Not sure about anyone else but I would like to see the process you use to get everything taped off leading up to paint.

    • @johnperkins630
      @johnperkins630 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I use a masking gun. There a few different ones. Some have paper, some have plastic. Both pull off with the tape adhered to the edge. One trick I learned is to not stretch the tape. Pulling the tape tight will cause it to have a tight edge and curl away from where you are trying to place it. Keep the tape slightly loose and it is easier to place. I have also have to place tape first then come back with a making gun in really tight areas. Take your time and play with it.. When it comes to paint prep is 95 percent of the work, sanding, taping and priming. You have to get those right before your paint can look good

I have been building for over 30 years. Trim work is and always has been very intimidating. I have learned a lot from watching your videos. It has changed the way I do trim and my work shows for it. I am no where near your expertise level with trim, but I am much better at it thanks to you. I have learned better "layout," "cutting" and "joining" techniques from you. I really enjoy and appreciate the amount of detail and thoroughness you provide. A lot of people leave out a step here or there that turns out to be a vital in the overall completion. Keep up the good work and I always look forward to your next video. I watch them almost daily.

Huge fan!!! Learned a lot of carpentry tricks from you in the short time I've been watching! Have you tried the new Senco 21lxp nail gun? It's amazing! I have been painting for over 20 years and would like to help you step up your spray game. Here's some of my techniques: Turn sprayer pressure down until tip starts tailing, then turn it up slightly until it doesn't, this is the optimal pressure which will reduce overspray drastically, use less paint and allow more control. I use a fflp410 tip almost exclusively for all trim with almost all latex products. Back of the surface 10"-12" and overlap each pass 50%. Turn your tip 90 degrees and you can spray an entire door or window jamb/casing without starting/stopping. Get yourself some zip poles and avoid taping to ceilings. They also make zippers for any plastic that seal of the room completely and eliminate any chance of overspray drifting out thru cut or overlapped plastic. I often run a portable 12" ventilation exhaust fan with a furnace filter in front of it with ductwork to outside air to help remove the "fog", help the paint dry faster and reduce the humidity in the room. Try Benjamin Moore Scuff-x satin or semigloss for trim paint, it is a game changer in the trim paint world, it dries faster, sands like lacquer and it's tough as nails compared to all other trim paints.

Lower pressure is the way I used to go, especially with a fine finish tip. Just enough pressure to keep the paint from spitting from the tip and without fingering at the edges of the spray pattern. Keep yall's minds out of the gutter. Even though one coat can cover when spraying, two coats give consistent sheen without flash overlap and durability. You're a perfectionist, so I'm sure that it's on point.

Nice video, although it may not matter as much since it’s wainscoting (low not at eye level) a additional point to bear in mind is to be conscious of dry spray. When spraying a wall of wainscoting when the top cap is sprayed first there will be a mist of overspray that falls down onto the lower panels, due to its fineness it will be dry typically by the time it gets buried in a sprayed coat thus will Telegraph they the film. Always start low and finish high👍👊👍👊

As a painter, my recommendation on pressure would be to use the smallest amount of pressure that will still atomize the product with an even spray pattern.
I usually start with pressure on the low end, test my spray and if I see lines at the end I go up on the pressure til those lines go away and it's an even spray.
    The benefits of lower pressure:
    Less overspray
Less risk of runs because there's too much product
You can move slower and are less likely to miss something
Better quality finish, no orange peel texture
I also have to say the prep in this room is immaculate, I want my jobs to look like this.

Nice video once again, I wish you were a pro so I could learn something LOL,,, kidding aside, the only thing that makes a person a so called pro is the amount of money they make... lol. in your case, you are a pro in both quality and passion, two ingredients that always go's into great result and you have both and then some..
I used to be a painter in an industrial filter manufacture that built filter housings for Ingersoll Rand, the funny thing is, at the time I started painting, I had never painted anything in my life, the boos I had at the time ended up quitting and walking out one day, well this left us in a bit of a pickle as you might imagine, we had orders that needed to be filled and no one to paint...
So, with no direction, I took it upon myself to start painting, I started out with mixing the paint with lacquer thinner to what I thought weas the right consistency, I took 4 or 5 old 55 gal/drums and practiced on those, and then within 30 minutes I started painting my first unit and I messed it all up, runs all over the place, I washed it all down and re painted and it came out pretty good and from there, the rest as they say was history.
The really strange thing is that the company for almost a month never even acknowledged or even wondered who was painting and filling these orders, eventually they posted the paint job on the job board and of course I applied and officially got the job. LOL
The company was shit, never once a thank you for takin g it upon myself, no recognition nothing, not that that is what I was after but it was just strange, after almost a year, I too ended up walking out and quitting, the company, like China is asshole LOL.
Anyway, in very short time I was very good at painting with no formal training or help or insight. just do it. that's the motto, just do it.
If there is one thing I have learned in my life' is that humans are amazing, we can do anything we put our minds too, but if their is no goal their is no purpose and without purpose their can be no reason and without reason there is not passion. and on and on. so have a goal and the rest will come if you stop being afraid and JUST DO IT, it may be hard and you may fail a few times, but after 3 attempts. you'll be golden,

Your gloved hands will have paint or get paint on them and it all gets sloppy. So just turn your wrist and elbow it's a lot faster. I've been spraying for about 3 years and i'd just snap my wrist back fast and not go upside down. I have never seen a carpenter spray before so he is very unique in that.

I have a graco magnum x5, after I got done spraying and it was dry. The walls had a sandpaper feeling to it. What do you think was the problem

Thank you for all your wonderful videos! Do you ever encounter wavy or uneven walls when wainscoting? Inspired by your work, I built panels which came out great but now I’m faced with one 15 ft wall in my dining room that has two areas where there is a 1/4 (2 ft) and 1/2 inch gap (1 ft) from the wall. When you encounter uneven drywall what do you do? Shim? Float? A response or video on these types of issues would be very helpful. Thank you.

How about a video on your process for masking off a room to be painted? There are no videos about that out there

I am considering purchasing the same gun, tip, and airless sprayer that you used on this project for light field work. I normally spray catalyzed lacquer and clear coat with a Cat-X HVLP in the spray booth of my cabinet shop, but occasionally have to do some trim work on-site to complete a kitchen or bookcase I have built. Such items don't always jlend themselves well to prefinishing before installation. Also, it's impractical to try to spray lacquers on-site as the clients will have to leave their home until the toxic vapors dissipate. Not a great plan.
Can you recommend a specific water-based paint that will spray nicely with this setup that I can get SW to mix for a compatible match? Thank you in advance.

Did you shoot the satin or semi Emerald? I almost exclusively use Advance, but after the brief construction lockdown was lifted here back in the spring, I ended up giving Emerald a try b/c Sherwin-Williams had a much easier online order/pickup process than my BM store. The satin deep base used for the door color (almost black) was fine - really liked it. But I had all kinds of issues with the white wall color which was the high hide white base. It passed the eye test when done but it was rough to the touch almost like chalk or milk paint (I spray over BIN shellac as well). I went and got more at a different store to make sure it wasn't a bad lot and tried spray/brush/roll over different primers etc - same result no matter the process.

Awesome demonstration of spraying the wainscoting.. just a heads up, it looks like you left the spray gun stream on high pressure.. that won’t be fun when you go to turn it on next job and forget you did that..

Got a random question for ya: Do you think I can accurately cut 4in baseboard with the M18 7 1/4 miter saw? If so, what is the best method? If not, it looks like I will be buying a new tool :P Rather not as those bigger saws aren't cheap.

How would you go about doing a Greek Key panel for Weinscoting. I tried to post a picture on this but I dont know how. I Instagramed it to you instead. You are the only one I would take that advice from.
