  • This dark fantasy epic has made a big splash in the genre. A truly unique experience for any fantasy or horror reader. Imajica is Barker's magnum opus, surpassing the scope of the popular Weaveworld. If you have picked this up, let me know your thoughts on it. #booktube #bookreview #clivebarker #fantasy

I read Imajica when it was first published. I enjoyed this novel, and it impressed me, but I have not thought about it for many decades...until watching your video. Immediately, the image of Pie'oh'pah, the pneuma, and woman in Victorian dress being swallowed and pulled apart by two twin transparent monsters from the void where a ceremony had gone disastrously wrong, sprung into my head. After 30 years, Clive Barker still has a surprising amount of real estate in my mind. The pneuma, along with Immacolota's menstruum in Weavewold, always fascinated me, because Clive Barker imbued such power in the most common bodily substances, things which are utterly common place, until he reminded us that those substances were the building blocks of all human life. A far cry from enchanted swords and wizard's staffs. So original, and yet so elemental. I'm greatly enjoying your Clive Barker reviews...your insights are intelligent and nuanced. Looking forward to your future reviews of, not only Clive Barker, but other authors as well.

Retelling any bible story in a controversial fashion is a good way to get me interested. I am very envious of how well you explain and break things down. You don't seem to waste anytime and it's really admirable. This is now on my tbr

The Imajica is my favorite book. I've read it 3 or 4 times in the last 30 years. It is a beautifully written book! The things you listed as both Pro / Con were definitely all Pros for me. I could see some people being uncomfortable about Pie O Pah. Pie didn't bother me depends on how you perceive it at least for some people. Great review, one hell of a vocabulary yourself. Very good.

I finished Imajica the other day and I'm still not sure if it's now my favourite book of all time or if I thought it was just very good. I definitely need a re-read to see if some of those things I didn't love the first time fall into place for me.
I described the book to my partner as I was reading it like 'reading something that convinces you the author understands or perceives things on a level beyond us, like how birds can see colours we cannot even comprehend'.

Having read Imajica years ago, I'm now reaquainting to it via audiobook format. This is definitely a worthwhile re-experience and I'm captured, again, by the prince of prose. Thanks for the experience, Clive Barker.
And thank you for this review. A good summation. Well, back to the novel. Tally-ho!

I remember enjoying it 20 years ago but for a 1000 plus page book I remember very little of it.
Most of his books have very memorable segments that stick with me but I’m drawing a blank (apart from a vague memory of them flying around but not sure why or where).
Even his lesser works like Damnation Game still stick with me with some striking and disturbing imagery.

Thanks for coming out to review Clive Barker. His prose is amazing. He may be offending to modern puritanical American sensibilities, but he's doing it because that was his mission from the start. I bought the hard-cover version of Imagica when it came out, which was an extravagant purchase for me at the time. Imagica is not my favorite, but it has everything I could ever want out of a Clive Barker novel. My favorite novels are Weaveworld, Cold Heart Canyon, The Great and Secret Show and Damnation Game.

A truly marvelous video and succinct review. Well done! I got more visuals reading Imajica than I ever had while tripping on acid and the memories this book creates leave an unmistakable taste that stays with you. I cannot recommend this book enough. On a side note. I read Mary Doria Russell's book The Sparrow, and it had characters in it that I imagined some of the beings in Imajica looked like. It was an interesting amalgamation.
