  • Don't stop and blame it on the orchestra, know the score, and listen to what is actually being played. Great advice from Lenny! Taken from the documentary linked below:

    Bernstein is absolutely right. The players know when the conductor screws up, and if the conductor invents another reason for stopping, that’s the fastest way to lose the players’ respect. And it’s also the fastest way to GAIN our respect when they admit their mistake. To admit that they’re one of us is the best way to endear themselves to the players.

      He's not talking about current TikTok. That wasn't invented until 2016 (Google info). Maybe he's referring to the rhythm, as in the metronome sound?

      It was embarrassing for him to argue that he made up a reason to stop when it was, in fact, his fault the orchestra made a mistake. Especially in front of Bernstein.

    • @kristintripp967

      More embarrassing to then argue back when Leonard Bernstein is giving you feedback! 😳

    • @zlauriault
      @zlauriault 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was team-building for the orchestra with that conductor. Being called out could give him insight to Bernstein (which Bernstein choice to verbalize part of) and insight into himself but he shied away rather than treating it as the help it was.
      The thing about eyeing with musical masters is to not try to impress them. Do your best because experience gives them clear perception. If your best is really good they'll recognize it. If you try to fake it they'll recognize it. The fact they're working with you speaks for itself.

    • @zlauriault
      @zlauriault 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That guy should just listen. Bernstein was standing there confessing his own mistakes, and the fact Bernstein was wiring with him to help him learn speaks for itself.
