Late 1980s and Early 1990s: As the Soviet Union began to unravel, ethnic tensions flared up in the late 1980s. In 1988, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, with a predominantly Armenian population, voted to join Armenia. This triggered a full-scale conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
1991-1994 War: The conflict escalated into a full-scale war, resulting in thousands of casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. In 1994, a ceasefire brokered by Russia was agreed upon, which froze the conflict but did not resolve the underlying issues.
Current Status:
Ceasefire: Since the 1994 ceasefire, there have been periodic skirmishes and incidents along the Line of Contact in Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding areas. However, the situation escalated significantly in September 2020, leading to a large-scale war that resulted in Azerbaijan regaining control over significant portions of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding territories.
2020 War: The 2020 war ended with a ceasefire brokered by Russia, which resulted in Armenia ceding control of several districts around Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan. Russian peacekeeping troops were deployed to the region to monitor the ceasefire.
Key Issues:
Territorial Dispute: The primary issue is the control of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts. Armenia supports the self-determination of the predominantly Armenian population in these areas, while Azerbaijan asserts its territorial integrity.
Ethnic and Nationalist Tensions: The conflict has strong ethnic and nationalist dimensions, with both sides having deep historical and cultural ties to the region.
Geopolitical Factors: The region's energy resources, strategic location, and the involvement of regional and global powers like Russia, Turkey, and Iran have further complicated the conflict.
Efforts to reach a long-term political settlement through negotiations have been ongoing for decades, with the Minsk Group (co-chaired by Russia, France, and the United States) mediating the process. However, a lasting solution remains elusive, and the conflict continues to simmer, periodically erupting into violence. The situation is complex and deeply rooted, making it a challenging issue to resolve.
