Agreed. To me it's an Industry that's been "taken over" . The marketing is pretty much identical to the car industry. Parasites and sharks abound.
$9000 bikes and no one bats and eye. Oh,can't afford it? ?? Huh.Then make more money is the standard response.

Great review as always. I’ve always been impressed with the Winspace Hyper 50 wheels. I have a pair of the previous generation. I’ve done approximately 12,000 km & today haven’t had a problem. They’ve gone through their fair share of hard punishment & must say they still roll true, perform well & fast. I highly recommend. Great value for money. Pleasant riding 👍

I have a set of Lun Grapid wheels and I had a very similar problem to you when I took them out of the box. The protective shipping end cap somehow pulled the freehub body off when I removed it and sent pawls all over the place. Thankfully I was able to find them all, so no harm done, but it wasn't a great introduction to the wheelset. Otherwise they are absolutely fantastic

thanks again for the previous and current in depth reviews of these wheels. I have been riding the previous disc hypers for about a year and very happy with them....interesting to hear about the spokes making noise rather than the disc pads...descending in the alps this summer was horrible but not sure how to tell where the noise was coming from...pretty sure it was the discs though...have been running tubeless with no issues - currently on veloflex tyres which have in my mind outperformed others i have tried...no need to upgrade to latest hypers but would recommend them.

I recall reading in a bicycle trade magazine quite some time ago that a radial pattern was faster to produce by the manufacturers. No time wasted fiddling with crossing spokes. Also, notice the straight gage spokes on a radial pattern or low spoke count wheel. Thicker spokes make it easier to true the wheel. The spoke does not twist as it’s tightened all that much. VAR makes bladed spoke holding tools to eliminate this in wheel building.
The Mavic Helium Tubular Wheelset from the late 90s was a good example that started the concept. Mavic was shocked at market demand at a premium price point. The looks and spoke pattern captured attention and the marketing boys went into high gear. Everyone jumped on-board and started producing wheel sets soon after.
Prior we would have a bespoke set crafted to meet our objectives; hill climb, stiff criterium hoops, stout touring wheels, all designed for our specific weight.
So it seems the Winspace Hyper rear could use a cross pattern on the disk side to add a measure of safety in having both sides assume braking. Ideally, the pulling spokes radiating to the rear and braking toward the front.
It appears they were designed for ease of manufacture and looks relative to the disk side. Nice to see them make some of your suggested improvements, perhaps a few more and the set will be perfect.

    • @squiresuzuki
      @squiresuzuki ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well certainly rim brake wheels at least, 2:1 (triplet) lacing is a great way to achieve equal spoke tension between the two sides of a rear wheel. Having radial NDS spokes is simply a consequence of that, I'm not sure how you would lace it without radial NDS. So I don't think there's much of a conspiracy or anything, for a given spoke count it genuinely is superior for rim brake wheels. Of course with disc brakes it's a bit different though, there's still the benefit of closer spoke tension but then there's the trade off with torsion through the hub as PT explains.

My bike was stolen a week ago and replacing it will be strain, but with the information I have learned from you on this and other videos I will be able to buy wheels on a budget that are very good. I also learned why my "brakes" squealed no matter what I did with my previous bike. Furthermore, I never realized how hubs effect the wheels. I thought as long as they were straight pull. Hi, great video as always. I have the first version of these and I'm pretty pleased with them.
I have a question about the Lateral Stiffness Test, I would've thought a higher stiffness is better for energy transfer and more efficient, but you also seem to say the modified spoke angle is an improvement, but this had resulted in a less stiff wheel, which I would imagine is less efficient? I know zipp are pushing their more efficient/less harsh wheels, so i kind of get the idea behind less stiffness. Thanks.

To me the biggest difference vs the old is the much better crosswinds stability. The D45 with 46+54 feels almost as crosswind proof as the old 38. That's major considering the way taller rims. I feel the stiffness is greater as well but could be just a feeling since the older model I've used for a year and the differences in rim height.
As for the less comfort due to stiffness, my D45 feels VERY comfortable with 25 front + 28 rear tubeless GP5000 S TR.

  • @Winchuff

A spoke that does not pass through the axis of the wheel is always tangential to a circle with _some_ radius.
The concise way to characterise the profile geometry influencing torque stiffness is by effective moment arm, not by angle.

Very nice review, love to see more of these incl outdoor aero testing. About road tubeless: I tried it for a few years now. With regular sealant the pressure is way too high. It will get you home but that's about it. If you pump up the tire back to the high pressure the sealant just pops out. With Stan's race sealant, with chunky particles in it, it seems to work better. Would be nice to see a real world comparison for rolling resistance. I think to have the same comfort level one should lower the pressure with an inner tube vs tubeless. Then the difference in rolling resistance might be even higher. Nice topic for the future of your awesome channel.

The others will all be ceased up and impossible to true and tension without removing and replacing more spokes. Try and buy a replacement axle when that one wears out. It will because the freehub is not weather sealed and the inside of that freehub accumulates gunk so fast. Perform well, but be prepared for costs

Paul, They come with spare spokes but they're a lot less likely to break than steel spokes (at least in a road application when you're not smashing into rocks.) If for some reason an unattended child has access to a chainsaw and decided to cut all your spokes... don't worry, we have replacements in stock and ready to ship (including in 4 warehouses around the globe.) Moving on... the freehub is weather sealed with a rubber gasket. Replacement axles? We've got you. Our 2023 Freehub body works with a pair of HYPER wheels from 2020. We try to keep things as backwards compatible as possible. For the record: I think you know your way around a bike, you're a fan of brass nipples and you have dealt with your fair share of bad designs... but I think in our case "maintenance nightmare" is a bit harsh. As PT proved in his video, we don't think we're perfect and we're open to criticism so we can improve, but keeping things in perspective keeps our product development roadmap on track. 🙌🙌🙌

1: I am based in Australia and our roads are really crap, the wheels transmitt a lot of vibration . Because of the stiffness, on bumpy corners I find that I am slower than I was on my old Roval 40mm wheels with steel spokes. Maybe the fixed spoke angles will make the wheels less harsh ?
2: Totally agree that there should be retaining caps incase of spoke failure.
3: The dust caps should be made more secure, I have accedentally pulled the cluster off the hub.
4: It would be good if there is a option to purchase steel bearings instead of the ceramic. The original bearings only lasted a year. .
It is interesting to see that the new version of the Hyper 50 the front wheel profile is smaller. Hopefully this will improve the crosswind performance for lighter riders

16:33 I would like to clarify some issues here, the offset by a fixed force done in the TM-1 is just a relative number and it is not linear compared to true spoke tension.
As a wheel builder, I would highly suggest you to make a spoke tension tool calibrator (it's easy to do and not expensive at all)! Pop out a spoke, measure the TM-1 offset for true 40-140kgf spoke tensions in 10 kgf steps, than calculate the actual tension of the wheel from that chart.
The end result will be worse than in your chart and the +-5% is a bit high anyway (in my opinion), thou sadly it is usual for factory built wheels. Usually I aim for +-1% when building and +-2% max unless the rim has some defects (aluminium ones usually worse in this case at their seam).

front wheel has a greater potential aerodynamic gain but this is limited by steering instability in crosswinds. rear wheel is not so limited so is often deeper despite smaller gains. Is it between the spokes? The butterfly weave leaves more material at the spokes than in the gaps between the spokes. Therefore when the rim is "stretched" when the wheel is built, there are some undulations of the rim as it passes from the reinforced spoke areas to the non-reinforced "between spoke" areas. It is very subtle though. If what you're describing is something different, email me ASAP. joe at winspace dot cc. :) Always here.
