Kind of. Speaking as a biased violinist, the first violin part is often much harder and requires more skill. The harmony of an alto can often be harder than the melody of the soprano.

When i was in middle school i was first chair for first violins and my teacher we had an ode to joy arrangement and when my teacher asked me to play second violin part i said this is so different from first violins. And then he goes learn second violin parts you are an advanced player. Then i said i dont know any second violin parts i only know first violin parts. My teacher got MEGA TRIGGERED
Hurrah for your teacher! He knew that playing second violin, playing in a section not as principal (so you learn what it's like to follow), and, if possible, also playing viola all contribute to making you a better concertmaster.

Actually kinda glad I play viola now because we get most of the harmony but also the lower melody, it’s like a good combo of the first and second violins
So after watching this don't know why but was inspired to try playing my violin again after about 14 years of not really touching it...I don't remember anything 😓. Went back to basics and started practicing scales...unsurprisingly that's actually helping. May have a while before I get back to a playable level though. 😅
