  • Here is Part 3 of Tullian's new series “Scandalous Freedom”. This message is called “Favored and Free".
What does Jesus mean when he says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”? It may be something very different than what you think.
    Matthew 16:24

Amen! Philippians 3:4-9 Paul had to lose his self righteous life to receive God's righteousness by faith

Too, it's our self-righteousness. Our GOOD works need the covering of the blood of Jesus.

Never heard these ideas expressed in this way. Truly profound and counterintuitive to the way most theologians approach the subject. Im so thankful for your unique way of framing Biblical concepts. Scandalous freedom is the perfect title for this series. Love it.

I think his explanation is unclear re. how God's grace sets regenerated people free to be themselves, authentic, etc. God seeks to change (sanctify) our CHARACTER, not our PERSONALITY. Character is moral, personality is amoral. God calls us to repent, not of personality traits, but of character traits. So artists remain artists, gregarious people gregarious, etc.
This ties in to foreign missions. We don't call people in other countries to repent of their culture, but of their sin -- and to put faith in Christ to cover their sin and become their righteousness. We don't call them to "put on a suit and tie". We call them to "put on the Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 13:14).
