  • As a Mavs fan, I'm sad to see Derrick Jones Jr leave the Dallas Mavericks after signing a three-year $30M deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. We were previously led to believe that DJJ would have to wait two weeks before signing a contract due to a change in representation, but that seems to not be the case.

So sad to see him leave the Mavs. He is one of my favorites 😢 hope he thrives on the clippers though

I think DJJ wanted to move to LA…simple as that…fair enough…I’m happy with Marshall and we needed to move on

Yeah he def wanted to leave. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have signed with an LA agency days before free agency

His three point shooting this past season was the best of his career. 34% from three while averaging three attempts per game, compared to one attempt per game the year prior with Chicago. The increase in shooting volume was largely due to Luka and Kyrie drawing attention from the defense and creating open looks for him. I suspect Harden and Kawhi will provide similar opportunities.
Additionally, a great on-ball defender. Typically someone you’d have guard one of the opponent’s star players. And of course the insane alley-oop dunks. Athletic 3&D wing

@@xonrr4017I mean they got Naji Marshall who I think is a better individual player than DJJ, I don’t want to say he was a system player but Luka definitely heavily influenced his game this year, if Luka even has half the influence on Naji Marshall he will be a better player

He was a slam dunk champion, he can alley oop it up. 3's come and go. good defensive rating

I watched the Mavs all year and loved flight 55 like many other Dallas fans. DJJ really blossomed once the trades of gafford and PJ came through, there was a lot less pressure of DJJ playing the stretch 4 which the Mavs attempted to do in the early season. DJJ had some injuries here and there nothing major so that’s good. His highlights of the year came in the playoffs really starting with the Mavs clippers series. DJJ and PJ were predominantly used to attack Harden and PG, and for the most part it worked beautifully. DJJ was used again on SGA and on Ant Edwards. He was also on Tatum and Brown in the finals. DJJ played incredibly well defensively throughout the playoffs seemingly stepping it to another level. His shooting ability is very spotty, he was predominantly asked to hit corner threes and he was amazing at them all year long at 34% average. He’s a high flyer so when he’s in the open court he’s pretty dangerous and that’s why he loved him. At times throughout the year he was getting lob cuts to the rim, just wished he did it more often, I always thought why he didn’t just slot cut to the hoop and attack more instead of stand in the corner. Really showed a weakness of his in the finals, because the Mavs desperately needed movement toward the hoop and just didn’t get it. Overall, we loved his energy, his effort, his defense and his vertical leaping ability. We just picked up Naji Marshal instead and it seems like he may fit even better but time will tell

Look at the length rather than the amount. Teams are making commitments for shorter terms like 2 to 4 years and rarely seeing 5 year contracts.

I think it was probably the role he would have played in Dallas. LA probably offered him a starting role and they made up the difference in state income tax by giving him 3 million more. The guy Dallas got is the better player though. I LIKE DJJ, but he was a bit of an over achiever in Dallas. Something tells me he will disappear back to who he was with the Clippers. At least he got his payday!

I'm glad he got his payday too. Hoping that he continues to play well (except when playing the Mavs) but you might be right about him overperforming this past season.

I’m 99% sure it was DJJs part because he just got the new agent which is why we thought that 15 day thing. I think his new agent wanted to make a bigger splash and Derrick jones jr in the finals and playoffs couldn’t always handle how much of a role we needed him to do.
