  • The Red-whiskered bulbul "Pycnonotus jocosus", also known as the crested bulbul, is a charismatic songbird native to tropical Asia. Imagine a feathered mohawk atop a sleek, 7-inch brown body, punctuated by pops of vibrant color: a splash of crimson beneath the eye, a dash of white on the throat, and a fiery undertail. This striking ensemble is further adorned with a dark "spur" marking the shoulder and a thin black "moustache" framing the face.
Red-whiskered bulbuls are social creatures, often seen in pairs or small groups hopping between branches, their long tails trailing behind. They readily adapt to human settings, making themselves at home in urban gardens and parks. In fact, they've even established themselves in Florida, California, and Hawaii as introduced species.
While their beauty and adaptability are undeniable, these bulbuls can sometimes become agricultural pests, raiding fruit trees and gardens. Nevertheless, they remain a captivating addition to any ecosystem, bringing a splash of color and a melodic soundtrack to the natural world.
Their melodious songs, described as a mix of rich warbles and scolding chatters, echo through the branches. You might recognize their most distinctive call, a loud, three-note sequence often transcribed as "kink-a-joo" or "pettigrew."
