    Barker's words are exquisite. Weaveworld, Imajica, The Great and Secret Show, Coldheart Canyon... Too many to list.
    His ability to transport you to strange and fantastical worlds is unparalleled. I think of him as a master stew chef. He can take ingredients used by all, and when he's done cooking, it is the tastiest stew you will ever try!
    His books will never leave your psyche.
    i love your book reviews. I hope you get around to reading more of his works. I love them all!

      I don’t think I could have said it better! Thank so much for the kind words I really appreciate it :) I am making my way through all of his works. So far Imajica takes the cake as my favorite. I just finished The Damnation Game last week and plan to do the Great and Secret Show next

    My favourite book of all time, and not just Clive Barker's. Loved it so much that I never re-read it in case I didn't love it as much the second time round. I think I need to do something about that.

    Excellent review! Thank you!👍👍👍 I'm reading weaveworld just now...yeah, one has to read it at least twice, once for the literal story and twice to understand the symbolism. It's a lot to take in, but really liking it so far!!

    Clive Barker is one of my absolute favorites.
    Another author who I rarely hear about despite being huge at one point is John Crowley. He got a lot of accolades for his novel Little, Big (one of Neil Gaiman's favorites) and his Aegypt Cycle is really wonderful (a history professor delving into western occultism finds that a lot of the things John Dee and Giordano Bruno and such wrote about were real). I think his style is more literary than a lot of genre readers prefer.

    The Damnation game was the first I read because that was so interesting I read Weave World and Great and Secret Show. Each time I left the human race and was transported into other worlds. His name is Clive Barker not Clyde Barker.

    This was fascinating to listen to. I was a high school librarian when this was released, and I remember how many requests there were, from students who were all about the Hellraiser hype. We got a copy in, and almost no-one (who had been on the waiting list), kept it longer than a day. It was so different from what they expected. Which the nerdier of us realized by the time WE loaned it out.
    It was a larger leap than many of us were ready for at the time, as our library only contained a handful of fantasy titles (the most adult of which were probably by Anne McCaffrey), so with Weaveworld, our youthful eyes were opened to the potential of detailed, multi-layered fantasy. I'm still in touch with a couple of friends from way back then, and we all have fantasy at the core of our reading habits - habits I'm certain, this book helped form.

    I, too, love the work of Clive Barker, and Weaveworld is tied The Great And Secret Show as my favorite of his novels. I still remember, vividly, Immacolota and her sisters, standing over the last guardian of the Fugue and waiting for the guardian's "devastating endgame raptures''. This video has inspired me to reread Barker's fantasy novels after 25 years from when I first read them. I was made aware of your channel by Sarah Reads this evening, and I'm hitting the subscribe button as soon as my comment is finished. So many booktubers make videos about the same boring cliched books, and it's refreshing to find a channel that explores the depths and byways of fantastic and speculative fiction. If you haven't read the books of China Mieville, most particularly the Bas-Lag series: Peridido Street Station, The Scar, and the Iron Council, I would encourage you to check them out.

    I love this guy, because I know he loves this book as much as I do! It shows, but nothing compares to reading it for your self and the emotions it evokes. The search for the scourge, book 3 changed my life with the shift of the book. Then the dream season and the finally, oh the passion of it. Read this book or miss out on a great experience in life, up to you. It changed my life forever. Immaclotta what a character, who could have created such a woman? Don't know who I'm talking about? To bad, read it people. God, one fell swoop, whoooooo!

    Awesome video! Clive Barker is my favourite author of all time. Weaveworld blew me away. I absolutely loved it.
    And the Damnation Game is my favourite novel of all time, so... you're not alone, Baron.
    The way Barker writes, to me, is just other-worldly. I have yet to find another author who can write at least in a similar fashion.
    There are of course a lot of great authors out there that I love and respect very much, however to me Clive Barker is one of a kind.

    Agreed -: most regular fantasy readers probably think Weaveworld doesn't quite fit the parameters of what a fantasy novel should be. I liked it, as well as The Damnation Game, Imajica, & the six volume Books of Blood very much. But other books by him, such as The Great & Secret Show, Sacrament, & Coldheart Canyon, were too worthy & mainstreamish for my tastes. Next on my TBR by Barker is Galilee - hoping it has more of the suspense & fantasy elements which Barker is so good at depicting.

    Silversun writing to explain that I am an artist inspired by Clive Barker though his wickedly ace novel "Weave World ", and now I am obsessed with working on a new order of dark fantasy twisted with some science fiction! This is my graphic novel, very Lovecraftian and Lewis Carrol! This is Silversun thanking everyone for their time.

    I read Weaveworld a few months ago, and it was a VERY interesting read for me, mostly because of how much it didn't work, and at the same time did work. From the very beginning, through to now months later, I have been very very interested in the ideas put forth in this book. But the execution REALLY did not work for me. So even while the ideas almost intoxicated me, I got bogged down by the nitty gritty of the writing and the way the plot unfolded. It's cool to see a youtuber talking about Barker, which I haven't seen before, even though I didn't love the experience of reading this one book by him! (To be fair, I'm coming from a more traditional fantasy/scifi background so perhaps I just wasn't ready for this type of story).

      @@YourBrainonBooks Your welcome, as you say how he can create worlds on the page is incredible. Don’t think I’ve ever read anyone who can do it quite the same. If you’ve not read Cabal recommend you do, to my mind it’s in a similar vein to Weaveworld and Imajica but as it’s an earlier work you can see a progression in his style from horror to fantasy, over the three books, still a great read though. Sure I read somewhere it was meant to be his Star Wars of horror, fantasy, as it was meant to be a trilogy. Don’t know if you like film but if so watch Nightbreed, but the directors cut, not the theatrical cut. How the directors cut came about is a story in itself. Another book of his i’d recommend is Coldheart Canyon. another great premise. Take care and all the best.

    Barker is a decent wordsmith, however I often wish he were more succinct. I find that I would rather read his books than watch or hear them. This way, I can modulate the speed at which I enjoy them, and interact creatively. Hearing Weaveworld as an audio book irritated me to the point of stopping halfway.

    Very excited! I got both Imajica and Weaveworld on Audible and just began Imajica and am already in, just a little. May I ask you the difference, though, in the psychological themes that the reader will go through between the two. Maybe that’s a hard question to answer, but I’m looking for what the difference in subjective experience between the two may be? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Although I’ll be reading both, I can’t decide which one to read first. ✨☮️✨ Love your gentle enthusiasm.

    • @YourBrainonBooks
      @YourBrainonBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      🤔 that is a difficult question to answer. Well I guess in the spirit of simplicity both are stories of good vs evil with Weaveworld being individuals against the world and Imajica is more the individuals against themselves. They are Barker novels so there is going to be themes of Hedonism, desire, sexuality, material oppression, etc. I feel Imajica to be the better novel. But it isn’t as accessible as Weaveworld and some struggle with its density.

    • @ambermoon719
      @ambermoon719 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YourBrainonBooks Oh, thank you. It was a difficult question to figure out how to ask. But I got it. This was the 1st of your vids i ever saw (was trying to introduce my wife to Barker's work "dead letter office" and the fugue and such) and heard what you said and being well versed.. although its been yrs with high speech and rolands wanderings to secure (or tear down) the tower i felt compelled to comment. But after seeing your other uploads your clearly memeber of our Ka'tet. And thank you. 👍🏻

    For me, book more reminded me to Stiven Kings Testament than Dark Tower series.
