We went to mercadona every other day last year on holiday and tried different wines each time. Not once did we pay more than 3 quid or get a bad wine. The quality of the food and drink was amazing. Thanks for posting
@Paul-eb4jp is that the one that used to be around 90cents to 110 a bottle? Sound familiar, and we used to drink it as well, before we started paying a little more for the syrah. Thanks for watching and the comment 😊
Sincerely, I am Spanish learning English. And the wines of that price range are really not good at all. Most of us use them to cook or like a day to day drink if there is nothing better. I mean they are no bad. But for us the difference with them and something a little better with no much of increase in the price.
@@mara_jade021 Hi and thank you for watching and the comment. We don’t actually buy this very cheap wine ourselves, we like some of Mercadonas other wine (actually, still cheap, we like the Uvas Syrah). We did show these cheap bottles and cartons because in lots of other countries it’s difficult to find wine (even like this wine) at under 10€. We just wanted to show people how cheap (and still drinkable) the wine is here compared to other countries. 🍷
I love this video, guys! Thanks for making it. I’m sitting here in Birmingham today three weeks after you posted this. It’s great to see. You reminded me to be on the lookout for the coconut ice cream in the coconut shells which I saw as you panned the ice cream section. Can’t believe the olive oil is now cheaper here in the US than in Spain and most of it is coming from Spain or Italy. We like to get the manchego cheese when in Spain since it is usually 3X the price over here. Surprised to see Hellmans mayo. Love some of the British English vs American English words you use ie trolley vs shopping cart, ice lollies instead of ice pops😂. Have a great day and thanks for showing everyone around.
Spain is the biggest olive oil producer in the world, but has been experiencing the worst draught in decades, which is why olive oil prices have recently multiplied. Even now, you can get a 1 liter bottle of extra virgin olive oil for less than 10 bucks. Could you please tell me exactly where in the US you can get Spanish extra virgin olive oil for less than 10 bucks?? Cheers!
@@1650million Hi just got your comment. Just outside NYC in April onLong Island I got extra virgin olive oil packed in Spain but said from olives from Italy Spain Greece or Tunisia for $ 8.99 but it was store brand name Bogopa. I got a 1 quart almost a liter from Trader Joe’s for $12.99 too. And Fillipo Berrio an Italian brand 1 liter $9.99 on sale recently. My point was just that the olive oil was so cheap in Spain that I would bring some home to US every year but when I saw the prices had skyrocketed last year it wasn’t worth it to bring back. Being Italian American I do use a lot of olive oil so I do tend to know prices.
@@tedg4171 I used to buy 750ml of extra virgin olive oil for 3.75 euros a bottle, five years ago, in the supermarket right in front of my house. Like I said, it´s mostly the draught (and worldwide overall inflation), that has taken it to these unheard prices. I actually cannot think of a single food ingredient which has multiplied its value more than olive oil, in a country well known across Europe for its more than reasonable food prices. BTW, I suspect you don´t know "Italian" olive oil is often not Italian at all. We sell cheap olive oil in bulk to Italians, who take it to their country, rebrand it as "Premium" Italian olive oil, then export it to the US, charging 3 times the value in Spain... :D Please don´t trust me, do your research online. Best!
Having lived in Andalucia for 15 years the things you don't get are decent pies. They don't inject the meat with water like they do in the UK so when you cook a chicken breast or pork chop it stays the same size.. The wine can be really rough so I don't mind spending €3.50 on a decent bottle of rose.
We've found some (red) wine that's OK for under 3 euro a bottle. We're going to cover Bodega's in the future. Fresh meat does appear to be less "processed" than in the UK.
If I remember correctly the owner of Mercadona has a family member with food alergies. This is the motive why they have a lot of gluten free or lactose free/vegan products on shelf.
My wife loves a Mercadona. Not that one though 😂(if it’s the one I’m thinking of between the lakes on the outskirts of Torrevieja). Too long and narrow so we can never find anything in there. One thing I would say about Mercadona, is that they are so clean and tidy that when you go to any other supermarket (anywhere, any country) they all look grubby. Their toilets are usually very clean too.
Chocolate in the EU has less sugar in than UK chocolate, even now. Once went to Rowntrees and their overseas range of a lot of their products were done different for the continent. So, you are ok with Mercadona chocolate and be healthy. Win win!
Back home after 6 weeks we did our first big shop in Scotland and are at least 20% more expensive than Spain ( excluding wine). Mercadona caters for most of our needs too but we have two Consums within walking distance of the house so use them for top ups but make frequent visits to the big Carrefour as their bread is the best. Unfortunately The Food Company is the only shop that I can find that sells reasonably priced diluting juice.
Maybe before 2008 when the exchange rate was much better, but not now. Milk and bread are more expensive by a long shot (€1.04 today for a litre of milk for example) and other items similar. Alcohol is cheaper but if you don’t drink it’s no benefit.
Remember some usa products are not allowed to sell in the EU due to restrictions about the ingredients. here in Europe we have some strict laws about quality..... I do not know if after Brexit the Uk have the same laws .

...today I went to the "Familia" supermarket and there was an offer for 25 euros of wines and they gave you 4 euros in vouchers... and I took a total of 14 bottles of wines of different varieties... all Spanish wines... incredible prices.
Thank you for another helpful video. I picked up a couple of tips I’ll implement when I do my shop when over there. Especially what chicken not to buy!! Ie neck etc! Can I ask a question? How is the fresh chicken prepared there? I always find it tougher than UK chicken . I ended up buying mine through an Irish butcher .
Hi Sarah! Thanks for the comment, we too have NOT tried the chicken neck! 😂 Not sure about how the chicken is prepared, we never have a problem with it. Maybe you’ve been unlucky.
I live in Dubai, and I've just ran out of lentejas pardinas, everytime I come back to Spain I always return to Dubai with my luggage allowance maxed out with Mercadona products. 'Bueno, bonito y barato.'
Don't give wrong information. Mercadona is cheaper than other large supermarket chains. It is cheaper than Carrefour, than Eroski... and so on a long list. Look for the comparison prepared by the OCU before making such unfortunate statements.
Remembrer that a monthly Paycheck is 1200€ so rent plus gas plus electricidad plus plus water bill plus food plus .....it is very hard ...in Europe too ..the cost of living is rising everywhere...
Thanks for the video. Fizzy drinks better than fanta/ tango. The washing up liquid smells better and last longer than fairy. The washing liquid and fabric conditioner smells lovely and last along time I try to bring some back to the UK. You forgot to mention The Guvnor wines a must only in Mercadona €2.85. In the UK only in majestic wines £7 - 9.
Hi. Lots of people like the Guvnor wine but we actually prefer the Syrah one that we showed (2.35€). Just shows the difference in prices through! Thanks for watching and the comment 😃
The food in Spain is not spicy at all, so it is normal that those sausages are not spicy. We don't put cereals (?) inside the sausages either, I've never heard of that in my life. Here the sausages only have meat, maybe a little bit of animal fat and maybe a little bit of black pepper, but that's it.
You are correct. Spanish is not spicy. We mention cereal because ALL English sausages contain cereal so people from U.K. might find sausages with no cereal a little strange. We on the other hand love the Spanish sausages. The aim of this video was to inform visitors of the variety of product in their local supermarket. Thanks for the comment.
@@britslivinginspain Yes yes I see, no problem, sorry. I didn't know that english sausages had cereal inside them. Maybe it's due to some historical fact.
@@Ilar-en7lg Just different historical ways of manufacturing things. We like both. We love Spanish food y también inglés. Llevamos mucho tiempo viviendo aquí y nos encantan ambas culturas y cocinas. Pero sobre todo la vida aquí.
So thats about £130 give or take a pound in UK. Compared to Aldi / Lidl / Asda i think its possibly level pegging ! Not much difference to UK but I guess if you factor in the actual way of life over on Spain with weather ect im guessing its cheaper than living in the UK. Lucky people, i wish i could up sticks and move out of this country. nice vlog :)
Food in Spain is generally way less processed than it is in the UK which is much healthier.. On the downside most pork doesn't come with the crackling. You have to go to the butcher to get that.. The fish is magnificent. If you go to the supermarket on a Saturday afternoon they reduce the price because they don't open on Sunday's so you can catch a bargain.. Great over view guys. Food is cheap, booze is cheap and the sun shines 300 days a year, what more do you need to know?
Thanks for watching and the comment. They do a small part of pork that does have the crackling on to make terrazno, but it's not cheap. We usually get our belly pork from one of the local butchers. Thanks for watching and the comment
We love Mercadona because they stock a wide range of gluten free food for Coeliac's. Vitality import for our granddaughter who is very high on the Ceoliac scale.
The Mercadona in Nerja is the best by a long way, especially as they are the only supermarket there to stock a large range of gluten free products for Coeliacs.

But very little in Mercadona now ( the cheddar, yes). Prices have increased so much in last couple of years. Ok, they pay their staff well, but now prefer Economy, Consum or Lidl.

On the shelves usually, with the rice and pasta in 1kg bags in the mercadonas we've seen.
Here is the trick for the spanish sausage. Boil it in white wine. Just delicious.
Sounds good, we must give it a try. Thanks for watching and the comment ☺️
Try the same with beer.
Even tho I'm from barcelona and i've been going all my life to mercadona I enjoyed a lot! NIce video :)

Hi Ted. Thanks for watching. Those coconut ice creams are delicious! 😋
Thank you for watching and commenting 😄
Thats correct
Juan Roig's daughter.
I love your accents
Thanks! ☺️
Yes, you were right about which store we were in! We like this one because we know where everything is 😂. Thanks for watching and the comment
Yes, they do have toilets, a rarity in Spain.
Chocolate in the EU has less sugar in than UK chocolate, even now. Once went to Rowntrees and their overseas range of a lot of their products were done different for the continent. So, you are ok with Mercadona chocolate and be healthy. Win win!
Thanks for the info! Mercadona chocolate is delicious 😋
Thanks for watching. There's also pick n pay in Guardamar or possibly open all hours in la zenia that may also do dilute...
Maybe before 2008 when the exchange rate was much better, but not now. Milk and bread are more expensive by a long shot (€1.04 today for a litre of milk for example) and other items similar. Alcohol is cheaper but if you don’t drink it’s no benefit.
@@pja7 Noticed in a video today that milk in Spain is the same price as in the UK.
Great video!
Thanks for the comment! 😃
Healthier, Cheaper & Tastier than USA!!!
Thats pretty much true of any country in the world. The USA is an absolute mess. People are gargantuan from eating food with growth hormones.
Hi! Thanks for the comment 😃
Remember some usa products are not allowed to sell in the EU due to restrictions about the ingredients. here in Europe we have some strict laws about quality..... I do not know if after Brexit the Uk have the same laws .
Mercadona is very expensive
@@57ffjjimenezno it isnt, especially for a British tourist.
Brik white wine makes sense in Stockholm!!! in here by real wine please...
Just showing just how cheap wine can be bought for. In U.K. not even a glass of really bad wine can be bought this cheaply.
Brick wine usually is used for cooking otherwise nice video

New subscriber - great video. It’s 2 x Heinz beans for £2 or 1 for £1.40 in Tesco here in the Uk at the moment!
Hi! Thanks for subscribing and the comment! Crazy prices! 😬

Just read the description where you have put the info 'doh!'
Hi! Just seen your other comment too. Thanks for watching! 😃
...today I went to the "Familia" supermarket and there was an offer for 25 euros of wines and they gave you 4 euros in vouchers... and I took a total of 14 bottles of wines of different varieties... all Spanish wines... incredible prices.
Sounds like a bargain ! Thanks for watching and the comment ☺️
My family like to stock up and take things home too! Thanks for watching! ☺️
Pues mira bien de donde son las lentejas
Thank you, that was really useful information 🤩

Mercadona is the most famous Spanish supermarket even when it's one of the most expensive. It's convenient frequently.
Thanks for watching and the comment 😊
Not one of the most expensive
Don't give wrong information. Mercadona is cheaper than other large supermarket chains. It is cheaper than Carrefour, than Eroski... and so on a long list. Look for the comparison prepared by the OCU before making such unfortunate statements.
@@carloselver7114 We agree. We find it much cheaper to shop in Mercadona than lots of other supermarkets in the area.

Remembrer that a monthly Paycheck is 1200€ so rent plus gas plus electricidad plus plus water bill plus food plus .....it is very hard ...in Europe too ..the cost of living is rising everywhere...
This is true. We live and work in Spain but the lifestyle is still a lot better than lots of other countries. Thanks for watching.

Thats my local shop when im in spain
Hi Paul! Thanks for the comment, if you see us in there say hello! 😃
I used to always do my shopping in Mercadona but drastically changed my diet so now only ocasionally go to buy orange juice and salted butter.

@@britslivinginspain Ah thank you :). What do you like about the life in Spain?
So thats about £130 give or take a pound in UK. Compared to Aldi / Lidl / Asda i think its possibly level pegging ! Not much difference to UK but I guess if you factor in the actual way of life over on Spain with weather ect im guessing its cheaper than living in the UK. Lucky people, i wish i could up sticks and move out of this country. nice vlog :)
Some items can be a lot cheaper than the uk, others not so much, but overall, cheaper ... thanks for watching and the comment
That u aren't talking about northern spain 😂😂😂, 300 sun shines days a year??😮
In the Costa blanca and Costa calida it averages 320 days sunshine per year.. each area is going to be different and is an average, typically....🙃😁
We love Mercadona because they stock a wide range of gluten free food for Coeliac's.
Vitality import for our granddaughter who is very high on the Ceoliac scale.
Thanks for watching and the comment. It's one of the reasons why we did this video so people could see availability of gluten free products etc.
The Mercadona in Nerja is the best by a long way, especially as they are the only supermarket there to stock a large range of gluten free products for Coeliacs.
Thanks for watching and the comment. We will check it out- we're heading to Nerja next week for our holidays, so there will be some videos from that area in the future 😀
Hey! 🙋I hope you feel very good in Spain.
Mercadona is a good option.

Ironically that is the Mercadona we use, the one at the Habaneros is closer but always end up there. And much cheaper that Carrerfour...
Hi guys! Thanks for watching. 😃
@@britslivinginspain keep up the good work!
But very little in Mercadona now ( the cheddar, yes). Prices have increased so much in last couple of years. Ok, they pay their staff well, but now prefer Economy, Consum or Lidl.
There are lots of good supermarkets about. Thanks for watching and the comment
Spain has rich and diverse producers, unlike uk it’s very limited product, which do not have diversity, and you will not find some basic things

It needs to be mentioned that Mercadona has the best choice and labelling for Gluten free for anyone with Celiac desease. Instead of putting it all in one isle like other supermarkets ( and mainly cakes and biscuits lolll ) they scatter it through out the store in the normal sections but with a big Sin Gluten sticker on the front. Perfect for me.
@lesleycarney8868 that's one of the things we aimed to highlight as it is unusual. Thanks for watching 👍
@@britslivinginspain Apparently the guy who owns the chain has a daughter who is Celiac . . so he knows what a trouble we have with shopping. In the UK it used to take me hours and hours reading all the labels lollll
Yeah. Win-win for everyone (apart from being a coeliac)

"gaseosa" is soda water with limon "aroma" - Never try "tinto de verano" - Buy any red wine and mix it with "gaseosa" - It's dem goood
We prefer the red wine solo 😂
Red wine, gaseosa (or Fanta Limón or similar) and A LOT OF ICE.
The ICE is fundamental.
That's what makes it a good summer drink. 😎 thanks for watching 👍

Include a couple of peaches in regular pieces inside a jar of "tinto de verano" with some ice. Eat them when you end up with the wine. Best dessert ever!
