I wrote this up a couple of months ago, for another reactor. Since then I've refined it and updated it, since they've put out more videos, plus I had a couple of links that weren't quite right. If you're really interested in seeing how they came about, this is my researched "brief history." I thought about just making it into either an .rtf file or a .pdf file and uploading it so that people could download it at will, but there are parts of it that will have to be updated quite frequently, so I finally decided to just copy it into a comment when people (basically reactors new to their music) ask about how they got together, etc.
First of all, let me say once again that I love your reactions...so much fun! Thank you!
Then...if you want to read through the brief history and follow the rabbit trails, here you go...

    Home Free--A Brief History
    March 2019
by Linda A. Wingfield (Grandma's Gone Gaming)
    - - - - - - - - - - ***** - - - - - - - - - -
First of all, here are the group members that you will see in at least 99% of all the videos on TH-cam.
    Chris Rupp--Baritone (range: G♯1 - G♯5)
Chris was the founder of the group, back in 2000, along with his brother Adam. He's moved on, now...more about that below.
    Adam Rupp--Beatboxer (range: F♯1-A5)
    Rob Lundquist--Lead Tenor (range: D♯2 - F5)
    Austin Brown--High Tenor (range: G2 - D6)
    Adam Chance--Baritone (range: G1 - D♯5)
    Chance replaced Chris.
    Tim Foust--Bass (range: C♯1 - A5)
I'm a patron of both Chris Rupp and Home Free, and I'm going to try to make this fairly comprehensive, but shorter than a book.
Home Free is called a "vocal band," rather than just an a cappella group. They basically have a country sound, but they (seriously) can sing just about any style well--including opera.
Chris and Adam Rupp began Home Free in 2000, when Adam was a college freshman, and Chris had returned for his senior year after working at video game writing and testing for a while.
Here's Chris' intro on his own website.
    chrisruppofficial.com/?page_id=609
Adam is a pretty private person, and doesn't do a whole lot online. There are lots of fan videos on TH-cam, though, that showcase his fantastic beatboxing. Here's just Adam Rupp's Drum Solo from Kearney, MO, 06/16/2018, in which you'll also get to hear some of his actual vocal range...not in the traditional way, perhaps, but...yeah. He studied drums as well his own instrument (trumpet), by the way, so that he could do this kind of stuff credibly.
    th-cam.com/video/88u-Eb20FyM/w-d-xo.html
Also, this next, excellent video by Home Free was arranged by Adam. Be sure to read the intro he wrote for the description, and just wait until you hear the sound effects!
"Do You Hear What I Hear"
    th-cam.com/video/wIQQDYaoWpc/w-d-xo.html
Additionally, Adam usually sings on their Christmas songs/hymns, rather than beatboxing. He can fill in just about anywhere, in any song. This next video was released just before the end of 2018, to celebrate the upcoming new year.
    "Auld Lang Syne"
    th-cam.com/video/gFcSfqYqHs4/w-d-xo.html
Their sister Tristin is part of Chris' 7th Ave Band.
    www.7thaveband.com/about/tristin-rupp/
(That article also talks about her other endeavors, which are many.)
Chris and his siblings describe their mother Cindy, as a "musical savant." Here are two videos with her playing Chris' state-of-the-art piano, in his private studio (those are his guitars, too, and yes, he does play them...well).
    "The Lord's Prayer"
    th-cam.com/video/Flx_xOEkEro/w-d-xo.html
    "I'll Be Home for Christmas"
    th-cam.com/video/koLhseTr470/w-d-xo.html
Here's a WIKI article about about Home Free, and how it's developed since 2000, that's pretty well-written, but it's not been updated recently.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Free_(group)
As you can see by that article, it was in December 2013 (after three previous auditions) that Home Free was accepted into the Sing Off's Season 4, and ultimately won it. Also, you'll find information there about what the guys majored in at college, and how they switched members around a few times until they are at the current mix.
On March 18, 2016, Home Free announced that Chris would be "Movin' On." Here's that announcement video.
    th-cam.com/video/Hw1rjQln5O0/w-d-xo.html
On May 20, 2016, Home Free released this video of the original song ("Movin' On") Chris wrote (I think he wrote it, anyway...I saw something recently that looked like it was saying that someone else wrote it, but on his video description, he doesn't quote a different composer, so I'm not sure). At any rate, it was released fairly concurrently with the announcement video above:
    th-cam.com/video/GLZSnoUg_yI/w-d-xo.html
Here's the piano/vocal version of that song, that Chris had already released (that he more specifically advertises as being of good use for funerals, perhaps) on January 8, 2016.
    th-cam.com/video/PMeyLZgtWHI/w-d-xo.html
Here's a fan video of the speech Tim gave at the concert that was Chris' last appearance with Home Free. Be prepared for emotions, but also their typical senses of humor.
    th-cam.com/video/ke3nxAmu6m0/w-d-xo.html
Here's the first official music video presenting Adam Chance (usually called Chance, to differentiate from Adam Rupp).
    "Try Everything"

    "Colder Weather" (Official Music Video)
    th-cam.com/video/QtPkRkVjydA/w-d-xo.html
That Christmas, Chris released this one last Home Free video, which was arranged and mixed by Darren Rust (of The Blenders), who owns the studio where they cut their albums. This is all six of the guys.
    "What Child is This"
    th-cam.com/video/x9vK61ErUf0/w-d-xo.html
Chance has added his own style to the band, and has directed several of the newer videos, including these two, in which he has the lead. He's officially the Baritone, now, but he can fill in quite credibly as a bass, when Tim gets into his upper range. ;-)
    "I Can't Outrun You"
(directed by Chance, who also has the main acting role--no...the lady isn't his wife or girlfriend)
    th-cam.com/video/cgBYNQBHK8o/w-d-xo.html
    "Helplessly Hoping"
    th-cam.com/video/kQt9jKDCqHo/w-d-xo.html
Next, Chance "gets down" with the bass (near the end), after Tim "scales things up" into the tenor range (at the beginning). ;-)
    "Mayday"
    th-cam.com/video/znoV5gND9g0/w-d-xo.html
Here's the "more about that" from above, when I was talking about the styles of music they can sing.
Austin Brown soloing on "Bring Him Home" from Les Misérables

As for their all-around flexibility, check this out:

I could not possibly dig Austin's vocal abilities any moreso than in this song. He had me at his first verse of the Avi Kaplan version of Ring of Fire, which was how I stumbled across Home Free in the first place. That control and clarity seems to be effortlessly flawless!

Billy, on this one, Tim, the bass begins by singing tenor . . . go figure; and Chance, their baritone, covers bass near the end. Austin and Rob are their legit tenors. Tim is an octave beast.

You, my man, are a riot!! You make some pretty fun reactions & I love them!! The best line yet... "This song got me ready to fight for a relationship I'm not in"!! 😂😂😂 Awesome!
To your question... Networking!! The a capella world is one huge family. Most know each other's work. Most of the singers in all groups (including HF) have sung in other a capella groups. Other people have given you HF's history, but this explains how most of the groups find each other. Many have also met thru the Sing Off. It's like any other genre, they keep up & network with each other. Then one day... magic happens & it all clicks! 😉
Another fun reaction!! Thx so much!! Keep 'em coming!

Adam was one of the founders of Home Free, along with Chris and three others. Rob was singing in another group when they found him, one of them knew of Tim's work and tracked him down online, they were on a cruise ship as guest entertainers when they found Austin, who was company entertainment, Chance was the bass in another group, but has quite some range, so they brought him in as baritone in 2016, when Chris left. I think this is right, but am not 100% sure.

First off Home Free been together for over 20yrs, Adam, the beat boxer and Chris Rupp got it started ,Austin is the "TENOR" and Chris has since gone out on his own to write and do more Christian music. Adam Chance, the one who dropped the bass note on you is the one they choose to replace Chris, ROB is "THE BEARD" , The Tim Foust one of the most awesome a Capella basses, there are 5 or so right now Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix is one and nearly matches TIM. you can learn more at >> homefreemusic.com/ maybe even find them in concert near you and find out 1st hand.

Great reaction, Billy. Chris Rupp (baritone, hat guy in earlier videos) started the group in 2000-2001 with his brother Adam Rupp (beatboxer) and Matt Atwood (tenor/lead). They named the group after Matt’s grandfather’s boat because he gave them some financial support when they were getting started. They had several bass singers over the years. Others have given more info below about the changes in later years.
When Chris left in 2016 he started another group with his sister, Tristan, and others called 7th Ave. Here’s a song they did where they have a couple of guest singers, including one, Elliot Robison, who was the bass for Home Free for a bit before Tim Foust.

So glad you liked this. :) And to answer you. Those of us who sing can spot signals in others peoples voices. For instance, the way you laugh makes me think that, if you did sing, you might have a pretty strong upper range cause it's pretty high. ( and I believe you could do it. Most CAN learn to sing, it's just more difficult than someone that has a natural talent for it. ) Now, that doesn't mean the person will have that, but it's enough to go hey, why don't we try something? What songs do you know? Just to point out, I am not sure about all of them, but I know Austin and Tim are both classically trained ( Do Home Free Bring Him Home if you want to see these guys absolutely wail on some musical theater ) Now the second part of this, they were extremely lucky to have run into Tim, Austin, and Rob, like they did. This is really rare, but I am SO glad they did. Oh.....and I'm not sure if I mentioned this on this channel, This isn't a song, it's my favorite video of Tim being hilarious. th-cam.com/video/cx3XDit5sf8/w-d-xo.html but you could do that with one of their songs. maybe since Helplessly Hoping is so short ? just an idea. I love your reactions :)

*cracks knuckles* how they met... The band started off with Adam (beatboxer), Rob (tenor on 2nd verse) and Chris (in cowboy hats in other videos). I forget how Tim got pulled in. But those 4 were featured on a cruise ship and met Austin (Tenor during chorus). A few years ago Chris left the band and was replaced by Chance. You will see Chance in their video of House Party as an extra which was done before Chris left the group.

adam rupp and his brother chris rupp started the group in college, then added rob, then came tim and they were performing on a cruise ship and austin was employeed by the cruise line. they had another member i don't know his name, but when he left they contacted austin. Then after the sing off chris rupp left and they got adam chance, or chance as they call him. you really need to do the sing off performances starting with cruise and end it with colder weather.

Home Free was started in college with the beat boxer and his brother, they have had other members along the way but after the sing off, the brother went on his own and they brought in another bass since Tim Foust covers so many octaves, just a general heads up but they do have a wiki of all members. Two of my faves are "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with Kenny Rogers and "Zombies vs Hillbillys" on the singoff
