangewood ( You'll tell me if you think I'm wrong) but I absolutely see it's terrific value as a beginner guitar and later as a travel ax.
Like people, every guitar has it's own personality. Search for one(s) that compliment yours.
Welcome back, Mate!
I am totally impressed with "6000 miles" The Martin definitely has a brighter sound But, the cheaper one sounds good for the money. Thanks for the demonstration, Mary.
Beautifully made video Mary thank you. First off, great comparison, rhe little orangewood sounded fantastic as did the Martin as expected. Secondly really nice song thanks 😊
Your videos are so well made Mary! The editing, the sound and the video quality are all top notch. Not to mention your amazing guitar skills. Cannot wait to hear the new album. Great work Mary 👏
Nothing wrong with the Orangewood, especially for that affordable price! I have owned my OM-28V since new in 2002. I can hear the differences. The Martin has a fuller sound with warmth and deeper lows. I was expecting the Orangewood to have the warmth because of the mahogany, but I was wrong. It's a good comparison, due to similar body style and size. Great video!
I bought an orangewood Mahogany in may of 2022 based on your recommendation. It arrived with no problems and with good intonation. The factory strings did tarnish a little after 1 year. But I think that is normal for all strings with my hands. The finish on my guitar is not one hundred percent perfect, There are some imperfections in the matte Clear coat where the neck meets the body. But I do not mind at all for the price. The guitar still looks stunning to me. And the finish has held up very well. I am most impressed with the tuners. I was worried about them, but they still hold a tune better than any other acoustic that I have had. I have never had an expensive acoustic guitar. I have had some japanese made acoustic electrics, but this is my first all acoustic. I am in my 30s and have play guitar since I was 11. And I can recommend the orange wood oliver mahogany. I have been extremely impressed with it. Especially for its price. The case it comes with, it's nice also.
I used your code. Mary's friends ten I don't know if it's still active but it worked for me in 2022.
Amazing timing in your playing Mary, very professional level video, song and comparison. You keep getting better in leaps and bounds, thanks for all you do 😻
Lovely song. Much appreciated. For me, the Martin is brighter, livelier. It competes with your voice for attention. The Orangewood has a more blended, harmonious, 'melted into the background' sound. If I had a superb voice, I would probably prefer the cheaper guitar. If I was a less serious singer and the focus was on my guitar work, then the Martin would be for choice.
Cool video, Mary! I had seen the vid in 2019 too and it's nice to revisit the Orangewood and compare it to your Martin. I love OM models and the warm cosy sound of Mahogany 🤗. Your Martin is clearly more resonant and fuller sounding, but I listen with pleasure to you playing the Orangewood, too 😊👍.
Have a nice rest of your day 😘
The Orangewood sounds really good, the Martin sounds better. But not $3500 worth better! If I was comparing these looking to buy one or the other, the Orangewood wins hands down! I had a similar experience comparing a Washburn acoustic to a Taylor. I ended up buying the Washburn. Actually TWO Washburn guitars, a 6 string and a 12 string, for less than the price of one Taylor 6 string. That was around 20 years ago and I still own and play both of the Washburn guitars!
Nothing wrong with inexpensive guitars… Seagull models are wildly popular.
I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to have the same life span or take the same intense use as a Taylor, Gibson, Collings, Santa Cruz… But you never know.
Exactly, the Martin sounds a bit better (subjective); it does not sound $3k better. I'd definitely buy the Orangewood and think I got good value in the purchase.
I agree. I think the Orangewood sounds great for a guitar that costs a little over $200. It's agreed the Martin sounds better, but like you said is it $3500 better?
when you go expensive value is out the door, spend tons more for better. like a honda 25k or porsche 125k. typically high end has a reason folks are willing to spend big money. at a certain point it takes tons more money for minor improvement. like making a really fast car even faster
You’re getting more than just better sound when It comes to a martin though. Not saying that orange-wood guitars are bad but I’ve played both and id pick a Martin any day.
Marvelous playing. A really nice objective comparison and advice on the guitars. Love how your mastery of the separate styles of voice enhances your songs. Great stuff.
Thank you Mary. Both for the comparison/contrast between the guitars with your honest thoughts and more so for the song.
Nice guitars, great playing ! Both guitars projected your tone well, and the mic is capturing it great.
Great song, performance, and comparative break down! Much respect! 👏👏👏
Very informative comparison! I so enjoy your playing style. The guitars sound much closer than I would’ve expected. I very much enjoyed this video. ❤
I bought the Orangewood Mahogany because that's what you're using in the beginning guitar class I purchased from you. I love the guitar and your class! Thanks Mary!
Always amazing
Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ 😊
Brilliant video with subtle but informative cues to what you were doing. Also, the new song is really good…very nice retelling of a very familiar story. Thanks!
@MarySpender, great video. I really loved your editing a lot.
I prefer the clarity of the Martin, but I like Orangewood too.
Fantastic video! The perfect way to do an instrument-to-instrument comparison. And what a song! I love it.
Nice video Mary (and great song BTW!), thanks for the comparison and your thoughts about both guitars.
Wow Mary! Just freakin' WOW! I've seen every video your name is on and that was the best performance(s), of the best song, you've ever shared. It's brilliant. This song will be a huge hit. I'd love to hear these two recordings complete and can't wait to hear everything else you do with it. 6000 Miles is my new favorite song.
This the best review I’ve seen in a long time. You are the greatest. ❤
great job mary ,and wow your finger style is top notch
Mary, I really liked this video, one of the best comparison videos I've seen. The Martin definitely had a fuller sound, but the Orangewood sounded great for a $279 guitar. The length of play is so important, but not mentioned in any other videos I've seen comparing guitars. Great job as always.
Its difficult to catch all of the intangibles in a 13 min video...however the Martin did obviously sound fuller/richer/warmer. Also your vocals were being picked up a tiny bit in the Martin pickup (i believe) which gave another color. For those who can afford it, the Martin (or similar) would be the choice. However the absolute beauty of this video was showing that a very attainable, quality instrument performs exceedingly well and sounds "comparable" in playing and recording. Beautifully done video and love the new song!!
Excellent comparison, Mary! I completely enjoyed it.❤
The Martin sounds so good and had a noticeably warmer "thump" when you hit the bridge. I really enjoyed the Orangewood, nice guitar at a very reasonable price. Playing was very enjoyable and top notch as always.
Excellent content as always Mary. An interesting conundrum you pose too - is the higher end instrument always better? Perhaps it should always be so but makers like Orangewood [and no doubt a bucket load more] do produce great instruments for varied markets and good on them for doing so.
And... wowser, brilliant new song too! Keep on keeping on m'lady
You made a great video as always. Excellent analysis. Love your playing style. It is uniquely you.
Love the song! The subject reminds me of Transatlanticism by Death Cab which is one of my favorite songs. Crazy how even on studio monitors, you couldn't really tell when the guitars changed unless you were really listening to it! I'm sure the room and mics help a bit with that as well. Great video!
Using a mahogany top on a more cheaply made guitar is honestly a bit of a genius move. The natural compression of the hardwood balances a sound that could otherwise be warped by cut corners in other places,- not saying that is the case here, but the results speak for themselves. I'm impressed, and it looks gorgeous.
Enjoy your video very much, thank you.. I've got to say the quality of the song overshadowed the guitar comparison. Great stuff 👍
Really well made and interesting video. I have a Cole Clark that I absolutely love. Recently, in order to have a guitar when I am in the UK, I purchased a Tanglewood Crossroads. Totally different price points but I thoroughly enjoyed almost three weeks exclusively playing the Tanglewood and managed to write a couple of songs on it. Will record them next time in the UK.
What a great experiment. It would be interesting to hear them layered. The song is absolutely amazing!! Well Done!!!!
Very cool, on both musical and personal levels. Great job. Thank you.
I had an Orangewood Mason Live that I purchased as a backup instrument. I played the Orangewood on many gigs and really appreciated the playability and feel. I recently sold it to a friend as a step-up guitar for her and she is enjoying it a lot. Thanks for both of your Orangewood reviews! My primary guitar is a Takamine G series, and I now have a Furch Yellow that is truly amazing. Thank you for ALL of the videos! From the mountains of Western North Carolina, USA.
Love your openess and honesty, love the vids- nice song here, keep on writing- and we all hope LA is working out for you-
I've had a D-35 for 2 years now and it is love...However, for years before I could afford that, I have played
a DCX1E ( of the made in Mexico Martins) - marginally affordable at $700 or so, the neck and sound are excellent- these are made using more laminates, which have tremendous stability over time, but are not made completely of the traditional hard wood.
Mary does the best, yes the very best guitar comparisons.
Her visual audial video techniques are top notch.
Helped me chose my electric guitar. Just ordered this Oliver now. Thank you Mary.😎👍
Great song Mary as always you are only getting better and better as a communicator and songwriter. Honestly I like the Mahogany vibe for this song but the projection and thump of the Martin is undeniably more sonically appealing. I could see you rocking a 00 mahogany Martin easily as a second axe with some sonic variation. Anyways cheers!
This is brilliant. Context is everything. I actually think the Orangewood probably works a little better in a singer-songwriter context since it has much fewer overtones.
Mary, you are SO GOOD! :) Through headphones, the Martin is definitely fuller, richer and so much more resonant... felt like it was projecting gently shimmering "audio snowflakes" that floated around the width of my sonic spectrum. The Orangewood had a narrower, thinner sound by comparison. On its own, it would be more than serviceable in any situation, but if you want that extra special sonic sauce (and have a pocket deep enough), it's clearly the Martin. Thanks for assembling this video!
Bravo Mary! This was absolutely beautiful, specially that new song of yours. You make both instrument sound great, that speaks volume about the quality of your playing. Thanks and if by any chance you come across the ocean and visit Atlantic Canada it would be fantastic to see you perform.🎶🎶🎶🤓
I've watched a lot of tese comparison videos, and your method of presenting it was excellent. Good song too.
Very nice song Mary - the Orangewood sounds bright - I quite liked it. And the Martin ? Like a warm cozy blanket, just as one would expect.
Thanks for your work in putting together this video. I will probably never own a Martin or Taylor of other high end guitar, but I do love my Ibanez concert solid top mahogany (very much like your Orangewood) and my Orangewood Rey S. I'm an open mic and home player and with a good set of strings, both of these guitars sound perfect for me. Thanks again Mary, well done!
Super CoooL! Very informative, insightful comparison and a lovely song... Thank you Mary
When I visited the Martin plant, I did not want to leave. The place is intoxicating.
I've been thinking about expensive/cheap guitars, really enjoyed your video. That being said, I was moved by your song and performance enough I'll have to play it again and try to pay attention to the sound of the guitars. And I'm looking forward to it!
Glad I stayed around long enough for your song- a gem!
I have an Oliver of my own. I love how mellow the tone is. But, the mid-tones really shine on your Martin.
Oh My, you've got me shopping Guitars and Guitar tones again. Your comparison, I like them both. The Orangewood thru your Mic picks up the low Bass tone likely not heard so much in studio. The D28, always sounds well balanced, but a Price only an accomplished Musician can afford. Personally, I tend to look for close sounding Guitar alternatives vs the 'High Dollar' Acoustics because due to my luck, my Guitars are likely to get stolen or stepped on by my un-appreciative audience. it's a Fun Journey, shopping for a new Guitar, (especially comparing Acoustic Guitars in the stores, closed in glass, control booth's and swapping out the Guitars with my favorite own song creations). The drawback is , it's quite time consuming no doubt and finding someone to suffer through the experience with me is a miracle. Love your Voice and your Music, Big Luck going forward. And Folks, Support these Artists, Creativity, it really is Hard but enjoyable Work!
Great song Mary, love it.
I could go with either guitar.
Very enjoyable comparison, listening on my ear buds, the Martin was fuller on both the low and top end and just had more presence. 15x better? No. But to a certain extent, you get what you pay for.
I love Mary from the future and the insights to the process. Appreciate your efforts to expand my understanding. I still think talent might have a role to play as well.
Well, done! Most reviews/demos are only new products. My Morgan sounded pretty lack luster out of the box. But after a couple months, it really bloomed and sounds great! Comparing the Martin and Orangewood within context was great! There is a need for players to have both "precious" and not as "precious" instruments. There's no need for snobbery and much need for practicality. Again, well done, Mary!
you put orangewood on my radar and I eventually got an Oliver mahogany junior and a Brooklyn junior live (since discontinued). I LOVE the Oliver mahogany junior. just a perfect cuddle guitar. I can play so fast on it. the Brooklyn junior live is a beauty -- I hope they offer another junior like that some day. I didn't think orangewood would live up to the hype but it did. not that I'd turn down a Martin :)
Love the song “6000 miles”. I’ve been playing Martin Acoustics as my primary for 50 + years so I never think anything sounds like a Martin. I am always looking for a lower end guitar as my secondary. Definitely will try out the “Orangewoods” if I can.
Great song and playing!
Thanks for the comparison and your philosophy about cheap vs expensive. My main squeeze is an Art & Lutherie made in 2004 in Quebec purchased at a pawn shop. I'm not a performer but I have tried Taylor and Martin. They are great but my Quebecois guitar with a cedar top, laminated cherry back and sides is just fine.
You are very talented, your voice is fantastic .
Great Job! Another "well done" You put so much hard work in here... take care of yourself.
Your voice has perfect intonation and groove
Greatness. Wonderful player and singer. Sounds really good on either instrument as best as I can tell thru the iPhone speaker.
Nice! I think they would work great paired on a track, as the Orangewood seems to cut a little bit more and the Martin is fuller and warmer.
Great Song!!! Yes the different guitars doesn't matter to much, but I like the warmer Martin better, as well in song context
Orangewood might be my next acoustic guitar. Having seen the collector and high-end market craziness, I've settled on a philosophy to get the most guitar for the least money. If I ever do get a Martin, it will probably be a D-15 Streetmaster. Your playing and singing is incredibly consistent to be able to swap back and forth the way you did in the demo. Great review.
50 years ago I wanted a Martin but the cost was just too high for a 22 year old at the time. The Martin at the time was around $800.
I tried an Ovation which had a beautiful full, Rich sound. It was also almost $400 less. I bought the Ovation and still have it and it still sounds great. However I often wish I could've afforded that beautiful Martin. The Martin would have aged gracefully as would have the sound. Of course the Martin would now be worth a pretty penny.
I don't regret buying the Ovation but I wish like hell that I could've found the money for the Martin.
Thanks for the video Mary. I love the comparison of the two guitars and your final thoughts on the two.
I remember your previous orangewood video. It was the reason why i bought a orangewood model in 2020. I was able to send it from the US to Chile, i wonder if someone else have one here.
Thank you for the recommendation :3
That guitar was a real companion during the pandemic.
This is a great video, I'm 59 y.o. keyboard player who picked up guitar about 4 years ago and I have an Orangewood and absolutely LOVE it. The Mahogany Rey was less than $200 and my guitar player friends also dig it.
Thanks for your content as always.
loveandpeace.
Your song is great! Your guitar technique is truly your own and as a player for over 60 years is quite impressive! Both guitars sound so good it is obviously the artist that makes it so. Wonderful voice, as well.
Already have the finger style course... but.... I LOVE this comparison!!! This was well thought out, well demonstrated, and a fair side by side for these two guitars. Thank you! (all comes down to " is one guitar worth that much more to you for the sound and playability?")
Love your singing, Mary 😊
"It's not the arrows, it's the archer."
I so enjoyed your song and performance!
Great song!! Totally love your style. I’m glad I found you when you played Sultans of Swing with Leo M.😊
Damn, Mary! That new song is a banger! Love it 🤩!
Although I didn't agree with your thoughs on how these guitars sound individually (to my ears, the Martin sounded the brightest and the Orangewood was the warmest), I however 100% agree that in a mix, with vocals over it, it doesn't really matter. That was a cool experiment, great job!
I was here for the comparison but stayed for the playing, great video Mary!
Hello Mary, Thanks For This Video
To my ears the Martin sounds "more alive". It has a broader frequency range and it sound like the "stereo image" is wider and more open. Love the playing!
Great video... lots of fun and I really enjoyed "6000 Miles" and the way you compared the two. I agree with your comments but since you asked for my 2 cents/pence here it is... I don't have your Martin although I wish I did I do have a Taylor 322e ($2,200) vs an Orangewood Sage ($650). Not nearly the same body and style setup as your video but its what I have, nor am I anywhere as good as you are. I picked up the Orangewood in 2019 as my first real guitar and have loved it ever since, putting as many hours on it as my schedule allows. The Taylor is new this year and the first time paying what I thought was an insane amount of money. They sound very different as you said but both are a joy to play. The major difference I have notice is in the fit and finish. The Taylor is just a much better built instrument with the frets feeling almost soft and how the pieces looking like they are melted together. But as you say its very nice to have a guitar I can travel through the airport with without as much worry although I have invested quite a bit of heart into the Orangewood. I don't expect the Orangewood will hold up over the decades like the Taylor should but it will outlast me.
Sounds great with the context you've put the 2 guitars. I might get a Martin in the future. Even tho the cheap one sounds good, expensive guitars normally are more comfortable to play and allow your fingers to play for more time, and since I play for 2hours or more, most of the time, my fingers will thank me 😂. BTW that new song... love it, a lot.
I love the new song!!!! Great job!!!
You're a great inspiration to me ❤
Not to sound mundane but as good videos are your norm, nice video. There is a comprehensive analysis of the Orangewood guitar done by DriftwoodGuitars. He has a TH-cam channel. Driftwood Guitar is a luthier. When reviewing the guitars he actually cuts the guitar in half; then, provides detailed analysis of the type of bracing, woods used for bracing, tonal affect of woods used, thickness of sound board, thickness of clear coat or paint used and on and on. Understanding the process used to make a guitar is helpful. I happen upon the channel while having my morning coffee. Cheers
Your playing is simply second to none! WOW
I REALLY love this song! Just beautiful
I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. I’m comparing the OW Brooklyn live compared to my Taylor 224 LXE Koa. My Taylor is still on top but the OW is a great addition to my collection. Thanks!
❤❤wow closed my eyes and just listened to you play and sing❤❤ simply fantastic. 😊😊
Thank you, that's very interesting. I've been thinking about getting my first acoustic to go with the electrics that I already have. This adds a lot of useful information for me. One thing to note about the difference between a company like Martin that makes everything in-house and a company that outsources some of the manufacture is the potential differences in quality control. Note that this has nothing to do with where the article is made (there are skilled luthiers and woodworkers the world over). Different organizations will necessarily have differences in processes, and there is a greater chance there can be a wider range in the quality of manufacture when a guitar or it's parts are made in multiple location and shipped longer distances. No two guitars are ever going to be identical, of course, and no company makes a perfect guitar every time. What I like about Orangewood is that they are careful to do their own setup and final check before the guitar goes out the door. I think this mitigates potential problems over other companies that rely more on outside organizations to do more of the setup. Of course, not matter what the guitar, the final setup should be done to the player's needs, whether by the player or a qualified luthier.
I will definitely add Orangewood to my options for searching for my next instrument.
💯💯👍
I listened to this with good-quality over-the-ear headphones. What I hear out of the Martin is more sustain and more depth/resonance in the lower registers (strings 4-6). It's not possible to hear a difference in the amount of hand strength needed to play clear notes, but I appreciate your mentioning it at the end of the video.
I wonder how many players would choose the Martin over the Orangewood had they not seen which guitar you were playing.
Almost 30 years in the studio business I heard several brands. Many less expensive acoustics sounded very good.
Yes, and some needed work. As you stated, diminishing returns
i love your stuff mary and the orange wood sounds amazing i have quite a few reasonably priced laminated acoustics and when there amplified and different pedals used they sound awesome you dont have to spend a fortune expensive guitars are for expensive people
3:17 great tune, beautifully played
