We caught a SHARK! 🦈 Handline FISHING New Zealand 🇳🇿 with Venetian Pros! 197 Countries, 3 Kids

  • Join us as we go fishing 🎣 in New Zealand’s breathtaking Marlborough Sounds!
It was truly an epic day fishing alongside two Venetian brothers from Rovigno - Gino and Piero. Hearing them talk Italian to each other made us feel like we were having an adventure in the Mediterranean even though we set sail from Picton.
We hadn’t even left the marina, and we were already fishing for bait! Forget about rods and nets, we were handlining with pros. Who would have known that authentic fishing can be so much fun?
Chantal found a book on board with all the different species that lived in the Marlborough Sounds and we learned more about the types of fish we could catch.
We were absolutely amazed by how successful we were. We even caught some little sharks, but of course, we returned them in the water.
It turned out to be such a fantastic adventure. We had fun, we learned a bit about authentic traditional fishing and, as a bonus, we even saw some cute seals.
We also learned about the turbulent history of Rovinj Croatia, the hometown of our two kind ‘fishing instructors’ and the double meaning behind their boat’s name, Scoglionato.
More than satisfied, we ended the day with a delicious meal - fish fry, homemade tartar sauce, baked carrots and potatoes, and an apple pie made by our hard-working girls.
    Enjoy the video!!!

Wow... Totally enjoyed this one. I grew up on the ocean with fishing lines. No rods! Couldn't afford one. But you revived some fond memories of my childhood fishing the Bay Of Islands in a tin boat. Thanks for sharing.

Shark is often sold in NZ as Rig. When bought at the local Fish n Chip shop it's colloquially known as Shark and Tatties. Blue Cod is the best though.

Did you guys just put whipped cream on mashed potatoes ? I was totally enjoying your day out video, the fish and chips with baked veges looked so yummie. The cream stopped me in my tracks ... nah that can't be cream ... you don't put cream on a main fish meal. Please let me know if that is a thing, I just might try it on my girls.

Fishing is a great way to relax, unwind and provide for meals. Often went surf casting with my dad as a girl, or out in dinghy. Most unusual catch was a baby hammerhead shark in the bay of islands

It looks like you had a great day out. We did something similar while visiting some of my husbands family on the Chatham Islands. We caught so many Groper and Blue Cod on our rope handline. Great memories. I wouldn't touch the bait either and my Father in law spent most of the time on the boat taking my fish off the hooks. 😁😅

My hubby and I go surf casting whenever we can, the buzz when you hook up is awesome, heaps of yahoo's, woohoos but when ya lose ya fish or ya line snaps 🤭 that's the story of the big one that got away 😂
Funny, as much as I love fishing I won't touch the bait either, Chantal I'm with you on that 👍🏽 my hubby taught me to fillet, I love fresh fish crumbed with panko bread crumb, first cover your fillet in egg then your flour and the crumb, deep fry and have with salad topped with your fav dressing.. Yum! Trust me you'll love it, oh and leave your crumbed fish in the fridge for about an hour before cooking, that'll stop the crumb coating coming off and stay intact and a bad days fishing is better then a good day at work, my hubby always says that 😁

Hey, great video!!! Really loved this vlog 😀😀😀 In India, the situation is terrible. Covid 19 was there, now Black Fungus (mucormycosis) has also joined the party for killing people. Another bad news is that a cyclone named " Yass" is charging into my state. Don't know what will happen. The most important thing at this moment is to stay alive and healthy. I am trying to stay positive by watching cricket, Web series and movies and also doing my online studies. Hope, this time will also pass by and all things will go back to normal. Have a nice day guys 😊😊 STAY SAFE ❤ ❤

Did your 2 guides tell their story of how they came to be living now in NZ? There is a large Italian community in NZ, many coming after both World War 1 and 2. In my home town of Wellington, many settled in Island Bay and were the local fishermen, other family ran the fish shops.

They have a fascinating story. Piero met his kiwi wife in Venice when she was off on her OE. Her kiwi friend (now Gino’s wife) met up with her in Europe at some point and well...the rest is history.
