      Ptah, that is hilarious, but I'll take it. I think the key is I'm not selling something. At least not yet. YT is a very odd place. There are some real gems out there, but to your point, you have to wade through masses of people to find them.

    A bit late to the game but I serendipitously stumbled onto your vids. I can’t begin to tell you how REFRESHING it is to hear you talk about tough love. We live in such a world where everyone gets so butt hurt over their perception of rejection. Of course I’m your age so perhaps our generation was the last for “not everyone’s a winner”.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505

      Gayle, love the description of rejection. Yes, I'm used to it and impervious. I remember losing in the flag football championship in rural Indiana in the middle of late fall. Cold, muddy, double overtime. Nose bleed. Sure, the other team's coach was player his son who was two years too old for the league but that is another story.

    Whilst not what I'd refer to as a documentary photographer, I am heavily into the work of Don McCullin, arguably the best conflict photographer of all time. He once said he had so much empathy for the people who always get clobbered in war, the real victims; which is the poor and working classes who don't have the Mercedes Benz and early communications so they can get out of the way fast. He relayed how, that's the position in life he'd come from, a poor, working class family in the more deprived areas of London.
    His image of the shell shocked marine in Vietnam, The Albino Biafran boy, the civil war in Cyprus - really harrowing stuff.
    It's been long held that people want to look away when they see his images, but he has always demanded that people don't cop out, that they face the horror.
    Brilliant installation, Dan, even if I'm late to this one. Couldn't agree more, the more invested you are in a project, the deeper and more meaningful the story will be.

    Good talk. You talk like I think.
    I spent from 2010 to 2020 photographing people from the knees down in my small, artsy town. I finally printed 60 11x14’s and wrote a story about every one. Hung all 60 at a solo exhibition and everyone in town came and bought the photo of their legs or their friends legs or their kids legs. It rocked. I have several other long term projects going, never really heard anyone talk about it the way you do. I love the long haul.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like that. What a twist. Just the knees down. I don't think long-term anything fits the modern online culture which is about posting as much as possible.

    I really like your no BS straight talk videos. One of your earliest videos inspired me to collate, edit and print one of the projects I had in mind. I printed 3 copies alongside the loose prints of the same photos. I’m so glad I did that, because it made me realise I have to spend way more time working, shooting for that project and finally editing the heck out of all of the results.
    Thank you very much for taking your time and trying to nail these ideas into our heads. 🙏 👌🤙

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yavuz,....you went to print. In two ways. That's rare. And, when you throw in what can be learned in regard to typography, page layout, etc. It's nearly endless.

    • @yavuzyilmaz_01
      @yavuzyilmaz_01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am a designer by profession (~20years), so I “sort of” understand the paper, fonts, layouts, design issues. My concern was about seeing the finished product in my hand (we used to print & make prototypes for magazines we did) and also loose prints to stick them on the wall so I can digest the project. Also, see the difference in print technologies My biggest error was not making enough research into the subject to see other similar projects.
      What I realised was, although my images were enough to follow certain story line that I had in my mind it wasn’t detailed enough to make reader’s time worthwhile. It was telling a short story, but I felt that it needed a novel. ;)

    Hey Daniel, I mastered in Theology, work in the software industry and have a wife, kids, etc and recently found photography to be something I want to learn about, why? I want to tell the story of my kids (not online), in books. The way you approach storytelling + overall cultural and knowledge (inner knowledge) is really good. More than technical skills, you are giving people tools for wisdom. Wisdom is a simple word, in 2020 it is not even considered. In a fast food world, wisdom sounds boring, too complex or traditional, but it is exactly what genius have. Stay creative. Will watch part 2 now.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, theology. I'm amazed I haven't burst into flames, but this is a topic I am very keen on knowing more about. And yes, wisdom for many is painfully slow and too labor intensive. Look at the mask situation in America. Too uneducated, too radicalized to just put on a mask. And now, we just destroyed the next year of our lives.

    Hey Daniel - thanks SO much for a great video. There's absolutely nothing I would disagree with. From intent, to approach, to editing, to mentorship, to printing (actual or not!), to social media. Everything makes sense, and has been the approach I've taken since my first long-form project a few years ago. My 2-year project 'The Downs' was my first project, and really hooked me in to a fuller way of telling a story, and really is the main way I shoot now. Sure, I post single images on social media, but they are not really reflective of the long-form projects I work on. They're incredibly fulfilling. The Downs was a massive undertaking for me. It was geographically a distance from me, and I made 100s of trips up there, spent SO much money to get there (my car was even broken into there...so there's that!), walked hundreds of miles in all weathers. Exhibited the work a couple of times, took well over 7500 images, employed the experience of a couple of people to help me edit...it was all a very good experience. So, yep, very attached to the project (and approach), and love it still.
    Thanks for putting the video out there for more people to consider.

Already on my way to print with my first 'mini-magazine' through MagCloud with samples/proofs already in my hands. Look forward to seeing more content from you and perhaps cross paths some day. P.S.
