- Episode 130 - FOOD SHOP in Spain Supermarket, Torrevieja - Between the Lakes with Mike & Yvonne
We have a walk to our local Hiperber Supermarket. On the way, we pass the new development in Altos del Limonar to build a new Pets World superstore. The La Hoya project is also well underway and in particular, the Lagoonas Rosa housing development.
We do our shop at Hiperber Supermarket and spend just over 50 euros.
We carry it home and check out our purchases.

Im 74 i remember when all glass bottles were returned so could get our deposit back and all milk bottles were washed and returned to the milkman.
Hi Denise, yes I remember getting money back for our pop bottles and my mum used to rinse out the milk bottles and put them back on the step for the milkman to collect....how times have changed. Thanks for watching and best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Another fantastic video guys. It’s great to see what real life is like in Spain. Thanks so much for posting this, I really enjoyed it. ❤
Hi Stuart, very pleased you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Thanks for introducing the CartCam to the world! 😊👍
Yes loving that x.
Hi Sven, thank you for noticing the production values of our episode...lol. I am not the first to use this technique but it's a great way of giving the viewer an all-encompassing feel of the moment. "CartCam", I love it.

Lovely Video tour round the Supermarket, always nice to see how different foods and prices are in Spain. ❤ xx

Yep, another great video by you both 🙂 Information is always top notch too!
Hi Scott, thanks for watching and for your nice comment. Best wishes Mike and Yvonne.
I appreciate that you have shown that there is so much sun in your house that you both need sunglasses. Spain is perfect country for me, living in South East Asia now. I am packing my stuff and going to Spain soon. Thank you guys, good luck!
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, sometimes we forget we have them on. We should have taken them off, we will try and remember next time. Thanks for your comment. Best wishes Mike and Yvonne.
Loved this video, thanks for making and sharing
Hi Tina, glad you enjoyed this one. It's proving very popular. Thanks for watching and all the best from Mike and Yvonne.
I can’t remember where I saw it but someone was asking where you lived and you gave them quite a detailed reply.
Hi Susanne, we don't remember, but we do tell people what area we live in "Altos del Limonar" but it is an extensive urbanisation with 100's of houses that all look the same. We are careful not to give away too much...Thanks for caring, Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
@@BetweenTheLakes Oh that’s good to hear. Hope you are enjoying life. We have done a similar thing to you. We retired to South West France 15 years ago and love it.
Muy buena compra.Disfrutad y que sigáis haciendo estos estupendos videos.Abrazos de Maribel.😉

Hi Zareena, thanks for watching. We hope you enjoyed your trip, maybe we will bump into you sometime in the future. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
The Hiperber is our local supermarket also. A lot of the unbranded produce in there is really good, and works out much cheaper than back in the uk...
Hi Rob, yes it's great to have it just around the corner. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
Yes you can't beat your local supermarket it's full of surprises it handy for bits and pieces local bread/cheese and wine's etc might get Belhaven best?
Hi, thanks for watching and for your comments and information. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
Once a week shopping in uk and i like you realky take time to see prices
Hi, thanks for watching, all the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Torrevieja Friday market is our go to( particularly the Bodega man( for me as my wife does not drink) followed by the Food Co but as the road is closed might be Carrefour now. As we are arriving late on Saturday may try Zoco or Lemon Tree markets on Sunday and possibly head south into Murcia region for our big shop if we can't wait until Monday. From the video, you are like us and try to live in Spain on the same budget as you have in the UK. As always a great quality video.
Hi Iain, thanks for watching. We have a video due soon on Lemon Tree Market. We love going there and it's sooo cheap. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
I buy a few csns of beer and sometimes split it between 2. And in uk more growing veg etc. I take hours in supermarket now 2 hours plus
Hi, thanks for watching and for your comment. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Loved Spain twice in fuengarola Pablo Lucia by round about horses
Hi Dawn, thanks for watching. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
I have bought Heinz Baked Beans For €1 in Carrefour, Great Video folks
Hi Keith, thanks for watching. Yes, Carrefour have a "UK department don't they?, with all UK goods like Marmite, HP Sauce and Branston Pickle and such like. Just a little bit further for us but we have been lots of times. We have bought mainly household items and electrical goods there, massive selection and great prices. Thanks for your comment and all the best from us....
Just found your channel, and I have subscribed. ❤

Hello Mike & Yvonne 👋 very interesting shopping video 👍 a very reasonably priced shop....a little of most everyday items for a typical week. I do like a Mercadona , my favourite food shop in Espana 😊 A tiny tiny comparison, my local Northumberland farmshop. One cauliflower last weekend was £3.89p ! 😳🙂....I must be mad! Nice to see you both on Andys Lemon Tree Market video....hope the 10 euro challenge went well ! Have a great week in Torrevieja! 🍻
Hi Graham, yes the Lemon Tree market is coming up soon, next but one I think. That is an expensive cauliflower, we got two for one euro, and one of them was pink!!....lol.
Thanks for watching, All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
@BetweenTheLakes Brill, thanks Mike for the reply.....I know ! When I saw those pink cauli's for a euro each, I just sighed ! I do try and support local folk, but there comes a point when you may have to reconsider! Have a great Monday! 🍻
As my local supermarket Hiperber I have always found to be good value for most things. Although they run out of fresh milk often. If you want to guarantee fresh milk always go in the morning.
Hope you are both well?
I missed you by two days when you came out I went back to a cold and wet uk
Hi David, hope you are well. Yes we like Hiperber, it's our local and the produce is good value. Maybe we'll catch you next time. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Thanks Mike and Yvonne for the great Torrevieja videos, I'm comparing those prices to out here in Antalya, unbelievably Turkish prices are the same as Spain now or even more, whereas a few years ago almost half price in comparison. I suppose the same can be said about Spanish shopping prices compared to UK, used to be much cheaper. take care both
Hi Youtubis, Yes, we remember Turkey supermarkets being a lot cheaper than UK. We used to go to Migros. I think the gap is closing in all the European countries. Thanks for watching, all the best Mike and Yvonne.
¡Hola vecinos! Bueno, casi vecinos 😊. It's the first time I see one of your videos, and it turns out you're featuring my new home: Torrevieja!
Hola Roma, eso es bueno. Gracias por mirar y esperamos que haya disfrutado viendo su nueva casa. Todo lo mejor de parte de Mike e Yvonne.
Yo también espero que os vaya todo bien. Si os veo y os reconozco, me acercaré a saludaros.
Thanks for another informative post, cheaper than the UK overall I would say, it goes to show you the tax we pay here on the booze? Have you ever done a video on the cost of your travel to and from your house in Spain and Yorkshire? All the best Andy.
Hi Andy, thanks for watching. We haven't done a cost of travel to and from Torrevieja but we have done the journey several times. Maybe next time we'll focus on the cost of the journey. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
I think spain is expensive now in the supermarkets, there isn't as much choice as UK ones. Our shooping over here in UK is cheaper than Consum Mercadona etc. Althought spanish markets are good for fruit etc
Hi Bella, thanks for watching. Yes, we think the gap between the UK and Spanish supermarket prices is reducing to almost the same and sometimes more in some products. But as you say, the markets like LemonTree and Torrevieja Friday market have amazingly low fruit and veg prices. We have a video soon about the Lemon Tree Market. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Great value guys compared to Ireland and the uk , good to see yous back in 2nd home 😊
Hi Derek, thanks for watching. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Prices are really good compared to the Netherlands! Great little shopping haul 😊
Thanks for watching Janny, hope you are well. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne
excellent video.. just for ifo...... we were im budweis czech rep... of course beer drinking... there is supermarket called kaufland ex lidl gruop,,,. we filled the car up with euro 150..... but. 6 cases of real budweis beer, shopping, so cheap, u can believe. half the price in spain...never buy the originoal, but their brand,,,, baked beans .030c cornflakes ,0,70 etc etc etc.. instant coffe nescafe stuff 1.00 euro etc etc. bread roll for 5 euro cent.... in austria a bread roll is 13c.... amazing. thanks for the update and looking forward to doing a quiz eveing some time . cheers for now chris and daniela
Hi Chris and Daniela, hope you are well. Yes, very wise to buy supermarkets own brand, big savings always. Never been to Czech Republic, would be interesting to go there but it's a Schengen country and would take up our precious days in Spain....Maybe one day. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Aldi have fruit bread for £1-15pm, TAKE care and all the best. 😊😊😊
Hi Shane, thanks for watching and for the tip....All the best Mike and Yvonne.
Mike and Yvonne, Thanks for all your video's they are very informative, interesting and fun! Really grateful for the updates on La Hoya as I am a neighbour in JDM13. You also mentioned you do your big shop in Mercadona can you advise which one is it? Colm
Hi Colm, we go mainly to the San Luis Mercadona but sometimes the one by Habaneras. Thanks for watching, all the best Mike and Yvonne.
Hi mike and Yvonne i have just come across your channel and enjoyed watching you go shopping. Do you live in Spain full time?
We live on Lamarina urb is that close to were you are? Keep doing what your doing love it. Tamsie ❤
Hi Tamsie, we live part time in Torrevieja in Urb Altos del Limonar. We have a property there but we are 90 dayers, so are non-residents, or as we prefer, second home owners. We have done almost 200 videos all about Costa Blanca so please have a watch and see if you like the others....Thanks for watching and for your comment. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
In Barcelona last year, one Orange was about 60 p and cauliflower was around £2.50....lots is dearer than uk...soap powder...ready meals...but we don't buy those...Catalan prices highest in spain.
Hi Tom, thanks for watching. That's interesting and sounds expensive in Barcelona. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
As are the taxes, both direct and indirect ones.
@@moltderenouthanks for watching….
Enjoy the video, thanks.
Thanks for watching Zoya, hope you are well. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
having lived on limonar, not wishing to be morbid, but on the parcel of land between the BMW garage & the bars, was "centrocan" pet store that burnt down in 2006. we were woken during the night to the sound of the fire & emergency services. probably less than 2 years old.
Hi Mark, thanks for watching. Yes, it sounds like a horrific incident, we had heard about it before. There is still nothing there on that piece of land. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Hi am in UK heinz baked beans are £1.40 a tin every were at moment , also your not boring just get some silly people think better anyone else, also hi from East Yorkshire as well
Hi Catherine, thanks for watching and for your nice comments. Say hello to the East from us….Best wishes Mike and Yvonne.
Enjoying catching up with your videos after recently discovering the channel. I fancy getting a place over there now early retired, either on the 90 day rule or permanent. Are the places suitable for single people too regarding ameneties. Best wishes.
Hi Karen, thanks for watching. There are many urbanisations with plenty to do, with shops and bars to go to, with a great social life. It all depends what you want....Best bet is to come over and explore the areas with a good estate agent like Casas Espania who will show you round and give you good advice. Good luck and best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Do you cook much ??
How often would you eat out on average a week.
I love breakfast/brunch out but do like to cook dinner at our apartment .
Mercadona is great for food shopping .
I bought an airfryer which has been good and nice salads .
So fresh milk always has a very long date on it sometimes 3 weeks I'm not sure how fresh it is ?? Xx
Hi Dierdre, thanks for watching. Yvonne cooks quite a lot. Yes, we enjoy lots of salads. We eat out about 3 times a week. We have an air fryer and use it every day. It's made the oven redundant. Thanks for your comments, all the best Mike and Yvonne.
Don't use Hipper Supermarket much , do my Shopping in New Marcendona in La Siesta,
Did not set up Camera on Front Terrace, I recently Glaze my Front Terrace in with Aluminium, 3550, with Dark glass, and Mozzies Screens on all Doors and Windows, Yes Milk is more expensive in Spain 🇪🇸 than in Ireland and UK 🇬🇧.
Home in Ireland for Hospital appointment, but hopefully out for Winter months in November till Easter 😊
Hi Philip, thanks for watching, hope you are well and your hospital appointment goes well. Might bump into you in November. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Hi Mike and Yvonne enjoyed the shopping video, more of the same please, have you retired your bikes
Hi, thanks for watching. The bikes are still very much a part of our daily lives in Torrevieja but the supermarket is close so we walked on this one. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
I shop at lidl both in the UK and while in spain, there is not much difference in the cost of my weekly shop
Hi Lee, thanks for watching and for your comment, best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Fresh gas at Mercadona 0 sugar free instead of Fanta lemon, Mercadona home delivery too
Hi Tom, thanks for watching, yes we do our main shop at Mercadona but Hiperber, for us, is great and within walking distance so good for a top-up shop. The prices are good and the quality is good. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
Good to see the viewing numbers are still climbing Mike 👍. We're sat beside the log burner again here in Derby & its flipping freezing 😢. Enjoy the tapas route tomorrow. Not that I'm jealous 🙁. ATB Simon & Sue.
Hi Simon, yes, it was a good day out. We managed 12 bars so quite an outing. Finished off with a couple down at the Conceirto and a nice brandy when I got home. Best stay off it now for a day or two....All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
@@BetweenTheLakes Great to hear it went well. 👍. Made us laugh when you said best stay off it now. After 12 bars, Concierto & a brandy a break is probably a good idea 😄. We're looking forward to your vlog from the day. ATB Simon & Sue.
Heinz baked beans for sale in Spain are now made in Spain. That is why the cost is lower than you would think.
Hi Stratman, thanks for watching and for the information. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
Oh wow, getting so excited and can’t wait to get to Spain. In the San Francisco Bay Area that grocery haul would be 200+ USD. For example I paid 7 for a head of lettuce the other day at the Japanese market… cannot wait!
Hi Sean, thanks for watching. Go to one of the markets if you get chance and but two big cabbages for one euro. The prices for fruit and veg are great. We have a video soon on Lemon Tree Market. All the best Mike and Yvonne.
If you think about it from the perspective of your american salary, you have to take into account that the standard of living in Spain is high for the Spaniards themselves. In Spain the salaries are low, there is a very high unemployment rate (even the youth unemployment rate is high), taxes are high. I, as a Spaniard, don´t recommend you to move to Spain.
@@isabelrayas3286 Hi Isobel, thanks for watching and for your perspective on this, you make an interesting point. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Our weekly shop in Mercadonna is between 100 to 120 euros. However this includes pet supplies for four cats and a fussy dog, that only eats Chicken lol.Plus tons of wine and beer x.
Hi Linda, thanks for watching. I am now having illusions of your dog eating chicken washed down with lots of wine and beer, but I'm sure it's not the dog that drinks it....lol. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
The Guvnor red wine! 👍👌
Lol, your prices seem high compared to what I pay in the UK.
Hi, thanks for watching. We think the gap is closing if not closed on some items.
@@BetweenTheLakes ♥
What is the name of your complex and the area want to see if there are any holiday let’s available thank you
Hi Clare, we are in Altos del Limonar in Torreta 3. It's a large area to the left of the CV905 road coming out of Torrevieja. Other close-by areas are El Chaparal, San Luis, La Siesta, El Salado, Jardin del Mar. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Thank you
Are there any farmers markets, any bakeries any butchers?
Hi Denise, there are some butchers around Torrevieja, there's Reeves in San Luis and another in Quesada. There are the supermakets where they bake bread and cakes etc. on a daily basis. The markets stalls are run by the local farmers who produce the really good value produce. Thanks for watching, best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
I think that lot used to be a mexi mundo
Hi, thanks for watching. The Mexi Mundo used to be above The Porter House near the Pharmacy, and now has moved to Torrevieja on Calle de Pedro Lorca, thanks for your comment, All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Apparently you don't have curbside pick up of recycling?
Hi Kathy, thanks for watching. We take our rubbish to the appropriate recycling bin. there are lots of them close by, so it is no problem to dispose of it. Thanks for your comment, all the best, Mike and Yvonne.
hi mike yvonne love the granny cart , id have had a full face mask on , and maybe some camo net over me, just joking guys ,infact with your healthy eating food you could almost be fitness addicts, with all the walking bike riding, dont see an ounce of fat on either of you. love to see vids of normal life , great promoters you are can not get enough of you guys,
Hi Martin, thanks for watching lots of our videos. We appreciate your nice comments and hope you can get through all of them... there's a lot. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
is "johnsons" still on limonar??
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and for your comment. No, Johnsons went about a year ago it is now just about to become a gym. It has been a shop but was unfortunately unsuccessful. All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
🤣🤣The red beers are not as strong...only 5.6% ? Crikey...Yvonne's malty ones must be bordering on the Tennents Super scale then
Hi, thanks for watching and for your comment, Yvonne can drink me under the table....Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
'I don't remember buying empty bottles'..... 🙃
Hi Kevin, thanks for watching and for your comment. Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne
only thing cheap thing is the beer,
And wine!
Hi Colin, thanks for watching. we think the gap between UK and Spanish prices is closing....all the best, Mike and Yvonne
More expensive beans after Brexit. Who’d have thought
Hi Lesley, thanks for watching and for your comment, quite funny....Best wishes, Mike and Yvonne.
Best not to put your address on social media for safety reasons. Do with private message.
Hi Susanne, thanks for watching. We are not sure where you have seen our address? Best wishes Mike and Yvonne
Don't buy any Heinz products any more far too expensive these days

Why does the man repeat everything she says....
Hi Bella, thanks for watching. Yes, he does doesn't he, maybe if enough people complain he'll stop doing it....All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
Just go the the Caribbean if you want eye watering prices, a small Colman’s mustard £7, ordinary white loaf, up to £10, jar of jam £11, one lettuce, ‘Roman’ £6, one beefsteak tomato £7. Truly butt puckering prices.
Hi, thanks for watching and for the tip - "Expensive shopping in the Caribbean" All the best, Mike and Yvonne.
@@trishaberger-black70 That is so expensive and no wonder you couldn't continue to be there. Seems such a shame for such a beautiful place to lose residents for that reason. Thanks for watching, Mike and Yvonne.
