Super-cool. Herbie kind of pulled a Frederick the Great on Jacob Collier. In 1747, Bach visited the Prussian King's palace in Potsdam, where Frederick gave him a long and complex musical theme on which to improvise a three-voice fugue on the spot - and then challenged him to improvise a six-voice fugue. Bach composed the latter after his visit, and entitled it "A Musical Offering". Frederick's theme was clearly made difficult to challenge Bach, just like Herbie's was for Collier! And Collier nailed it - in his own way, kind of like Bach!

Such an amazing comparison. Thanks for letting us know
@Eggy Noggy - IDK...Likely all a lot of malarkey... Bach's keyboard virtuosity and multilayered harmonic & counterpoint skills could never be rivaled by a musician playing any 'monotonic' instrument. (IMO) *
What I wouldn't have given to see Herbie's reaction to seeing the results of his submission for the first time. You know there'd be plenty of laughter involved, and then he'd probably have gone over to the Piano and tried to work out wtf those chords are.
I love this thing Jacob is doing with #IHarmU. Along with his genius arrangements and compositions on his album, he harmonizes and arranges short videos that people submit to him. This one is particularly amusing to me because it almost seems as if Herbie's submission is a "challenge" for Jacob because the melody is a little weird and "outside" but Jacob totally nails it. I wonder what Herbie's reaction was after he heard Jacob's treatment of his submission.
I love these little projects, too, it's beautiful in so many ways, not only musically, but using music to bring people together, delight and have fun! I'm sure Herbie was delighted and not surprised by Jacob's response to his melody. Herbie knew Jacob would do something cool with it, but he couldn't have known what that would be. Therein lies the fun... :-)
For anybody to think that Jacob, although as brilliant as he is one upped Herbie Hancock....... this melody just simply came from Herbies genius mind. It's easy for Jacob to follow a form he didn't create. Thus proving the absolute mind job the creator did on Herbie!!!! This is godly
Hancock came up with some sort of dodecaphonic serial tune. It funny that such an experienced warship like him felt he had to challenge Jacob and felt nervous about it (that's my reading of his grin and choice of words, at least). Indeed, not a problem to Jacob.
No interpretation of Mr. Hancock's actions here could be further from the truth. As a master of the keyboard, he simply wanted to give Jacob a challenge that he probably felt would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do anything with. I believe he was impressed, pleasantly surprised and blown away by the result. Nervous? What are you smoking? It is telling that you see an adversarial angle to this when in fact it is purely collaborative.
When Jacob accepted his Grammy for his arrangement of Moon River, the first thing he did is talk about and show respect to the musicians whose shoulders he stands on. Herbie Hancock is one such towering musician. So, you hamburger flippers who know nothing of genius in legacy as it pertains to Hancock need to do your homework, humble yourselves and shut the hell up. That having been said, as I am a forever fan of the genius musicianship of Herbie Hancock, I am a HUGE fan of the genius and musicianship of Jacob Collier.
First hearing Hancocks melody was kind of negative and wierd and wonderd how jacob going to harmonize it. but the way jacob made it positive and beautiful is mind blowing 🙏.
How can i do a melody with you jacob collier i play the piano too as well as sing and play the sax please send me info on how i can send you a song to work with your really cool
Herbie's melody was literally a series of random notes, and Jacob was still able to work with it.
Super-cool. Herbie kind of pulled a Frederick the Great on Jacob Collier.

The legacy of iHarmU
I’m sure in both cases the challenger knew it would work out

musicartgeek I thought the same
he really one upped herbie by doing the intro too lmao
Herbie: okay Jacob, let's see what you'll do with this melody.
Jacob: Hold my beer
StretchDub More like : Hold my bear
Hold my bonkers
hold my chord
hold by bear hat
Hold my butter beer
Herbie knew this was just fuel for the fire!
It was a huge compliment that he gave him this task.
Pro tip: make sure the Herbie and the Jacob are in the SAME KEY
they are
@@Ryan-og4zf R/wooosh
Please explain the joke
@@williamnjagi2388 there’s a youtuber named adam neely who has an inside joke to make sure the vocals and the synths are in the same key. boom.
@@chickenman7727 I know Adams Neely, I just need to know which vid!!!
Thx 4 the kind explanation
I love Jacobs sense of humor. That little bit at the very end was funny.
Jacobs ability to tonicize anything is amazing!
@dylan foley What? Did someone say he was born with the ability?
You can gain abilities through practice haha
@dylan foley gift, talent ≠ ability
Jazz musicians love testing each other like this. Hahaha
Jacob cannot be stumped, beautiful jazzy stuff, would love to see the chord chart/progression of this!
careful now, it is rumored than whoever saw that chord progression ended up blind and insane
It's a progression, not cuthulu
2:31 just when you thought it was over
"every note works with every chord" -jacob collier
Errrrrr, no. You just heard it from Jacob Collier. It's basically one of the fundamental concepts of Jazz.
What I wouldn't have given to see Herbie's reaction to seeing the results of his submission for the first time. You know there'd be plenty of laughter involved, and then he'd probably have gone over to the Piano and tried to work out wtf those chords are.

Pétillant, jeune, impétueux, si intelligent et positif ... Je ne vois pas de limites à sa créativité ! Que du bonheur !
That last chord gives me goosebumps every time
man.. i just miss this era collier
I remember seeing this video for the very first time , I had NO IDEA who Hancock was. Shame on me smh shame on me.
Just make sure youre not missing people with whom Hancock used to play.
that's ok, it's been true for all of us up to a certain point in our lives. With the exception of his mother who knew right away ;-)
Woaw ! Some serious classic musicians to be reviewed !!!!
Hey.. Better late than never. Life is journey of learning and growth.. you just grew.. and took some HUGE steps with discovering Herbie.
lol lol loa ha ha ha thats funny lol I'm still laughing lolol
Jacob's mind must have felt like disney world with christmas music playing while it's summer. 👍Niceeee
Happy birthday to herbie!
Awesome harmony Jacob!
That's the most outrageous thing i've ever seen!
So beautiful brought me to tears. wow thank you
Both fLeXiBLe musicians...flexibility is important. Not just in music, but...in life.
Jacob absolutely destroyed it... Hahaaaa

From genius to genius
Anybody: “How high is your re harmonization level Jacob?”
Jacob:“Yes”
So playful! Love it
I just noticed that he said "Her....bie.....han....cock" towards the end. 2:17
Illuminati confirmed.
wow...it doesn't get any better than this...awesome...
How...HOW does he do it!?!? I wish I were there when he created this masterpiece!
.... If only we could have a peek into their minds......... The sight will be totally breath taking
that grin on herbie's face says it all. hilarious
Beautiful. This would be fun! I should try a harmonization of this melody.
Herbie deliberately tried to stump JC, but Jacob can put his Grammy up on the desk and polish it, because he wasn't stumped at all.
pure brilliance
WOW that effect at 2:07 blew my mind
What a crazy line. Great job.
What a genius!
it's funny cuz this applies to both of em
An applause button should be on TH-cam
I bet Jacob loved the challenge!
This is.... TOTALLY GENIUS!!!!!
Nailed ittttttt
Genius... Both of them!
Amazing!
Talk about harmonic genious!
Not often i'm impressed , this I like
Une tuerie !Oo
Bravo
Amazing 😊
It made my day.
Damn! I feel fortunate to have someone my age during these times who poses a challenge to me! Jacob's a genius.
BRILLIANT
That's incredible

I think he's drunk actually.
WELL DONE JACOB !!
Did anyone else hear that lick from Hans Zimmer's masterclass add? "This is a question..."
Not the same notes.
Close....same concept....question and answer..ok you baited me, so put some notes to your question and I'll put notes to my answer
Django Bates vibe…nostalgic for me
Jacob made music from the single notes. He can easily solve Hancock's challenge. He's a lucky guy, smiling.
Cuando dos genios se unen.
Amazing
My goodness jacob 🤭 . That's Amazing
The man managed to give it a serious Movie aesthetic moment
woah herbie looks lit
Yeah, Herbie already knew he was in for a treat
wow jacob is such a god
Genius!
............°-°'............... aaaahhh What a great day to be alive 🤩
Dreamteam. :3

You are best Guyyyzzzz !!!!!
AJAJAJAJAJA LO AMO ES UN DIOS
2:08 DID HE JUST SAY HERBIE HANCOCK LMAOO IM DEAD
To quote Conan, "do something with that, ya FREAK"
Jacob Collier and Norm MacDonald both given opportunities to challenge their genius.
True genuises together!

but what if it was all a bunch of fart sniffing and moon river is not as memorable or great as everyone thought
I.... there's no cut between the spoken intro and the multitracked singing. ...I'm broken.
Interesting. Reminiscent of Clare Fischer.
what a fucking BEAST
Wow!!! Dude is so clever!
he nailed it!
wow!

How can i do a melody with you jacob collier i play the piano too as well as sing and play the sax please send me info on how i can send you a song to work with your really cool
neither did i until 1984 the first Beverly hills cop movie theme song
Why would you steal this from Jacob colliers channel and upload it to your own?
noreaction I can't find It on his channel. Know what name it's going by?
Maybe because its not the isolated Herbie Hancock video like the one here?
But I got here from a link ON JC's channel.
hes not making money off of it.
I want to see a video of HH's reaction to this...
Me too.
He likely wasn't as impressed as we are. He's been around geniuses for most of his life
Even genius appreciates genuine talent.
yerim olm çok tatlı herif herbi henkak dolma dolma parmaklarıyla kafnlwan
Seems like a melody you would hear on The Wiz
I did not fucking expected that he also made that intro lmaooooooooo 😂
possible to see a reaction of his somewhere?!
Ты просто Супер
If herbie is a genius, collier is savant syndrome. Just outrageously talanted!
its like the movie Matrix, no one cant beat him!! hahaha
Maniac😭
Reminded me of the original Invaders From Mars.
jajajajaja... me gustaría ver la reacción de Hancock.
Bueno, espero que Mr Hancock no este usando pantalones blancos cuando eschuche esto.
I would like to see Herbie Hancock's reaction.
wow
Wow,,,i never seen that before
