Hey hey, this was a nice new years surprise. So nice to have you back, I was disappointed when you left, I totally understood why you wanted to leave, but your channel does give great insight to the photography world that is not being talked about anywhere else, that I've seen. And yes, to all 3 of the subjects you mentioned at the end of your video. As always, thanks for sharing your years of experience and thoughts with us. Be well and stay safe Dan.
Whoohoo! Super happy to see you back here Dan. Your irreverent brand of humour, insight, commentary and above all, the well directed motivation you provide, was sadly missing. No pressure. Anyway, I echo everyone else.......very happy day.
Get this man a beer. Very happy to see you back on the TH-cams. Just taken the time out to revisit some older content. The random call landed at "Shifter: How to Photograph on Vacation" from five years ago (is that old enough to be vintage). Quite brilliant and relevant today. Good luck for 2025.
Very, very happy to see you again. You have such much insight, knowledge, and a quirky personality, so in other words, you shouldn't be hidden away. You need to be here. Thanks, Daniel!
happy you are back over here. your devotees need you. (frankly, i was "wasting away" without the content + important stuff i always learn from you). ready. x
Glad to see you back. And those two photographers (and everyone else who has said it) were correct: you were making films and giving information that nobody else was.
Loved your picture package videos. Discussing how to put together a series of images, what works, what doesn't. Love projects, stories and editing books. Thanks, look forward to more
Glad to see you back on youtube. As someone who is probably one of the youngest people watching your channel (20 years old) I know I never would've found you otherwise without you showing up in the youtube algorithm. A fact of the online space we inhabit, like it or not. You've gotten me to get back to reading physical books (used to all the time when I was younger, then social media unfortunately took over) and I plan on starting to journal soon as well. And focusing on photography projects instead of just throwing images into the void of instagram. (even as someone who is only doing photography as a hobby right now). You offer a refreshing perspective on photography (no gear talk, thank god) and life that has been invaluable for me. Dunno if you necessarily hope to have these films reach people my age, but they do and they are wonderful.
Hey young guy, glad you are here. And the reading/journaling thing makes me happy. I've been tinkering with new journal technique for some of the imagery and it's coming along nicely. Will share when I can.
Dan!!!! Thank you very much for coming back and making your videos!!! I have learned SO much from you and your videos and can't wait to keep learning with you!!!! Thanks again!
Good to have you back in my short list of TH-cam channels feeds that have great content. More books reviews and tips on journaling and would be great thanks!
Although i do enjoy reading your blog tons, i also enjoy the videos. Journal videos, books, birds..i could go on. You got that creative mindset, anything you throw at is, we'll watch.
THANK YOU! I’m not trying to blow smoke up your butt but I’ve kept checking back to see if you had anything new. Behold and lo! Thank you Milnor! Now - the wish list: long term projects, book reviews, Q & As.
Welcome back! Your photography friends were absolutely right- I’ve spoken about you often and shared many of your incredible videos on documentary photography with them. Honestly, I believe these videos are treasures, and I haven’t seen anything like them available online. They offer insights that go far beyond what you could learn in a typical photography course. I'm genuinely excited!
Ah, so kind of you. Glad you are finding something of value. That's my goal. I went to PJ school but most folks will never get that opportunity, so what can I do to bring them up?
Beyond thrilled about your return. Like many others have said, you're the only one I've come across here sharing this type of knowledge, henceforth known as Dan Wisdom. Welcome back, my friend!
Delighted to see you back - coincident with a Blurb delivery expected tomorrow... talk to us about your personal passion projects - but you have free rein to talk about photobooks
Glad to have you back, Dan! Those comments about 30 year olds sounds like you're 56. When I was 30 I had no use for older folks, it was only until I was older that I began to tap all that experience and became fascinated by people with miles on them and lots of stories. I don't take a step outside without a camera. I never leave without one...and I'm so old I don't give a fuck if I leave the house without pants, it wouldn't surprise me. Thanks for coming back, I never did get your desire to get off YT. You bring yourself which is plenty. Also I sold my 30 frames per second monster flagship and bought a Leica M8.2. I took a month and traveled Ireland and took over 40K pics and knew something had to change.
It is great that you are back. Your channel is amazing and those people are correct your channel does offer something the other channels don't. You concentrate on the photography and not the gear. Thank you for all the time that you invest.
I'm glad you're back. While I love photography, I have no delusions of becoming a professional. Still I enjoy your very unique and interesting stories. Also, you convinced me to purchase a Baronfig Squire pen and journal. Solid recommendations.
Great to see you back! I really enjoyed your picture packages videos. Definitely would be interested in BTS about how you shoot. And discussions about running/cycling/fitness might seem off-topic to some but I like incorporating that part of your lifestyle in this channel. And thank you - I know this channel is a lot of work.
Good. I think it's all one and the same. Training is key to photography success. The days of the fat, chain smoking photog are long gone. I can't do half the stuff I do if I don't train.
Really glad to see you return. There should be one place on TH-cam where those who think that "a fifty (maybe a thirty-five) and a notebook" is all they need can gather. Maybe party.
@ i was just kidding. because few years ago you did a video in which you say "oh, did you really believe i will shoot in color ? then switch to B&W" i found it hilarious !
Finally, I found your channel right before you decided to stop “YouTubbing” and that was a bit sad… but I kept my hopes. Just do your thing, I like it.
Good morning from Malaysia Daniel. I’m really glad you’re back on youtube. For some of us who can’t meet you in person, seeing you and hearing your opinions is all kinds of great. And the fact that you reply to all serious comments is a testament to who you are as a person. I haven’t travelled as widely as you and recently made a 1 week trip to a place which does not have wifi / phone reception / internet. I had 2 Leicas (MP & M-A) , 12 rolls of Portra and 18 rolls of Tri X 400. I learned a lot seeing the scans. Don’t rush into making pictures. Plan our compositions before framing the scene and always always use our best lens. There was probably 8 images out of the 100s i made which i love. I will be ready the next time though. For your wide angle workshops are participants required to use a 21mm or 28mm in terms of focal length ? By the way i purchased the most Daniel Milnor digital camera currently available recently - the Leica M11-D.
I'd be interested in seeing your process in the field, and also more films on long term work, such as the formation of projects, how you identify areas of interest and map those out etc
Funn you should mention that. I realized that in all of 2024, I made roughly one book and two journals. And I went in the field to photograph, for real, ONE TIME. That is just not right. I need to get back to the field and to books.
Thank you for NOT identifying or showing or talking about the camera, lens, settings you were testing/using. You are likely the only photography-related channel that wouldn’t. Can't say I missed you (I get your blog post by email) but happy to watch again. Hope to see a good proportion of posts on editing, sequencing, book layout/design. Post of Dan working his magic in the field I'll take as the universe prodding me to grab a camera and go take photos myself instead of wasting time watching you do it 😂
Talking about the cameras will get you the views, but will also get you an audience of less interesting people. Not for me, and besides, I don't know much about the cameras.
In no specific order, I enjoy your Dispatches, which I'm catching up on, For What It's Worth, as well as your TH-cam films. I'm a photographer who's constantly shooting and as a byproduct, there's a lot of editing to do. Listening to a podcast or even having a film playing in the background allows me to work and learn at the same time. Unfortunately, as good as your website is, it demands 100% of my attention. I'm absorbing everything I hear on podcasts and films, but I'm still able to give my full attention to my image editing. Films about long term projects and what it takes to plan and execute one as well as journaling, book making, sequencing, etc....are all things that anybody with a body of work should be thinking about. As far as I'm concerned it's also ok to talk about the tools of the trade as instruments as opposed to products. Even exploring the services that Blurb offers, as well as the book art that people are making with their images wouldn't offend me because you actually work for and use the services of the company, you're not "sponsored" by them. Also, you can only make so many prints, I think it makes a lot more sense for a photographer's work to be brought to life in a book. Up until a few years ago, when catalogs were a thing, I photographed high-end jewelry that would end up in print, until the holiday was over and then they would, as we used to say, end up lining bird cages. To me that sums up IG. Welcome back!
Love the over lay text about active tracking, and asking us to stay with you. As if the camera was giving us a choice choice.....hahaha. As a introvert living an uninteresting life, I'm interested in more of your party conversation mojo.
Give us more on long-term projects and publishing. My long-term project, if you care, is cruising our boat through Mexico with my family. I would like to publish our adventure, not as a photobook, but as a sort of cruising guide or novel. You got me hooked on Blurb for my family photo, which I published for my kids and mother, and I am currently in the process of reediting now. Show me how to use Blurd for zines and full magazines that I may apply to a full pictorial novel/cruising guide concept. If you're still reading, good to have you back!
Love the videos mate and the content is totally different. This isn’t going to be very helpful but honestly every video you put out is fierce entertaining ( Irish slang sorry! ) 😂 Would enjoy seeing how you work in the field. I also loved your videos where you went through some of your old work. Loved that stuff. Cheers mate
Welcome back! If at some point you still dont feel like doing videos maybe you can try with podcasts, in either case i "watch" your videos with my eyes closed 🤭
@DANIELMILNOR505 haha! Seriously though, glad you are back. Don't always agree with what you say but you remind me to think and analyze and consider. Something very very few TH-cam channels offer. Miigwetch.
Just so you know, I'm 72 and I found your TH-cam about Three months before you quit.I thought this guy was good and he's quieting, damn! If we ever mean up I'll give you an ear Full!😂
I think its good that you're back on the TH-cam. I am happy to consume your written content over on the Shifter website, but I can watch TH-cam videos on my TV, which I prefer because: 1) My dogs can sit on my lap while I watch; and 2) Everyone knows anything you watch on the TV makes you smarter. P.S. that tracking thing your new camera is doing is super weird looking.
@danielmilnor505 soon. I can’t move around much right now because young kids, but when I can, I’m planning on hitting every photo event in Europe. I miss travelling.
What a breath of fresh air! Brilliant job. JB Colson says hi. Topics?: doing books on Blurb. I started doing this this last year based on your videos and now it's basically all I shoot for. Anything you can share on what directions to take it in would be great.
100% unique which is why people watch. The candor is unprecedented on TH-cam. Good advice about the old people. I cringe when I see these “movers” who are 35 and have no gray hair in their organization. Old people will reduce the number of flat squirrels in your life.
I'd be interested in hearing what others think is your unique contribution to photography content on TH-cam. For me it is the photo edits and creating picture packages. When I go on a trip and take 200 - 300 photos, I try to edit that down to dozen or half dozen images, and create a 3-4 picture sequence that represents the trip. I find that is a better way to share those photos with friends then the dreaded 200 photo slide show.
You're a very good storyteller and that seems to be what helps your advice really stick in our heads. Can you share any stories about A) Which photography project/assignment in your lifetime has required you stretch the most and B) What was the nature of the most recent photography project/assignment that required you to stretch?
Hi! I watched your videos on TH-cam because I also keep diaries and have recently started to illustrate them with my photos. I would like to know more about this topic. You also look great at your age, make a health page in your broadcasts, how do you manage it :) Good luck
Ah, the journals just got a new look. Still experimenting, but I'm liking the early designs. Will share more when I can put something together. My health is another. matter....
What happens when you are the oldest at party? I look for the youngest couple and start the question thing too … yes I always have my Fuji x100 on my shoulder too and I get questions about it for a lot of people think is film camera. Really is a good ice breaker. 😊
Hey Dan :) ,, Hope You are back for at least a long while (Like talking with a good friend)(we were both at the AZ Rep (not at the same time))!!!! Everytime You would do a short I would prod You to come back :) When You get to 73, party's, are far n few :( :( :( Yep always carried a camera (still do)(now a Z50II) :) :) :) Live , Luv, Shoot Nikon !!!!!! Luv Ya Man :) :) :)
It was 14degrees this morning and this coming Saturday the low is 2. I'll see the bike come April. But loving the damn thing. So light and so much fun.
I'm going to do it like my cat would do it when I returned home after a trip... "Pffft, so you decided to come back then!" ... also, what's with this auto-panning thing? I feel queasy.
It's absolutely true; your videos are unique and offer things that no one else does. Thank you, Dan!
Thanks for saying that. I'm just glad something I'm doing has some type of resonance.
Well glad to have you back, we need more grumpy old
Men around here.
I agree! Now piss off!
Welcome back Dan. Would like to hear about experiences in the field, stories behind pictures etc. Cheers!

Thanks Mike. Appreciate that. Glad I'm providing something of value.
Very good news! Your comments are outstanding and really unique in the youtube world!
Thank you!
Glad you’re back, Milnor. (Really glad!!). As far as topics go: you can talk about ANYTHING and I’ll watch. So just do your thing. Cheers
On it!
Oh bloody fantastic , thank god your back , i keep thinki ng about that girl in the plane. 😊 my year just got better again
Glad to be here!

Anyway, I echo everyone else.......very happy day.
Thanks David. Glad I'm doing something worthy.
Great to have your mature and thought provoking approach back
Get this man a beer. Very happy to see you back on the TH-cams. Just taken the time out to revisit some older content. The random call landed at "Shifter: How to Photograph on Vacation" from five years ago (is that old enough to be vintage). Quite brilliant and relevant today. Good luck for 2025.
Oh man, such a crude film but I think the idea of worthy. And who doesn't love vacation!
Greets from Bulgaria, I am happy you will be here again! We are lucky that we have you!
Hello Bulgaria. Hope to see you some day. And thanks for writing.
Welcome back Dan, good decision. Missed you here.
YES! Thank you for coming back.
P.s. Turn off auto-center or whatever it is called, Tracking for the sitting videos. It be great. :)
Yes, that was just a test to see how it would handle an on camera "thing."
Very, very happy to see you again. You have such much insight, knowledge, and a quirky personality, so in other words, you shouldn't be hidden away. You need to be here. Thanks, Daniel!
Ha, quirky. That is being kind.
Yes, Q&A is always interesting. And a film about how you work in the field would also be interesting.
Q&As are fun and easy. Got it.

Right on. Would love to know more about your trip.
Glad to see you back. And those two photographers (and everyone else who has said it) were correct: you were making films and giving information that nobody else was.

I am SOOO happy to see you back! People are right, you provide a unique view seen nowhere else! Welcome back!
Thank you!
Happy to have you back Dan, YT needs more content like yours.
Thanks Gary.
Very glad you're back, your videos are a refreshing breeze, invigorating even, amongst photography channels on YT.
Thank you!
Yes! Your videos are fantastic. I always look forward to them. Very exciting.
Thank you!
Loved your picture package videos. Discussing how to put together a series of images, what works, what doesn't. Love projects, stories and editing books. Thanks, look forward to more
All things I like making.
Glad you're back. It's with your help I've used Blurb for my first photobook. Working on a second because it's easy to use. Thank you Dan
Love to hear that.
Dan!!!! Thank you very much for coming back and making your videos!!! I have learned SO much from you and your videos and can't wait to keep learning with you!!!! Thanks again!
You are on your way Megan. If people had 10% of your work ethic, they would be too.

Photography tips and tricks plus general life hacks. Great to have you back
You got it.
It's so good to see you back. Thank you so much.
For me it is certainly a thing. A good thing. Thanks Daniel!

Solid party advice. Welcome back, just don’t ignore your blog, or even more importantly your newsletter. 😉

You got it. I need a good people project but not sure when that is gonna happen.
Nice that you are officially back! And "don't puke at parties..." Got it.
I guess if you are a stranger party you could get away with it. Like a foreign party in a distant land.
Bring it on, all of it, q&a, philosophy, projects and welcome back 🤍

Welcome back - thank you for the tips - next party, no drink and drive or vomiting
Those are two good takeaways. And spend time with the oldest person. Can't stress that enough.

Yaaaaaaaaaaa. That is all !!!!
Mic drop
@DANIELMILNOR505 haha! Seriously though, glad you are back. Don't always agree with what you say but you remind me to think and analyze and consider. Something very very few TH-cam channels offer. Miigwetch.
Thanks for reconsidering; 2025 needs you.
you might be right...
I so agree with the masses.
Looks like Las Campanas! I am a big fan of Santa Fe.
About the same distance from town but in another direction.
@ I figured. A lot of the areas have ‘that look.’
Just so you know, I'm 72 and I found your TH-cam about Three months before you quit.I thought this guy was good and he's quieting, damn! If we ever mean up I'll give you an ear Full!😂
Most likely, we will meet at some point. I'm out and about quite a lot these days.
I think its good that you're back on the TH-cam. I am happy to consume your written content over on the Shifter website, but I can watch TH-cam videos on my TV, which I prefer because:
1) My dogs can sit on my lap while I watch; and
2) Everyone knows anything you watch on the TV makes you smarter.
P.S. that tracking thing your new camera is doing is super weird looking.
Ha, yes, it's a. bit much for a static situation, but it does work pretty well in the field.
Welcome back!!
Thanks my French friend. Hope to see you later this year. Would love to just go and catch up somewhere, post whatever walk/talk I end up doing.
Whoa, JB. Lots more coming on Blurb. I need to be making way more books than I did in 2024....
100% unique which is why people watch. The candor is unprecedented on TH-cam. Good advice about the old people. I cringe when I see these “movers” who are 35 and have no gray hair in their organization. Old people will reduce the number of flat squirrels in your life.
Ha, I've not heard that expression but I like it and know just what you mean.
@ originally it was used to describe indecision. I think it has multiple uses.
I like the mix of serious subjects and bullshit nonsense. Welcome back
Bullshit is my game.
Mostly photography related things. Industry, history, pro tips for those wanting to be photographers, photbooks, editing, picture packages, etc.
long time follower, agree that you have something special here, its probably the cynicism
Ha, my wife loves to remind me of that.
You're a very good storyteller and that seems to be what helps your advice really stick in our heads. Can you share any stories about A) Which photography project/assignment in your lifetime has required you stretch the most and B) What was the nature of the most recent photography project/assignment that required you to stretch?
It is always a good idea to listen to your wife and do what she says.😂
You are 100% correct.
This is good news, welcome back. The road to seeing is still $500 which makes me want it more, what's in it?
That's not bad, actually.
I give a shit and very happy! Regards from Germany
Get ready Germany. I'm coming over.....
My health is another. matter....
Get some Flickr goin' man.
I can barely do this.....Blurb is exploding, in a good way. I'll explain at some point.
What happens when you are the oldest at party? I look for the youngest couple and start the question thing too … yes I always have my Fuji x100 on my shoulder too and I get questions about it for a lot of people think is film camera. Really is a good ice breaker. 😊
That's a great camera for that reason!
Hey Dan :) ,, Hope You are back for at least a long while (Like talking with a good friend)(we were both at the AZ Rep (not at the same time))!!!! *Hits play on Welcome Back Kotter theme
My brother and I loved that show.
WELL WHO GIVES A SHYIT IF YER BACK AWN THE TH-cam??? Sorry Dan, I had to be that guy! Welcome back!
I was waiting for this...
I only puked a couple of times at parties. The last was when I was nineteen. I’m now 61, so I guess I got that bit right!
There's always tonight!
What took you so long??
Life got in the way
How's that xr150 treating you?
It was 14degrees this morning and this coming Saturday the low is 2. I'll see the bike come April. But loving the damn thing. So light and so much fun.
I'm going to do it like my cat would do it when I returned home after a trip... "Pffft, so you decided to come back then!" ... also, what's with this auto-panning thing? I feel queasy.
Just testing. I love cats for that reason. Could care less.
I am not inviting you to my party 🎉 I can’t even post it on Instagram.
I'm coming anyway. That's point #11. Go even if uninvited.
Capricorn... 🤣🤣🤣
Enter party, go straight to bookshelf, if nothing on it interests you, leave
