Happy memories of going to Ruislip Lido as a child in the 80's. Glad to see that the little trains are still running - need to take my own children there now. Does anyone else remember there also being a miniature railway about 10 miles east of Ruislip in Roundwood Park (Stonebridge/Willesden/Kensal Green area)? I never went on it as I think it had already been abandoned by then but my mum swears blind that she rode on the little trains as a child in 60's/70's! :)
Now aged 71, I was born in 1946 and lived at Highland Road, Northwood Hills which is on the verge of Ruislip (Park) Woods and its Lido.I went onto this railway in its old figure of 8 track formation in the 1950s before the line was extended.Being influenced by 1950s adventure films, one day I lobbed a log onto the line and waited for the train to come along while I hid in the undergrowth. The train driver had to stop the train and then remove the obstruction before proceeding. In later life we took our son on a memory lane trip onto this railway for its full length after we had moved to North London. Our house was in sight of Haste Hill with its municipal golf course and I don't wonder why no-one ever gets out at this intermediate station as it leads nowhere!
Referred here by Geoff's 2022 video of RLR. I'm not sure that Matt has been home in the meantime - reckon he lives there. Even Haste Hill hasn't changed as the least used station. Brilliant, even without Siddy!
+fritspas I personally feel that Geoff is one of my favourite presenters of anything, full stop. The way he speaks is like your mate down the pub yet a massive train geek. I'm 18 so you can understand my problem, nobody else likes trains haha
Geoff is good, but it’s clear from his non-railway videos that he’s just not interested in anything non-Underground or TfL related and outside of London it’s strict railway stuff
Was here about two months ago and got told the railway's no longer in use, seeing as that's not the case I have to ride one of these trains! Preferably the steam engine if possible, it looks gorgeous!
Gem Faulkner Mad Bess comes out roughly on a monthly basis, she's out every weekend for Santa Special's(To My knowledge) at the minute, unfortunately Santa Special's are fully booked and you cannot purchase tickets on the day until Santa specials are finished. Our first day after Santa specials is Boxing Day 26th of December.
ThemeCrafter 264 The Railway is most definitely not closed! A load of volunteers including myself are here nearly every weekend making sure the railway remains running!
I never heard of this line before! Around Kansas City, where I live, there's an abandoned miniature railway (the roadbed, platform, and bridge are still there), and another miniature railway that'as still in use, and has lots of history!
Love it. Not just for summer ... The Santa Specials sell out at lightning speed as doting mummies like me demand them for themselves I mean their kids lol.
…i laugh when ignorant commenters and commentators insult Americans using the imperial system,it’s hard to ignore that your own people still use it too!
They have changed a lot of the infrastructure keeping the route extremely well maintained and upgrading the Willow Lawn station with a new turntable :) In terms of the family friendly atmosphere, it has not changed one bit tho, still a great day out!
I get confused about why is overground included in the mainline and located in canary wharf and stanford and also im also confused about the switching oysters its confusing sorry love your video's too and could you do the Secrets of the west ruslip line? :)
My father took me on the lido railway a couple of times when i were a lad....i honestly didnt thinkl that it would still be running......kinda refreshing to find something from my childhood that hasnt been shut down or isnt a starbucks or costa......i cant even remeber the train crash that happened.....1000's were killed.....trajic ;)
Jagger Comics 152 for anyone that's counting ;) and 1 guard and driver so 154 if your really picky, and if your even more picky hen you could have a trainee with the guard and driver, so 156, and technically 2 people could sit in the front guards, so 158. But seriously all this shows is that i have a lot of time on my hands
Hi Mike, yeah. Anyway, on the history page of the website, it shows how a few were injured while the council owned it. Also, Chris's PW email there's kinda a lot of ballast pull up! I feel a little bad for not wanting to do that!
It's very counter-intuitive, but it works. Click on Goeff's link and type in the destination exactly as it is depicted in the screenshot. (Just replace Willow Lawn with Haste Hill) If it doesn't offer you any RLR journeys simply search for a weekend journey and enable the "Routes with least walking" option.
It runs all year round, on weekends, bank holidays, and throughout the school holidays. the only time it shuts down is January, when heavy maintenance takes place.
Do they allow people to swim here again? When I went, I was told swimming in the lake's no longer allowed, but at the beginning of this video, it looks like people are.....
Normally I prefer Geoff as a narrator for the railway stuff but Tim is so excited here it's endearing.
Takes me back to 1978 - when I was a train driver at Ruislip Lido. And I believe Robert was one of the engines we had at that time.
Dang. This must be like the TARDIS for you, then.

I can't believe that I grew up near here, my dad was into steam railways and loved miniature railways but until today I had no idea this existed.

Tim, great video and your presentation is, as always, exceptional, thanks!

I like this guy, I remember him from train spotting live on BBC 4, surprised Geoff wasnt on that show tbf
I was just going to say I remember him from that. He gets very passionate about trains, talks very excitedly.
Geoff is more into the underground train scene, BBC is way to mainstream.
+fritspas I personally feel that Geoff is one of my favourite presenters of anything, full stop. The way he speaks is like your mate down the pub yet a massive train geek. I'm 18 so you can understand my problem, nobody else likes trains haha
Yeah, I enjoy this Londonist guy as well, but as an American, it’s often VERY hard to make out what he’s saying ... especially when excited.
Geoff is good, but it’s clear from his non-railway videos that he’s just not interested in anything non-Underground or TfL related and outside of London it’s strict railway stuff
That looks absolutely superb. Must pay it a visit sometime. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Love this xxx Well done RLRS xxx You will always have a special place in my heart xxx
Wonderful! I had no idea it was as extensive as that.
Was here about two months ago and got told the railway's no longer in use, seeing as that's not the case I have to ride one of these trains! Preferably the steam engine if possible, it looks gorgeous!
'no longer in use' ! who told you that? it is very definitely so still open all year round!!
+Londonist Ltd funnily enough it was a friend who lives pretty near Ruislip!!!
It is definitly open as I have ridden it numerous times

Hope Tim does more videos for you as this was a great video.
We had fun making it, Benedict! Thanks for your nice words.
I wish I could be as enthusiastic about anything as this guy is about miniature railways.
I so wish I lived in London. I would die to volunteer here. In America, they have these but bloody hell I can't find them. :p
God save the Queen.
Aswell some of these, not this one in particular, are made before the US was a thing!
they’re around in just about every state, the narrow gauge ones are the ones that are few and far between
Congrats on 40K subs!
I've been on that train like 2 years ago, good too see that you haven't missed it!
i am 68 now and had some great days out when i was very young here
I never heard of this line before! Around Kansas City, where I live, there's an abandoned miniature railway (the roadbed, platform, and bridge are still there), and another miniature railway that'as still in use, and has lots of history!
I actually spotted this miniature railway on a map of London I was browsing through randomly a while ago. I've been wanting to visit ever since.
Lived in Ruislip 1963-88. Used to love the Lido railway.
*Been there. Amazing place!*
Never heard of this. Got to visit now!
1:50 London's Lost Miniature Railways 1
I so agree #yespls
Oh, yes!
Lyndon Hartley
It's my first day volunteering here tomorrow CANT WAIT'!! :-D
How'd it go?
Going on one of these trains was a high point of my early childhood.
Love it. Not just for summer ... The Santa Specials sell out at lightning speed as doting mummies like me demand them for themselves I mean their kids lol.
I wish I knew about this when I spent a summer working at the former RAF West Ruislip.
I used to dream of owning a miniature railway like this, when I was a kid.
14 miles from Piccadilly Circus, 1,6 KM railway, the U.K. Is a mess of metric and imperial
Asher McCarthy agreed
We're getting there slowly, inch by centimetre...
When my brother, Miles, moved to France, he was forced to change his name to Kilometres.
Haw, haw, haw
…i laugh when ignorant commenters and commentators insult Americans using the imperial system,it’s hard to ignore that your own people still use it too!
I used to go on that railway all the time as a young child, living very close. Hasn't changed a bit ;)
Really? Wow I will then lol
They have changed a lot of the infrastructure keeping the route extremely well maintained and upgrading the Willow Lawn station with a new turntable :) In terms of the family friendly atmosphere, it has not changed one bit tho, still a great day out!
Love you guys!
2:23 is that mat the voice of tameslink?
yes
I get confused about why is overground included in the mainline and located in canary wharf and stanford and also im also confused about the switching oysters its confusing sorry love your video's too and could you do the Secrets of the west ruslip line?
:)
I hope Geoff can come to the railway one day?
i been there when i was a child it was fun day as i remember i didnt remember the lido
But seriously have you ever told a German how many yards there are in a mile and watched the look of amazement come over their face?!
I remember riding this railway when I was young
Had Mad Bess ever run as 15" gauge? Not ever seen any pictures or videos of her anywhere but Ruislip Lido.
I hope Geoff can come to the railway one day!
Can't believe that Tim used to do Londonist videos!
I love this video
Loved it - are you going to cover the miniature at Eastcote too ? (Im a local so pass the signs every day but never seen it)
My father took me on the lido railway a couple of times when i were a lad....i honestly didnt thinkl that it would still be running......kinda refreshing to find something from my childhood that hasnt been shut down or isnt a starbucks or costa......i cant even remeber the train crash that happened.....1000's were killed.....trajic ;)
Thousands killed? I work there, and I know for sure that a train only has a capacity of 160.
Jagger Comics 152 for anyone that's counting ;) and 1 guard and driver so 154 if your really picky, and if your even more picky hen you could have a trainee with the guard and driver, so 156, and technically 2 people could sit in the front guards, so 158. The only railway to, almost, encircle the North Atlantic. I wonder how many will get the reference?
Classic. Titfield Thunderboltsville still lives.
Lucky I live close to it
Mad Bess looks surprisingly like a scale model of the Ffestiniog's Penrhyn Ladies, Linda and Blanch!
That's because she was designed to! A half scale version of Blanche!
it is
I want to go!
I live a mile from it and it's a nice railway
Loved it
I can't plan a trip to Haste Hill on the Tfl journey planner....
***** Thanks but all I get is Haste Hill Golf Course
+FrostyCreeper10 That's the same station, it's sometimes to referred to that because of the giant golf course located directly behind it :)
It's very counter-intuitive, but it works. Click on Goeff's link and type in the destination exactly as it is depicted in the screenshot. (Just replace Willow Lawn with Haste Hill)
If it doesn't offer you any RLR journeys simply search for a weekend journey and enable the "Routes with least walking" option.
***** ohh
does it work in october- November time?
It runs all year round, on weekends, bank holidays, and throughout the school holidays. the only time it shuts down is January, when heavy maintenance takes place.
Is this a tourist attraction or do people actually use it as a commute?
Lincoln Ho | YEGventures.ca tourist attraction
I've ridden on it. Just goes round a lake in the woods. Also mostly just kids who actually ride it.
Lincoln Ho | YEGventures.ca Unlikely. Northern terminus is a golf course!
1:50 Now I know why there was track on the path yet a few metres, a train cab stuck in the ground
where's Geoff?
Daniel Hornett did vicki look different in this one??
Behind the camera!
The steam locomotive looks like Blanche or Linda from the Ffestiniog railway
I live in Ruislip 😃
Does Tim work for Londonist?
He's a legend he work on the gtr
I cannot believe that they had people in the Water back then, For YEARS it has been banned to swim or even touch the water

Do they allow people to swim here again? When I went, I was told swimming in the lake's no longer allowed, but at the beginning of this video, it looks like people are.....

Rebuild that lost minature railway!
That guy talks fast
Tim. In. Ruislip.
Not jealous at all!
If the Ruislip Lido Railway is on the "wrong" side of London for you, then check out the Swanley New Barn Railway..
steamdriver.wixsite.com/snbr/
Tim is my mums sisters son
Hello Oliver! I hope you are well and enjoyed the video. Tim.
cousin... the word you seek is cousin
TIM IN FUCKEN RUISLIP
Why does the voiceover sound like hes trying to be funny or put on a silly voice?
Because he's trying to be funny or put on a silly voice.
Is it just me or is he speaking really fast
No, it's just you, he isn't speaking all that fast.
Sounds like a helicopter.
I'm sorry to be critical but my god this bloke talks unbelievably quick, please slow it down a bit but otherwise nice video
Yeah he is a bit too enthusiastic (and that's coming a rail enthusiast)
Aha, so not just me then?
I hear him chewing Gum or something... :(
