  • The first step to PLAYING IN TUNE is actually improving your TONE (they go hand in hand). Learn exactly that here, for free:
    www.flute.school/free
    -----------------
    Did you know that the headjoint of your flute should be pulled out a little when you play?
    If you're thinking "oh yes, I knew that - it's so that you play in tune"...
    Well, that's not quite true. It helps you play in tune, but it definitely does not make you play in tune.
    So this video teaches you 2 things:
    - The 3 genuinely interesting reasons WHY you pull your flute out.
    - What really does get you to play in tune. Whoopee! (Playing in tune is GOOD).

    Jane - I am a big fan of your videos. Such simple techniques and it save so much time going the wrong path and then unlearning. I was blown away with the rice technique. Is instantly improved tone of notes. I am struggling with two things
    1. how to play notes at Metronome ticks
    2. How to increase finger suppleness and speed. I saw the video of "how to stop hand pain" I am over 45 and just started playing because of love of the instrument.
    Really appreciate your help

      Hi there, that's GREAT to hear that the rice technique instantly improved your tone. That's perfect! And well done! It's wonderful that you love the instrument - that's a very very good start to learning! The LIghtning Fast Fingers course is part of The Academy, which is the paid program I run. To find out more about The Academy, sign up to a free Masterclass at www.flute.school/free and I'll tell you more there. The next ones are running in a few weeks.

    OMG. This is so true. I realized playing instruments like this requires you to tune as well. I remember how practicing oceans I sounded out of tune compared to background music video. But, it really does sound somewhat complex to determine where I stand at with my tuning skills when it comes to adjusting where I blow in the flute. But, I can't wait to become an expert player. My goal is to learn every instrument that's inna symphony orchestra. So far I've learned all strings and percussion. Wind instruments are the only ones I still need to learn, whcib flute was my 1st choice. Thanks for making my flute experience more straightforward. Check out my questions in your other video of playing higher notes.

      Wow that's amazing you're going to learn all the instruments in the orchestra! That's definitely a big task! I hope you achieve your goal one day! 😀

    Thank you, Jane. Hearing the examples was great, but actually SEEING how far you pull out was very instructive. Not sure there is any other flute tuning vid on YT that actually shows that.

    This was so helpful because I play with the head joint all the way in and someone told me that you could play better in tune if you pull it a bit out, I tried it and it was true, it was In tune, but I was not sure and I thought that it was like cheating so I learned to play in tune without pulling out, now I can play fairly in tune except for the high c and C sharp, but when I pull the flute out I can play everything in tune.

      That's awesome to hear Gael with this slight adjustment of the headjoint it improved your intonation! 😀

    My flute (a Haynes from 1965) was constructed for A = 440 Hz. My teacher's flute was constructed for A = 442 Hz. As a result, I push the headpiece in to lock position and he pulls his headpiece out a bit.

      That's great you're able to adjust your tuning depending on who you're playing with! 😊

    Hello! Which tuner would you advise me to purchase to intone the flute? Thank you

      @JaneFluteSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maura, you can buy any tuner in a music shop - or better (cheaper) still, get an app for your phone! As far as I know, they are all good - I haven't come across a dud. Good luck!

    I’m really having troubles, when I use the tuner, I can play B flat in tune, D, E flat, F, and G but the other notes I cannot play no matter when I pull out or in, can you help me? I’m having trouble on how to play my flute because my mouth shakes sometimes. Please tell me some tips.

      Hi Neil. It's good that you can play those notes in tune. If you can't get a sound on the other notes at all, it might be your flute that needs a bit of a fix from an instrument repairer. If you can get the sound on the notes, but it's just not in tune, I would suggest that you focus getting a really clear sound on all your notes. Getting a clear sound is actually the first step to being able to play in tune. If you'd like more help, go to www.flute.school/free and there's a free 3 day mini-course to improve your tone. Good luck! Jane

    Is it possible to tune to 440 if my flute’s tuned at 442?

    • @JaneFluteSchool

      Download a tuner app on your phone and you can double check for yourself to see how sharp or flat you are. 😀

    3:03 take this to an extreme level, and you will get James Galway's tone. Brrrrrr horrible to recap that thin thing

    On my piccolo my high notes (d above the staff and up) are very flat. I have a gemeinhardt with a metal head joint and plastic body. I checked the cork position and that is correct. If I am overblowing doesn’t that usually make it sharp??

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John - you read my mind. I read your first sentence and thought "check the cork", but you already did! Check to see if you're rolling the piccolo in towards you (even a tiny bit) when you play higher. This is the biggest thing that will make you flat. Good luck! Jane
