I actually met Howard at a photography convention in LA years ago. He was kind and generous. I wanted to purchase his book and I was short of cash. He gave me a copy without a thought. I was totally blown away. I am sad that he is no longer with us. Such a great man. Thanks for the story.

I’m a driving instructor in the uk.I got a message yesterday from an ex pupil saying she loved our searches for benches...and was referring to us stopping when I saw shots mid lesson. She loved it and had to really. We look for pictures in every waking moment don’t we and when things collide and all fits together yes it’s a thing you can’t put a price on.
    You are an inspiration bud.

Witkin was a motivating factor for me in my early years of photography. I didn't strive to replicate the content or genre but I'll never forget when it first dawned on me what i was looking at. "Wtf is that?... Oh, oh man..." I was hooked in a train wreck kinda way.

Bravo Milnor. I was able to watch the first 12 minutes of the live show you did two weeks ago. I was hoping you would mention Catherine Leroy. I watched the rest of the show later that night and was glad you did. Vietnam was the war I grew up with, ( I was 10 years old in 1969 ). Catherine was on the cover of American Photographer magazine in 1988 or 89. That was a great article. Her photographs from the war hold lessons we still ignore. I have her book "Under Fire", a great tribute to her fellow Photographers. Her other book " God Cried", about the war in Lebanon is next on my list.
I think the work you are doing now will inspire and educate the young Photographers who are just getting started. They don't have our perspective of film photography or a world where people wrote letters. Hopefully because of you the new generation will be inspired to read books and learn history and think of photography in a new way. The fact that you can inspire an old guy like me speaks volumes. I'm supposed to receive my AG23 copy tomorrow. Looking forward to supporting more of your work in the future.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505

All good Keith. She isn't what well known it seems but what a career. She told me stories about Lebanon that were pretty crazy. I love letters as much as I love photography. And happy to hear you are getting an AG23. My man.

It is unusual to find someone on TH-cam today that actually has an understanding of life. What you said about those characters is so true. The photographers or those that pass the bar, have ate, slept, dreamt about what they do, and continued to do that for decades. Like you, to strive to be close to people like that is inspiring, but for us mere mortals it is a continus struggle. And I am talking about our generation or older. The youth of today have it too easy, if the answer cannot be Googled, it does not exist for them. Your Words, Rants, are inspiring for us Meer mortals. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Phillip. Just grinding it out like everyone else but was fortunate to arrive in photography when I did. And to get the education I did. I don't see having this knowledge, or experience, had I grown up with the Internet, something I thank my lucky stars I never had because it would have destroyed me too. Same for video games, TV and phones. Isolation tools that are very effective.

Hi, Dan. I've been watching your videos and it's a breath of fresh air on a website that is 99% lens sharpness tests.
I was wondering if you could do a video on keeping a journal? You often talk about how important it is to keep a journal and you've shown some of your journals in the past, so I picked a cheap one up off amazon but I dont really know where to start. If you make such a video, it would be cool for you to go over maybe some of your own journals, what you include, what inspires you to start writing, what type of things you write, how often you write in them, how quickly you go through a journal, etc.
    Thanks!

Too Google and all these IT companies come here to build huge data centers to store data, so that they can market themselves using renewable, green energy. They buy up former army caves in the mountains and everything to build data storage centers. With regard to your idea of doing a film documenting you in the field: Recently, I watched a British photographer who has his own TH-cam channel conduct an in-the-field speedlight tutorial. It went into great depth, following him through several setups and lighting scenarios. He had a crew of young people I assume were his students shooting him at work, using at least two cameras, sometimes three, covering it from several angles. It got really annoying because the crew were constantly in the shot and proved to be really distracting. You can tell that a lot of the footage didn't get used, mainly relying on the "A" camera. Having worked in film and tv for years, particularly in reality tv, I've seen how the presence of even the smallest and most professional of camera crews can be really disorienting and distracting to the subjects and the environment they're shooting, which is antithetical to the work you do. This is probably stating what is already obvious to you, but It seems like if you are going to make an in-the-field film, you need to find another photographer you trust who is also steeped in the work of documentary photography, who works like you and knows how to blend into the background, shooting with minimal gear. I greatly look forward to seeing the video when you do get the chance to make it happen. Thanks for all of the wisdom and inspiration you're so generous in sharing with us.

Nice content as usual, but this "he's Canadian so he's better than us" strikes a bit weird and is a negative comment. Through my ex-wife's extended family I met tons of Canadians at a time, and the ratio of nice people vs. jackasses was the same as here in the US (among Greeks or not). Here's a revised version: "he's part of an older generation that was kinder and more positive, more social and happy". That would match my observations in the US. "Old world" people are generally nicer to hang out with.

@@DANIELMILNOR505 Then I have to apologize for misunderstanding the comment. I find your insights refreshing for the new photographers, unfortunately I don't have the time to listen to much. That also re-confirms my opinion that social media in any form is ground for misunderstandings, because one can isolate sentences and make invalid conclusions, as I did in this case. Jokes aside, people in smaller towns or "countries with small town mentality" are generally more friendly and easy-going. Can't compare easy going folks in a small town Montana (or Canada) with Londoniers or New Yorkers :-) Keep up the good work.
