I grew up as a youngster back in the 70's in South Africa on this man's music. Used his lyrics in English class for poetry at High School. I then went to the Military and it was even more popular then and right up until around 1995 we were all under the impression he had died of various reasons. He is an absolute icon and legend in South Africa. Probably more so than the likes of Elvis Presley. There is a South African band called Just Ginger in South Africa that do a cover of Sugar Man. Pretty much in his honor. Live on Rodriguez. You should have been the American icon. Shows you how important promoting, guidance and how crucial management is. Your music will live on. What a role model. Platinum as long as I can remember in SA. Love you, your demeanor, your absolute humbleness and the wisdom of your lyrics.
The Greatest Songwriter never known... in his own country...!! A True Enigma and the Pure Essence of a Truly Humble Man... He made the World a better place without even trying or knowing... I was introduced to his music 30 years ago on a Thai island, by some South African backpackers that all knew all the words to all his songs, and just could not believe I was from Detroit and didn't know who "Rodriguez" was..!! I'm happy he was re-discovered, sad that he has left us, and regret never seeing him perform live... Twenty years after first hearing his haunting & intriguing voice/songs, I watched 'Searching for Sugarman' in a Spanish Cinema and realized that this was 'That Guy' from 'That Hut' who on 'That Night' blew me away and now I cry again, for we lost an incredible man.
I went to his concert in Capetown just after the docie sugarman came out...A Swede needed a lift back to town...When I asked why so far to come to a concert...he replied he did not believe this story and needed to be in the crowd to be convinced.
Wouldn't that be amazing! Who could try and make it happen? I know he never caught on in the states way back when but people are learning his music now... just a fantasy I know but it would be such a beautiful thing.
When only a few people control the music that everybody listen to , it is like mind control. While Rodriguez was a simple Carpenter those few people were making millions of dollars off of his music , and that is a great shame. In today's world common people can get a microphone and sing their song also--and be heard. Rodriguez music will now be heard around the world.

I thank Netflix for adding 'Searching For Sugar Man". Without it, I would not have discovered him. At age 38, I thought I had heard everyone I was destined to listen to; but then I decide to watch this documentary last Thursday and fall in love with this genial genius and his poetry. So humble he is. I am so very happy he has now FINALLY caught on. It took our generation to accept him in North America because we are not from a time where a dude named Sixto Rodriguez, or just Rodriguez, would be shunned because he did not change his name to appease the masses i.e: Robert Zimmerman. It harkens back to Ricardo Valenzuela whom the record execs suggested a more WASPy name like Richie Valens. Thank you for your music. I have a favorite- Crucify Your Mind. That and other songs really speak to me. He is a poet on par with any of the singer-songwriters of the day.
Amazing artist, Great Musician. Hidden diamond tucked in the desert . Glad they found him. He deserves to be their after all the years that has been stolen from him plus all his Earnings...
They need to recover and Pay him back all those dues accumulated through those years of Fame that time forgot... He was the last person who knew how famous he was somewhere in another world..God bless his soul !!!
You know what blows my mind even more than his beautiful music? The fact that he was 72 years old when he performed here. Holy Shit! I'm writing this in Feb 2023 and he is now 80 years old and still alive. What a fucking legend!
He has a band in every country and barely rehearses with them. No traveling band. I suppose he doesn't want the responsibility. And he shouldn't, as he just gives away his money like a rapper spends it on you know what. And if you can such bands everywhere, why bother having your own and lock those musicians down? He won't tour forever, sadly.
I thought this guitarist was more into being a superstar than playing with the sensitivity and with Rodriguez that the songs require. I endured him because I love Rodriguez sooooooo
And now, 8th august 2023, he is definitvely with all stars above us !! I regret non having discovered his music earlier !! such a great ARTIST ! i saw the docu on tv just a few days ago...and was astonished, amazed....What a life, a legend !!! I listen to him every day since...Thank you Mr Rodriguez for your contribution in this world, you have made so many people happy !
I just discovered Rodriguez few weeks ago but I feel like He have been in my life all the time.. His words His modesty .. And musicians .. BIG BIG RESPECT .. Thank You
Hahahahahahaa maybe...yet his albums were issued in Australia and he toured there up to 1981. Australia, NZ, Botswanna and South Africa were his biggest markets. The demand was such that they even released a LIVE album in Australia... it was not released anywhere in the world. This was back in 1981.... so you might wanna reconsider who appreciated him. From watching the doco youd think he was only known in S.A. WRONG.!!!!
It's crazy enough he was still working construction for so long after the 1998 comeback. So he was found but still didn't break through the way he did now. The legend the movie created on top of the articles and forums is of course bringing him beyond South Africa now. But what about word of mouth after 1998? Did publications like Rolling Stone just leave this one hanging?
Yes, this man has not reached his age living a charmed life & needs help & support on stage. And as hungry as the crowd is to see & hear him on stage, such is his enthusiasm to be up there finally singing his songs to the world.
Thankyou Colin McMahon (Zimbabwean Irish citizen, cousin of Theresa, nephew of Auntie Rita, Super Refrigeration engineer and friend) for introducing me to this soulful poet in the late 1980's. Bittersweet and deeply moving to hear of Rodriguez passing , i relive some extraordinarily good times. forever in my heart🍀
It takes time to really realize how talented and legendary Rodriguez is, even more a big lesson of life for us, we probably all wonder what he would have do if he had the opportunity to do his passion for living, but at least he did it untill the end. Now, I can't wait IA to generate songs with his voice and lyrics to fill the void of all those years without him in the music industry...
This great musician saw the light of fame a million moons ago in South Arica. We appreciated his massive talent then and still do. you all lost out on his magic for years and nearly killed this great talent.
Jim Morrison was always known as the Electric Poet. But I think Rodriguez was the GOAT of electric poetry. My god, this mans lyrics seem to be from a different realm. He's just out of this world! Funny how he had the greatest respect and following here in South Africa. America didn't want him. It took a South African to find him after years of being lost. Is that Sixto Rodriguez...???? Wow to see his comeback and make concerts like that. Hehe Im so happy to see him finally do his thing. He still seems a bit stiff but for sure hes gonna loose up once he gets a bit more of that sweet sunshine in his face.
They are already changing the way your songs sound. We love you the man of the streets of Detroit, who sings from his heart. Come home our friend, to your soul in South Africa.
What a helpful, loving , generous, and kind hearted soul. His life is quite a story. I'm sure he has his riches, RIP Sixto. His daughters have so much to be proud of. I am adding "I Wonder" to my set list and can't wait for people to ask me if I wrote that.... They will have to hear his story and he will gain another fan posthumously.

His. But I agree, for a genuis singer-songwriter he didn't pick his stage name right. Had he been "Sixto", his life might not have been close to the same.
Real Unreal not too late, in my opinion. Rodriguez's story is a tragedy perpetuated by fraud, and it becomes a masterpiece expose extraordinare because of the time and the suffering. Rodriguez's story is a perfect simile of the state our world is in. Expose the fraud to live ( not to imply that he did the exposing or that he wasn't living the whole time).

Oh - my - goodness. I was looking at "Sugar Man" video game content creator on Ramble, and I discovered Rodriguez. WoW! The music is awesome!!! Thank you.
The guitar solos makes his songs more complete. The guitarist in this concert is good, but I would like to see and hear Eric Clapton play with Rodriguez. A legend and belated legend on the same stage would be awesome.
I'd love to hear genuine opinion on Rodriguez' music from legends like Clapton and Dylan. Clapton often seems game to play with others. Lots of pure rythm guitar work in Mark Knopler's band on charity gigs. Yeah, I'd love for Rodriguez to get a few more recordings and gigs with peers. Life's been hard on him. Perhaps harder than rock 'n roll would have been. But him mind is still gentle, humble and sharp and we can only be thankful of that.
RIP Sixto Rodriguez. 08/08/2023. A legend has left us.

Hugh his is an incredible story. I've only just watched the doco and it blew my mind!!!
Oh that's so exciting! I need to admit I just found these songs. It's amazing! What a talented singer!
Now, He is!
In South Africa, he was one of music's biggest icons. And nobody could find him...
I knew Rodriguez through South African rock! He was something like a Mysterious Rider, some kinda Zorro. His music is simply amazing!

@@phillindsey9797 As a Rodriguez fan born in Cleveland I agree completely that he definitely should be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
Amen!
It will happen. But far too late.
He is a dead legend now.

He was the man here in south Africa in the 90's, when he finally got here in March 98 we all had THE party...
Its so sad to think that at 38 musical discoveries are over, there's a whole world of old and new music waiting for you so you better keep searching
@@eland65 It was because of S Africa's love of his music that this wonderful artist was rediscovered and for that the music world is forever grateful.
Music is so universal. There's always another artist to listen too and Rodriguez is one of the best!!!!
Sent from another world to make us feel good! A true poet.
BRILLIANT!

He died on 8 August 2023.
Rodriguez should legally adopt that lead guitarist, so he would be onstage with him all the time.
He has a band in every country and barely rehearses with them. No traveling band. I suppose he doesn't want the responsibility. Hello from Russia. Watched the movie (in search of sugar man ) I've never heard a song by Rodriguez, so I listen to it with you and enjoy it.
It takes time to really realize how talented and legendary Rodriguez is, even more a big lesson of life for us, we probably all wonder what he would have do if he had the opportunity to do his passion for living, but at least he did it untill the end.
Now, I can't wait IA to generate songs with his voice and lyrics to fill the void of all those years without him in the music industry...
well shit this is great! Rodriguez deserves to have his songs heard . This band is outstanding
He also deserves to have his royalties paid to him by that thief, Clarence Avant.

Rodriguez, a treasure buried deep in a time capsule
He did work on my house once in Michigan didnt know who he was till I seen a sixty minutes documentery . Nice guy
Started listening to his music in the 70's and have had the tape, record, cd and now the mp3's... Still play a few of my favourites on the guitar!
Jim Morrison was always known as the Electric Poet. But I think Rodriguez was the GOAT of electric poetry. My god, this mans lyrics seem to be from a different realm. He's just out of this world!
Funny how he had the greatest respect and following here in South Africa.
