    This is a review of the Winspace Hyper 65. The Hyper 50 wheels have long been considered to the best in class and this is an aerofoil extension of those wheels. The wheels have been ridden in all weathers for over 4000km and in that time they have had no faults.
    Aerodynamic performance is good, they are slightly faster than the 50. The deepened rim does increase the inertia of the wheel. From very low speeds the increased inertia is noticeable. The deepened section also results in worse stability than the Hyper 50.
    Overall, a very well made wheel, aerodynamic performance is good.

    Ive been running the hyper 65mm rim on my TT bike since Dec 2020 and done about 7000 km on them. Despite the instability on windy days, they have been rapid. Also the roads where I live are awful, and these wheels have been essentially bulletproof.

    Very well done. The state of the art for consumer-grade carbon wheels has long past the hype that was the nature of the beast when they became available. Now such nuances such as inertia, among other refinements, will be the difference that will separate the punters from the wankers - and there will always be (for better or worse) a market by and for wankers. For those who know, appreciate, and can make use of quality kit, Winspace and the rest represent the next level. You didn't mention cost, but it's assumed that your test wheels are priced for the average human or athlete rider to reasonably afford. One more time, from my own experience, those hubs look very decent, and I would bet a dollar/pound/euro that they're made by NovaTech since they are the big player in the hub game, and they make for almost everybody. Thanks again, and thanks to your hairdresser for giving you the good blow.

    Currently TRIFOX wheels have taken over at my house. Don't have a lot of miles on them yet, so we'll see. I do like the Winspace wheels quite a lot, just came down to price for me. Not a pro rider, nor chasing marginal gains so Zipp and the like are of no interest to me. Next set of wheels are hopefully Winspace. Would love to give them a go. Much like the Japanese did years ago, the Chinese are learning and improving the quality of manufacturing quickly. Cheap or substandard Chinese goods are rapidly disappearing. Thanks, great channel.

    Inertia is a thing to deal with for sure. If I go from a regular old shallow wheel to a deep wheel, the bike steers slower. It absolutely feels like it wants to go straight and requires more effort to move. You adjust to it, but if we can get the deep wheels to handle like a shallow rim, we'll have a winner. 1400 grams isn't 1400 grams unfortunately, but a pen is a pen.

    I bought the Hyper 50's after your review a couple years back.....they've been solid after 5,000+ miles and my favorite aero wheelset that I've owned. I recently bought a pair of Lun 30's for windy conditions, as I've had a few instances where I nearly got blown off the road with the Hypers in 20-30 mph winds. So far, the Lun 30's handle the wind extremely well (I've actually had 27mm Eastons that would get a bit twitchy with sudden lateral gusts on the front wheel). I'd be curious how the Hyper 50's and Lun 30's compare aerodynamically, not that the 30's are really an aero wheel per se, as I don't really seem to be too much slower overall. I was considering the Hyper 65's for TT's, but after this I think I'll pass unless they improve them.

    • @michaelrowave
      @michaelrowave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is this wind problem due to the wide side walls affecting by perpindicular gusts? The solid plane does become more of a wing or a sail than a spoke I suppose but I have never owned a fancy carbon/ceramic grade wheelsets. Also, when it gets really windy its time to turn around and not ride for me. That rim is definately close to wing size for model planes I imagibne it could be a real issue.

    • @drouleau
      @drouleau 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelrowave Yep. One time I clearly remember coming around a 90 degree curve to the left....tailwind to my back before the curve, and solid crosswind (a good 20-25+ mph wind) into the curve. It was an open, windswept area (in southern California at the time), and I had to slow way down to avoid getting pushed off the road. Moderate wind conditions aren't too bad with the Hyper 50's though.

    • @adriankok3095

      Hey I’ve been eyeing to get a pair of lun wheels not the hyper version. How would you rate them since you own both of the rim? Is there any big difference? I would assume hyper is more stiff as it comes with carbon spokes and aside of that any other feels you can tell? Thanks for the reply!

    • @drouleau
      @drouleau 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adriankok3095 Well, I certainly don't feel like I'm riding a sub-par wheelset with the Luns, but it really depends what you're looking for. The Hyper 50's are my all-time favorite wheels and just "feel" fast on the flats and the climbs. The Lun 30's that I have are great for an all-purpose training wheelset. I'm sure comparing say the Lun 45's to the Hyper 50's would be a more accurate comparison, but for me the 150 gram weight penalty (for the rim brake version which I have) would be a no-go. To me what makes the Hypers great are the aero + weight benefits. If you're primarily riding on flatter ground though, then the Lun 45's would likely be a fine wheelset and plenty stiff enough.

    • @adriankok3095
      @adriankok3095 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drouleau Thanks so much for the reply man! Guess the wheel is good enough for someone like me who do not previous own any carbon wheels. just hoped that the wheel stay true and safe. i usually ride a mixed terrain but since i am not racing or so i think the lun might be a better choice for a first carbon wheelset.

    There's definitely something in the low inertia wheels, I've used a pair of 60mm carbon wheels for the past two years and recently switched back to some shallow alloy wheels which are overall much heavier than the carbon pair but still accelerate noticeably faster. However even despite this I think I'd choose the deeper wheels as they just look so good.

    • @InS1Nuate
      @InS1Nuate ปีที่แล้ว

      A shallower, heavier wheel has higher inertia than a lighter, deeper wheel. For a disc I = 0.5 m r^2 . mass increases, r increases as centre of mass of a segment of the wheel is further from the centre. So maybe you're just fitter if the wheels feel nippier!

      If you focus only on price, yoeleo is the clear winner. Lots of people value the familiarity of Specilized/Merida and so are quite happy paying premium. It really just depends on the things you value.
      If you are looking at price as some kind of indicator of performance and quality, then buy Yoeleo.
      I'm not sure if it was Hambini who madethe comparison, but, cycling equipment sales and marketing is just like audiophile products. Once you get beyond an obvious threshold in price/quality, it's splitting hairs to make a sale.

    You mentioned for a crit setup 50 front, 65 back for a balance of inertia and aero. But wouldn‘t it be smarter the other way round. 65 in the front being more exposed to the wind and 50 back for the faster acceleration? Or am I missing something? (besides this setup not being very common and not considering stability in cross winds)

    • @Hambini
      @Hambini  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This depends on how you want to look at it. The front wheel would give you the instability, so it's better IMO to go for a shallower front. It's less out and out aerodynamic but you won't care about that when you end up in a hedge. For the rear, the airflow characteristics are quite different and you have much more weight over the back wheel so even in gusty conditions, you could run a 65mm+ wheel. There will always be an element of personal preference

    • @indonesiaamerica7050
      @indonesiaamerica7050 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to overcome "resistance" as a package. You don't accelerate faster by moving weight to the back just because it's the drive wheel. The issue is actually where the wheels are in the "system". Which is to say you have to test to optimize each wheel. Total weight is total weight and shifting it around in the wheels doesn't matter. It does matter in theory if you have a choice to move weight from the rims to the hubs but again these are not binary choices we're dealing with unless you're an engineer starting from scratch.
      Take a look at the Specialized Roval differentiated wheels introduced with the Tarmac SL7. That's the kind of differentiation I expect to see. Generally though the rule of thumb is to go big in the back simply because of stability issues and riders can usually tolerate a deeper rim in the back than in the front for a road race and often for time trials too. But it also depends on the rider and the frame geometry.

      @@Hambini Fancy doing an analysis on how many watts it takes to spin up a 50 vs a 60? I did it a while back for 1.6kg vs 1kg and assumed all mass at 350mm radius. Accelerating 20-30mph over 8 seconds requires additional 4 watts to add the rotational energy (I think). Considering at my weight I have to put in about 600-700 W it feels like, if aero claims are to be believed, you would save more than that in aero over the entire lap rather than those one or two turns.

      Aerodynamics are not good and negate any speed savings on road bikes due to lower inertia. They also have lower lateral stiffness compared to steel (I think about a third less?)
      They have a place on mtb and maybe some gravel applications where acceleration, deceleration and a smoother ride are appreciated. If you want the low weight, cush and don't mind subtandard aero and high price then go for it

    If you are a Light rider, without much power, Low rotational inertia would matter... But if you are a Heavy rider, with Lots of Power, acceleration and Top speed are not your problem! Hence, If you are Heavy rider, I would error on the side of Strength and Durability/Resilience. Heavy riders are probably a Lot harder on components, especially wheels, than lighter riders, so gaining a little weight could give addled longevity and security/safety without necessarily compromising their speed and acceleration advantage over lighter riders... Anyway, my two cents... *Also a heavier rider might be Better on 65's vs a lighter rider would be better on 50's...
