The RPG Overhaul mod has a setting to generate functional random classes. I've never been brave enough to try it. I think it would make for a good challenge run. There are some other mods I recommend using with it to make it even more varied.
For the TH-cam only people, drifter is probably working on editing the no cover run (if he got done with that I'm pretty sure he did) with the rules of no cover, with the exception of if the games spawns soldiers in cover and if he has to for the story. Spark and shield wall cover also not allowed.
sounds like a good opportunity to use the s.p.a.r.k.s again obviously not a whole squad because he already did that but it sort of seems like a no brainer to build like 2, unless he straight up outlaws them
These challenge run videos inspired me to pick up XCOM 2 again after trying it and bouncing off a few years back. I managed to win my first run not too long ago! It definitely helped knowing ahead of time what kind of things to look for, and what kind of strategies were effective, so thank you!
I always wanted to buy XCOM, but never had the chance (don't own a PC). Watching these video made me aware of the existence of the WotC dlc, and a Nintendo switch port, that i managed to track down, and now i have been enjoying the game for a while! Too bad i can't use mods on the console...
James 'Stiletto' Thomas: "Doctor, I keep feeling tired all the time and my mental health feels like it's not recovering!" Dr. Drifter: "Don't worry, I have an idea." *loads gun* "Two weeks of sick day ought to do it!"
That purifier falling on the VIP was a violent xcom moment. Reminds me of the time I failed a mission because an advent soldier threw a grenade at the truck a VIP was in and it promptly exploded.
37:52, I like to imagine Drifter is holding the sword up, medieval executioner style, just waiting for the priest to leave stasis. "You can't stay in there all day, pal. :)" Also I had one of those clutch hacks once to take control of a sectopod, which felt amazing. From "Holy hell where did that come from, this supply box mission is screwed" to a truly devious smile that Advent were about to experience an ambush mission of their own when that thing goes stomping at them.
At 32:50, you lose line of sight on the shieldbearer because he was alerted and thus peeks out around cover into neighboring tiles and into your line of sight. When you destroyed the cover, he could no longer peek around it, and thus you lost line of sight. Peeking around cover creates some of the perceived line of sight weirdness both for advent and xcom.
i mean that logic is weird on itself tho.. so lets say someone hide behind a tabel and when u remove the table u cant see him/her but can see when they "peeking" lol
I was a bit sad because my specialist was getting wounded almost every mission so he couldn't get to max level and be viable endgame, but i was also expecting him to be called out for looking weird
42:10 Yes, that's pretty much what happened. Explosions will still shred explosion-immune units, but they can't shred without burning through any shield points first (the shields effectively go "over" the armor). So the rocket would have shredded if it had damaged away all the shield points...but it can't *do* damage because of the immunity, so the shields stayed intact, hence no shred. I'm pretty sure you're also right about the SPARK's Hunter Protocol triggering the shields via Kinetic Plating. That sort of "extra overwatch" ability is notorious for not showing the animation if the shot misses (I've spent a lot of scorekeeping time having to track down phantom missed shots from those abilities). Another awesome run!
I love to see August Lindenhurst in the barracks there Him managing to fight off the lost horde on his own and make it to the black market after xcom left him for dead is the stuff of legend
Getting to watch this live and then again in a condensed narrative format is always a good time. It gets the Spanky seal of approval. Keep up the great work Mr Drifter!
i would suggest while playing on easy or meduim. the ballistic challege. unable to use any weapon above the staring guns and the lowest thing each clas starts with. meaning Exo can use rockets but only rockets
Happy to add another soldier to the ranks of half-naked weirdos. Fun fact: in his first and only actual mission Jesus Christmas was deployed on, XCOM was also joined by a resistance soldier, named Christian. Coincidence? The two took out the gatekeeper with some pretty clutch shots. The cherry on top? This was the same mission with PP’s 14% hack. Truly a miracle mission if I’ve ever seen one.
Trust me, save scumming makes the game take so much longer. It's the difference between restarting a run at the first retaliation strike and spending hours on each mission reloading anytime you miss a shot.
@@BiteSizedProduction The point of the counter argument is that it only saves time on the game calendar. It takes WAY longer in Real Life hours to keep replaying turns trying to find a move order where all your shots land.
If you're going to do a save scumming run, we need to make it insane in some other way. Like, can you do it with 1 soldier in every battle (you can have multiple in barracks but can only use 1 solider to actually fight in any given mission).
Love watching these challenge runs, my suggestions for new ones would be 1) No reloading weapons in missions or 2) No squad size upgrades Looking forward to the next one!
Here's an idea for a challenge run: "Advent" only. Using a mod that lets you use advent soldiers is required, so not sure if that's an immediate turn-off. As well, if the mod isn't compatible with starting soldiers, you can use rookies (they do need to have advent-looking gear tho).
Looking forward to seeing how you do without your beloved mimic beacons! Love your runs, and you've inspired me to do my own Enemy Within mono-class runs :)
1. I’m never not going to be excited seeing a notification for a new drifter video 2. I tried this one at the same time as you (on your second channel). I got my first ever early run Savage sitrep… the one time I can’t use meme beacons.
Keep up the good content man! You got me back into xcom and I couldn't have been happier to play this amazing game again, with an equally amazing video about the game off to the side!
Templars are my absolute favorite class ever lol, they look immaculate, with reaper, blade storm, parry, a few focus building perks maybe some dodge/mobility PCSs and they are so much fun.
just came across your TH-cam its crazy how much work you put in i love it, but now time to spend a half a life time watching your xcom stuff. ill see you at the other end my guys
I think the only grenade slot for the grenadier would have been fair game since it is their secondary weapon just like claymore for the reaper. Nice to get another video.
I had a thought a while back about a tier 1 gear only run-no upgrades to magnetic or plasma, no exo suits, no predator/grapple/power armor. You would also be limited to tier 1 upgrades (basic sights, stocks, etc). However, you could still use unique weapons (lvl 1 hunter weapons and chosen weapons) and armor (version 1 alien ruler armor) Utility items would be permitted, but only in their most basic form (base medikits, base grenades, etc.).
This run was surprisingly not as hard as I thought but there is a noticeable change to strategy as you can't use grenades or mimic beacons and such great run also never would have thought that liason would be considered normal. Idea for next run no explosive run great challenge run Edit:Also that hack was so clutch xcom is going to xcom
man, I still really want a *Melee-Only* run! You'd think it'd be obvious since Firaxis introduced all this new melee in xcom. Yet somehow I haven't seen anyone suggest it, and I can't find any videos on it! There's like, 4 classes that can melee! ...When guns betray you, when RNG fails you, why not fall back on more traditional methods of murder? A sword. A fist. Classics. (or if your commander just likes kitting animu katana cosplay on his soldiers idk)
Now I'm not saying I don't want your channel growing, Drifter, but there are some neat things associated with a small community. People like Yukkahiro and Nerdpokegirl being recognised and called being one instance (being made local celebraties of some sort), as well as notable characters like Leeson being associated with community members. I'm a sentimental guy and I like these small communities. Callouts to community members just warm my heart. Much love from Australia!
Here's another challenge for you: Build your ultimate soldiers from each class and play the end mission with each of them solo. You can also spice it up additionally, by not using the same (unique) equipment with different characters, or put an ingame day count limit on yourself, or however else you feel like it.
they are funny and educational videos, they even teach you how to get out of difficult situations. a new challenge, to play only with the starting weapons. :D
13:36 If a unit falls directly on top of another unit, they can apply their fall damage to the unit they landed on. I don't think it would've changed the VIP's chances of surviving by much though, since the explosion still does enough damage to kill them anyways, without needing to land on the exact same tile as the VIP.
Honestly, it might be worth adding a mod that removes ambushes all-together. I feel confident in saying that nobody would miss them, as they're basically never a challenge, you always use the no-ambush card when available, and they just make the runs longer.
As for playing on veteran, difficulties below legend don't have many major differences, as say 5% less chosen health barely matters. By far the biggest difference below legend is aim boosts after missed shots, but that is easily disabled in the configuration files.
I think maybe the reason the overwatch was still active but didnt actually fire from the Mecs is due to a program bug. Sort of. Overwatch only actually gets removed from any entity if they take damage. Psi bombs from Codexea don't do damage. (At least not on the intital placement) but they do disable the weapons. I think what happened is the Advent Mecs were still technically in overwatch mode. But with no ammo. No shooting.
That hang you encountered on the retaliation mission is something that's come up a few times for me, especially later in the campaign (played a really long Legend run with extra health and other options to make the game even longer/harder). First time I also reloaded, but then I figured I'd try and see if you can let it do what it's trying to do and found out that if you leave it like that for a minute or so it will eventually progress.
Idea : video game characters only including you you use other game characters with custom classes for all of them and few that ar good ar "doom slayer" "gordan freeman" "kratos" "ofcs you" and many more
There's a mod that slightly tweaks will mechanics and more importantly fixes the will bug. Also, I swear I remember using console commands to fix the will bug before I used the will tweak mod. However I think that was part of different mod that added console commands. Which I used a few times to fix bugs. Stuck HP and stuck Will. So I guess, more mods to consider. :P
Hi drifter another excellent video! I have to say i have started templers class run in legend difficult and honest man and is very very hard!! My main issue is the setopod and the god damn gatekeeper because of their armor and large health pool, im just training and will do the same run without breaking the rules, i have break the honest man rule because some glitch like advante for some reason when they get in fire like the lancer, they get an extra turn!! I have manage to kill the chosen assassin and the hunter, and for me they were ease to dealt with, but took so long to finnish them because of the weapon that temples have, do so little damage to chosen sarcophagus but is going good and have break the a couple of times but yh!!a side note i don’t know if just me but dealing with the spectre is a pain, they can ruin your day with the shadow skill!!!
Perhaps try a "Dr. Vahlen's restraint" run? Where you cannot use or hit any explosives deliberately. A purifier blowing up after you shoot it or a car going up from your misses are fine, shooting a propane tank is not. Objective X4ing is exempt as well.
Try no weapon upgrades (aka only conventional weapons aka only tier one weapons aka only gunpowder weapons aka no mag-accel and no plasma). Additionally: no G-Launcher nor grenade upgrades. No special item upgrades. No upgraded gauntlets or blades. No blaster launcher, nor any plasma-textured armour suit abilities (the exo suit rockets are the base version of the weapon.) Upgrading via soldier abilities or breakthroughs are still OK, as they don't change the weapons conventionalness. just a "little" idea.
honestly the failed mission at 13:38 I would've personally greenlit a reload for, thats some bullshit out of your control, but I suppose as they say, thats xcom baby? :P
Yeah, but do you know where you can use items? In the rookies only run. Medikits, hellweave vests, flashbangs, grenades and the allmighty mimic beacon.
reducing the difficulty is reducing the challenge, so I'm personally not really fond of it and I can wait longer until a new video comes out. That's said. More important to me is your health and fun of making those video. So do what you think is the best for you
I could be wrong but I think the Assassin spawned in without any armour because you're playing on a lower difficulty than before, and armour/HP scales with difficulty. Sectopods only having 4 armour vs 5 and so on
Here's a challenge for you, no using class skills, including passive skills, if you have to promote your soldier, pick the skill you have to manually activate
I miss this game, always nice to watch the runs Drifter. And we can now add Julien to the list of characters to rain down the Commander's love on the Lost Sadly I can't for the life of me get my mods working from the Steam Workshop.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast I did try the old launcher but it seems to just freak out anyway. I'm working on it still but not too optimistic. Appreciate the suggestion though mate
Wow, this just shows how how much you know about this game. You made that look easy. I don't think I could have done that even if I had a lot of time to practice this game. I just played a campaign on Veteran difficulty and even though it's not the hardest thing in the world it's still pretty challenging for me, haha. I hope to see more of this great content! Keep it up!
you should do "can you beat xcom 2 using pistols only", mods that allow pistols on primary slots on soldiers of any class, the only rule is that you primary weapons allowed like the AR, sniper, bulpup, etc.
Someone else may have suggested it already, but my guess as to why the hunter had a shield is didn't the last time you fought him you hit him with a rocket before evac'ing? If he had the plating in that mission, perhaps the shielding carried over. If that is the case, I wonder if other things carry over.
54:43 Gameplay end
Yeah i am a funny man
not even going to mention that these are only really useful in the VODs

I used to be a reaper like you, but then I took a claymore to the face.
Here's a challenge for you, no using class skills, including passive skills, if you have to promote your soldier, pick the skill you have to manually activate
I miss this game, always nice to watch the runs Drifter. And we can now add Julien to the list of characters to rain down the Commander's love on the Lost
Sadly I can't for the life of me get my mods working from the Steam Workshop.
Have you tried using the Alternative Mod Launcher? Usually that gets mods working again.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast I did try the old launcher but it seems to just freak out anyway. I'm working on it still but not too optimistic.
Appreciate the suggestion though mate
This should be pretty brutally difficult.
Keep it up!
Ufo defense mission is guaranteed after the black vial mission iirc
Sometimes it's the later story missions that trigger it, I've found.
You don't need Mimic Beacons if you just bring enough rockets to MURDER everything that could threaten you.
you should do "can you beat xcom 2 using pistols only", mods that allow pistols on primary slots on soldiers of any class, the only rule is that you primary weapons allowed like the AR, sniper, bulpup, etc.
Someone else may have suggested it already, but my guess as to why the hunter had a shield is didn't the last time you fought him you hit him with a rocket before evac'ing? If he had the plating in that mission, perhaps the shielding carried over. If that is the case, I wonder if other things carry over.
I never used mimic beacons thanks for teaching me
Guess who's bsck. Back again xD hello ! Let's gooo. Btw I really like your intro music
Cheers!
i Always crack Up With this CLOSE RANGE stuff xDD
Love the vids drifter.
Another great run 👍👍
Next challenge - Can you complete XCOM 2 without using cover?
If you can it will confirm you are an absolute psychopath lol
Oh my God, no utility items? I know everyone is joking about mimic beacons, but the lack of grenades is going to be the real killer in my opinion.
Awesome video!
Even mods are buggy. Taht's XCOM baby.
