Yeah, they eat the thistle seeds and then crap them out. So the seeds are wrapped in fertiliser and can flourish

Hi Rob, any concerns about the amount of forage you are wasting and how do you keep on top of the PH?

Not worried about what we left as it rots down into the soil adding organic matter in increasing speed of regrowth. The extra organic matter also stabilises PH.

What about the quality of food they are eating, is it that after the leaf has seeded, does its quality deteriorate and loses its nutrients as we are told when rotational grazing to a certain height?

+giz jones It changes. I find that growing bullocks and suckler cows do very well. There is extra starch and slightly less protein. However, we are sold a dud on protein levels and much of what is measured as "protein" is actual just non protein nitrogen rather than digestible protein and actually does harm to rumination. You don't need more than 14 % anyway. I have a friend who does this with dairy cows and uses legume mixes which keeps quality up if you need it.

Do you think this could work anywhere in the Uk, I've have looked at the possibility, but unsure due to us being north facing farm in North Wales where we get a serious amount of rainfall, and growth is late and slower

+giz jones You could definitely do it there. If you have a shorter growing season then this will extend the time your stock spend outside in winter. If done right it should also bring growth forward in the spring and later in the winter as the soil temp is kept higher with the litter layer and more soil life should also extend the season.
