These ``How to Scream Videos By Michael Barnes`` Presented me the Red band, and, my god! What an amazing band. I`ll try my best to learn how to scream like this
So, I'm not a screamer, (actually I'm a country/jazzy/bluesy mix...though I love to venture outside THAT as well XD) however, I saw Michael Barnes was in it and I thought, ".....AH!, MUST WATCH NOW!" Haha! All of my friends at school were very surprised to see that I am a HUGE rock metal lover! At school I was known as the singer who did solos (like an adele solo I did. that was fun) for chorus and listened to Celtic Women and just seemed like an all around quiet gentle girl...at first...Then all of a sudden I'm rockin out to bands like Red... I love it when people feel free to mix it up. If I (by some MIRACLE) can EVER get a singing career going I want to be able to reach out to everyone, not just one group of people, and share the love of and music and God. Music is (in my opinion) the #1 way to move people. It can inspire someone, or tear them down. There's so much music out there that just leaves people so depressed...Don't know why I went into this all of a sudden... LOVE YOU RED!!! Keep encouraging and inspiring!
that's the point! he is supposed to sell the singing success set, Brett manning is an amazing vocal coach and I've taken his tips and they are working wonders for me. I now understand exactly how to use my diaphragm and am getting better range everyday.
I have been singing for about 4 years and never knew any of this. My voice is probably a bit damaged, but thanks to you maybe I can fix it. This is great! Oh, and Michael, if you read this, that time I met you @ Kingsfest (I was the guy with a Red hoodie in 100 degree weather), I really meant it when I said I wanted to open for you guys, and I am definately gonna cover all of your songs. Keep it up, bro!
Not only did you give me some great tips on how to scream, but you taught me how to take care of my voice while practicing screaming and that is more valuable. Damaging my voice is no fun. I have done it enough trying to scream slipknot without tips. I would have to wait hours and hours before i could sing again because i had done damage. Once damage is done, the quality of singing afterwards is horrible. I miss notes i go into falsetto, and now i wont have that problem :D soo excited!
Guys at Singing Success - Honestly, you could have a monopoly on rock singing. Nobody has created an even DECENT method to do the type of singing the guy in this video does, and there's a HIGH demand for it. I've tried basically every product imaginable and yet it's not been near as helpful as even this series of videos. Please, do more like this!
I also scream false chords. Then I figured out to get a similar sound to this distortion over an actual tone. However, I'm not sure if I'm doing the fry technique because I can control the distortion from my throat and aim it to my hard palette as well. But I've heard that fry doesn't hurt your voice and while my sound is similar to Michael Barnes' my throat can still get a bit sore. None of the videos I've watched on TH-cam taught me how to make this sound, I figured it out by experimentation.
Thank you soo much Michael Barnes, these screaming tips are awesome. I just didn't understand how to do it before these four videos! I am a good singer and I like heavy metal, but was never able to join in on screaming at concerts or along with cd's without damaging my voice. I would always use too much pressure and get a harsh tickle in my throat causing me to cough. NOW that is no longer a problem, and this took about... 20 mins out of my life pfffft WELL WORTH WATCHING!!! thanks again! :)
@hentajus i did not know nothing about singing beside just sining with the radio then i bought singing succes a year ago and it helped alot im not where i would like to be but it gave me hope that i can sing with time and practice with singing succes so id say its good for beginners as long as you stay with it
as Nikki Chadwick said, In this Moment and Flyleaf are great bands with Female leads that scream. also for rock style Halestorm has a great lead singer.
I want to do the song piece of my heart without damaging my vocals cords how would I approach this. I have the mix cd and singing success I love them all I blew my voice rehearsing this song it was lost for 3 months, so I am very trepid about going there but it is a must for my show.
I'd love if you could get more into the head voice version of that scream as i really got problems with this. I find no problems with screaming in chest and part of my mix but at some point i just get stuck even though i have no problems with singing those notes normally. I mostly do death metal and i got growls and the high pitch counterparts pretty much covered but i would love to add some variety with those not fully distorted screams.
Hey! First off I have to say, I have been taking the singing success and mastering mix courses for a while now. I acknowledge that I haven't been practicing as diligently as I should, but I have a concern and I'm hoping you'll help me out. I've noticed that for some songs (like Lost, and Pieces), you don't attempt the really really high notes while singing live. I want to know if Speech Level Singing prevents this. Per SLS, the voice isn't really strained and theoretically, it should be easy to hit the notes. This has been a concern for me, and I wish I could get an answer for this from you, or anyone else from the Brett Manning Staff. Thanks in advance, Josh P.S. fellow readers, Brett's course is really awesome and revolutionizes you as a singer. Just wanted to throw in that I really am happy I took it up. Totally worth the money.
When I really got into music and singing I fell in love with metal and screaming. I love to sing but I get so frustrated because my voice isn't as "rockish" as I'd like. I started out with Joan Jett trying to get that edge and I got that part down, she was a female rock icon but seriously I just wanna scream. I feel like I'm too scared to do it and I'll be stuck with a ridiculous girly voice. Anyone know of any songs I can practice with?
@IdRevision please tell me how did you do that was it just with singing sucess ?, because seriusly , im almost giving up on singging averybody says i sing awful although i try really hard and practice a lot with singing succes but i have only done it for 7 months or so.... will i improve if i keep doing just singging success?
Heyo! Thanks for the videos, all of which have been helpful. I'm trying to figure out what a good practice regimen would be to work out on a daily/weekly basis. Obviously screaming for hours would be a bad thing, so do you sing cleanly as warmups and work into screaming? You said in former videos to keep hydrated, eat well, and sleep a lot which makes a lot of sense, but as with anything I feel to get better, a good workout routine is necessary. What would you recommend in general? Thanks for your time!
How do I get my voice not crack? I have trouble with cracking (breaking the tone I'm singing) and control. I injured my voice when I was younger and it used to make my head feel like someone grabbed the upper part of my jaw and pulled down really hard and it felt like this all day. I try to resist singing when this flares up, though it hasn't for quite sometime. I just want to know how to not let this happen again and to get myself to be able to scream properly. Keep in mind I am a girl. : )
Cool thanks for the tips. I want to start doing this so I can go all Dave Grohl on some stuff in the studio. I don't do it on all my music but just want to be able to for certain parts of the song.
messa di voce exercise teamed up with staccato/slide/staccato. the former conditions your vocal cords and uses a slight bit of pressue to keep them closed. the latter coordinates the chords for a proper attack of the cords. chest and head voice are important but without the pharyngeal cavity well builtup yourscream wont be worth shit. if this doesnt make since id just buy the mastering mix program. it has shut a lot of people up on what or what can not be done with the voice
who is he promoting if you are a starter singer? like I can sing but I've never had lessons and I want to learn how to use my voice properly and eventually learn rock
I notice that as i go higher and actually through my first bridge, i pull up chest voice more and more, and if i try to thin out, the fry quality goes away and i can't seem to be able to harness it let alone make it louder and bigger and eventually develop it into a full tone. Do you have any tips on how to remedy that?
you shouldnt give up though, cuz i was like that where i was like i cant do fry i don't like it screw it, but there always gonna be that place where fry sounds better and its also safer and more versatile so u should still work hard to learn it. it also gives u more experience, credit and respect i guess you could say because your being persistent, and expanding your sound by learning multiple techniques.
I doubt they'll actually see this, but worth a shot; You guys should explain how to get the vocal fry into scream more efficiently because that's the part people have the most trouble with and its also the part that never gets thoroughly explained
@RickyRoro777 I think you really just have to give it time, cause screaming kills your voice much faster than singing. I don't think you can really "practice" it persay; you can't work on it enough in a day without damaging your voice to be very effective. I COULD be wrong, but that's how it's been for me...the range and control just naturally matures with time if your concentrating on proper technique
How can one achieve the very high pitched Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) or Rob Halford (Judas Priest) kind of screams or singing, whatever you'd like to call it?
i have been trying to scream for 3 years, but i haven't ever been able to get ANY amplification behind it. it is always whispered. when i try to push it out there, it comes out like shit, and just doesn't even sound like what i was trying to sound like.
His tips only apply if you use the same style that he does. It doesn't help if you're a false chord screamer, like me. I kind of want to scream the way that he does, but you can tell that in the vocal tips he's going "easy" and not putting the amount of pressure that he uses in his recording. It sounds very different when you're doing it "right" vs making it sound good.
I may be too into classical rock, but is this, RED, inside the "rock" genre, or is it metal? (sorry for sounding like an old man assembling a gamer computer).
So when I scream I feel fine that day and I can do it for hours on end and it doesn't hurt. But the next day it hurts and it kinda hurts to swallo sometimes. Any advice?
you must be having strain on larynx, when you sing high notes the muscles in your neck can have the urge to pull the larynx up and i used to do the same and i had that trouble swallowing feeling too. i think its like when you exercise and its sore. try to keep your larynx relaxed.
i love Halestorm as well, but Lzzy has more of a growl scream than an actual all out scream is how i would describe her vocals. all 3 are really awesome bands though!
if "you've never sang before" or "don't know anything about singing" well... "singing success" won't really help you. You still have to have a base first, learn to hit notes etc. "Singing success" can give you good technique, but i don't think there's an actual program out there for the absolute beginner.
I only feel the pain when trying to scream for too long and my screams start to sound like crap eventually. I guess I haven't mastered my breathing yet.
I scream false chord. This didn't really teach me much... This is fry, which is quite different. When I scream, I sound a lot raspier and the rapiness is very moist, it's not the dry, crackly sound that Michael gets.
@Parsis1 yeah i agree with you. Im not a good screamer at all whatsoever but he say to use vocal chords and from what i know that is not what you are supposed to do at all. From what i know you are supposed to use your "false chords". i think this alone will ruin your voice. So i don't like the tips.
I have the same problem and I've found it's because I natural have been singing in falsetto for a long time recently. So I just switch it the scream to my chest voice and it sounds better.
Also try making a really small O shape with your mouth and really push out with your diaphragm. While you are pushing out try to lower the pitch. It sounds silly doing the O shape with your mouth but it's really hard to do lows with your mouth open really wide.
I have always loved red, but I didn't know that michael is actually that good at controlling his screams... great guy
That high one was fucking nice
These ``How to Scream Videos By Michael Barnes`` Presented me the Red band, and, my god! What an amazing band.
I`ll try my best to learn how to scream like this
I've told listeneded to Red for the last six years. Keep it up!

Yeah, I agree. After watching countless videos on how to scream nothing worked for me. So I just experimented and I'm pretty happy with my sound.
First Time I Ever Seen Real Tutorials For This On TH-cam... Thanx :)
OMG you help me a lot!! I will try to do my best and scream as better as I can, but I will never catch up with you because you are the BEST!!!
Awesome!
I want to do the song piece of my heart without damaging my vocals cords how would I approach this.

been a fan for years, when are you guys coming back to Ripley?
Also, could Randy spare any bass tips?

What's the difference between "power fry" and "false chord" screems? And also what screen technique do you use?
Love red
How can you practice to control the amount of distortion in your voice? (for quick changes and transitions from singing to/from screaming)
too much ads, but thanks for the info that was in there, it was helpful!
@chinoiee You're probably thinking of in-ear monitors. Same thing as stage monitors, but in your ear.
When I really got into music and singing I fell in love with metal and screaming. I love to sing but I get so frustrated because my voice isn't as "rockish" as I'd like. Do you guys have anything in spanish or with spanish subtitles i know a lot of people that would love to learn but they are in the spanish community

when is RED coming to puerto rico ? hahaha keep on guys ! Fav Band !
So "screaming" is basically using 'Vocal Fry' on pitch to color/distort the sound? That's it?
i want something more like ivans style of singing or Jman from mushroom head the low but beefy but can understand
I doubt they'll actually see this, but worth a shot;
You guys should explain how to get the vocal fry into scream more efficiently because that's the part people have the most trouble with and its also the part that never gets thoroughly explained
@Hobbs8887 "Feed the Machine" by RED
@cortezthemusic I guess that hi try tell every body is: you can do Scream if you don't know sing, is way he pushing this method.
what is the song at the begining
@RickyRoro777 I think you really just have to give it time, cause screaming kills your voice much faster than singing. Where's a good place to practice? lol =p just saw red in concert, they were awesome!
3:58 THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
I may be too into classical rock, but is this, RED, inside the "rock" genre, or is it metal? (sorry for sounding like an old man assembling a gamer computer).
I think SingingSuccess wants you to buy the technique program that Michael keeps bringing up. They probably have stuff there. :/
For a complete begginer this actually too complecated for me... he's very though. Good for him you know!
@SingingSuccess my transition between singing and screaming is not very smooth, can you help?
Yes, we can help! You can call our front office and book a lesson. You also can ask about which coach would work best for you.
cold water is better or warm water ? depending on climate,,,,
anil dahal Use room temperature water. Cold water has a numbing effect that will limit your voice.
I'd like some actual steps on how to produce the sound. I scream using my false chords and it's really taxing on the voice.
@medicin2008 yep.
So when I scream I feel fine that day and I can do it for hours on end and it doesn't hurt. But the next day it hurts and it kinda hurts to swallo sometimes. Any advice?

that is explained in the dvds, and they need to sell it, thats why they dont explain how to do it
i love Halestorm as well, but Lzzy has more of a growl scream than an actual all out scream is how i would describe her vocals. all 3 are really awesome bands though!
when I try to even do vocal fry i just sound like an old man...someone help me!!
What type of screaming is he doing...? Fry, false chord..?
I love Halestorm. I'll have to check out In This Moment but thank you (:
has your voice ever shot while recording
Red is "post-grunge". Whatever that means. They're hard rock. Not quite metal, but they're on the edge. Mostly just hardcore rock
if "you've never sang before" or "don't know anything about singing" well... "singing success" won't really help you. You still have to have a base first, learn to hit notes etc. "Singing success" can give you good technique, but i don't think there's an actual program out there for the absolute beginner.
3:11 Whaaaaaat......
I only feel the pain when trying to scream for too long and my screams start to sound like crap eventually. I guess I haven't mastered my breathing yet.
I can scream sing really well, but the problem is that I can't sing scream loudly. It comes out as a whisper. Please help. PS thank you Mike.
your best is high
And this isn't channel advertisement? You've put a comment on every video on this series trying to advertise your channel, Mr. "Anonymous Ranter"
@Hobbs8887 Feed the Machine
*passes the joint* :))
I scream false chord. This didn't really teach me much...
This is fry, which is quite different. When I scream, I sound a lot raspier and the rapiness is very moist, it's not the dry, crackly sound that Michael gets.
His voice sounds like Chester Bennington's (Linkin Park)
So this is for people that already know how to scream?
you should make a video of it...ill watch it.... WHO'S WITH ME!!!
*sings-screams-sings* He goes white-orange-red- stays red. lol
@Parsis1 yeah i agree with you. Im not a good screamer at all whatsoever but he say to use vocal chords and from what i know that is not what you are supposed to do at all. From what i know you are supposed to use your "false chords". i think this alone will ruin your voice. So i don't like the tips.
yeah i couldn't comprehend it either...
chest voice...?
Does smoking hurt my voice??
Why can I do high with no problem and when I try lows I sound like a dying cat? :(
I have the same problem and I've found it's because I natural have been singing in falsetto for a long time recently.
You should check out some vokill stuff, i learned lows from him
Check out 4:59 on this video for an awesome scream: watch?v=_Eh9pBzf9S8 I used singing success. Still do.
more selling then tips
cause fry is the 'safe' way of screaming.
He looks like Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville.
Man I dunno, just do what works and feels right.
Death of me!
Frankly I'd say that if you've wound up on a 'how to scream' video you aren't really much of an expert.
