Please check out the timestamps in the description for those who want to jump around. Give this video a THUMBS UP if you enjoyed. What notes are really out of tune on your flute?
I'm learning on a Yamaha YRF-21 fife. The most brutally out of tune are Bb and second register D. Really tough for someone who is essentially tone deaf.
Clarinet players use resonance fingerings to bring down sharp notes in the throat register. Do flute players ever do this? Thank you for all of the great information!
We have alternate fingerings that definitely help with bringing down the pitch when needed, yes. I try to use them as the exception though and develop the ability to change intonation with the embouchure as much as possible so we can keep the ace up our sleeve when needed.
this is super helpful!!! i just started my freshmen year and all the upperclassmen always sound so good, so i aspire to sound like them. these tips helped me realize some things i had been doing to make my flute out of tune!
That nail polish thing, I did that when I started at age 10. Now 50 years later your videos made me pick up a nice flute and start playing again. Thanks Love it. And still sounds quite nice actually.Going to harvest some more advise here to get up to speed again.
I'm learning on an old 1980s Artley flute. Intonation is tough. You give the BEST hands on theory/concept talks I've seen in a long time. Your ambusher lesson is top notch. For sure, a thumbs up!
It’s amazing, I’ve been following TH-camrs because I’ve been struggling with half of the content spoken of here. No breakthrough. I watch this video once and I’ve overcome those struggles with a major breakthrough. Thank you so much.
I watched this after spending most of my practice today obsessing in front of the electronic tuner. I now realise why this is such a self-defeating approach and why different keyboards/software/instruments can be out of tune with one another. I'd been baffled by this since I first bought my keyboard & flute 18 months ago. Thank you so much for solving that mystery!!
Hi Tatania.First of all thank you for all the videos.I find them very helpfull.I need some help..How to play low C note? It's really hard for me to make any sound.Thank's again.Best regards.
I found your channel while researching about intonation. Very helpful btw. Discovered many things I didn't know. I used to play more often than I play now. Flute was my 1st instrument and I studied at a conservatory here in Portugal until I left to study engineering. Now I play guitar, bass, sax and still play a little flute sometimes. For old times sake, I bought myself a flute with a C foot joint. My first flute is all rusty and unplayable. After watching this video I have a question for you: could a B foot joint make intonation more even? thanks :)
O bloody hell I should have watched this video ages ago, I have been so confused why everything was sharp but in tune when I pull the head out, I thought it was just my fault. And I have notice I sound great when I play out in the cold, obviously because my flute is to sharp
Hey! Loved the video! I just have one doubt, about that last exercise that was recommended to do with the tuner between the octaves. Isn't it a bit like doing scales with the tuner, which wasn't considered a good idea? I ask because I would love to do an exercise to tune the high octave with tuner, but I was always told that doing it with the tuner was not ideal! Also, should the exercise really be done from low to high register (two octaves wide) or is it from mid to high register? Many thanks to anyone who can answer my questions! 🙏
Great question. I actually agree that generally, just working with a tuner is not a good idea. We rely on looking at it instead of using our ears and tuners also have their problems. But, octaves are always safe to practice because the tuner is very accurate with the octave. Some tuners even have a drone, which is great to practice with and I am going to be making a video soon about how to use your tuner well. To start with, I would just do octaves spanning over 1 register, so low to middle then middle to high. Then try two as an extra challenge. Remember to use the tuner as a reference point but rather listen and let your ears do the work. Hope that answers your questions!
What if I have particular note that's out of tune? In my case, I always have an issue with the high E. It tends to be so sharp. I tried to loosen my embouchure. But, I can only loosen my embouchure so much until it turns into a pp.
I am a beginner; why is F sound such a hassle, I can't get any sound at all; would it be the flute itself. Because, I recently came across with it in the attic sitting a quite sometime? All other sounds are pretty okay though!
@@TheFlutePractice Thank you for your response. It makes sense. I will go to a music store and get it checked! Thanks again, you are doing a good job, I appreciate a lot. Cheers.

Does one's pitch improve over time; or is one just 'born with a good ear'?
D is my problem note!
C sharp…. Always

Yes, C sharp is the worst! Flat every time when coming down to it! Thanks for the tips!
Pleasure! C# really can be so frustrating...and even worse on the piccolo 🤦🏻♀️ but with practice we get there

As a sax player self-taught on flute, this is excellent! Also enjoy your sense of humor.

Fantastic lesson. I think this one lesson can be revisited over and over again.
Absolutely love the nail polish trick. I've been using small stickers on all my school's flutes but this is so much easier thank you for sharing :)
The Techie Flutist I’m so glad! I actually nearly edited that bit out because the video felt a bit long. Glad I left it in ☺️
@@TheFlutePractice Me too :) long can be good sometimes
Thanks for the great video! I hear the difference and actually see it on an online tuner.
Gaetano Marino yes! We (and I mean I here) really don’t spend enough time practicing with a tuner but it really does help!
Thank you so much. This video really helped me on my flute. I would always be out of tune in my band class but I think this will help.
Most constructive guide, this helped so much. Thank you so much😻😻
I had no idea that head joint placement could affect the tone proportions! Thank you!!

I'm so glad you said that, I thought maybe it made some kind of difference, but sisnt know what!!!
Really good video thanks!!
Surprised these videos aren't getting more views . . . material is presented very well. Excellent I may say, as I've viewed so many other channels.

Only problem is, now I wonder what microtonal flute pieces would loook like.

You remind me (younger) Sandra Bullock. If you would've had American accent, your voice is pretty much like hers as well!
Ahhhh...she is one of my favorite actresses so I am honored! Thank you 🙏
She's way cuter, beautiful skin, a symmetrical face and clear soulful eyes too.
Lol! I'm tone deaf. Had lots of fights about being in tune with my parents and teachers when I was just trying to play s song.

Which F? Sounds to me a bit like a leaking pad somewhere there or an adjustment screw. Go get it checked out at a technician to be sure.

C's
Kyla R are they too sharp or too flat?
@@TheFlutePractice They tend to be too flat. My director says this for our section as a whole. Especially on high soft areas.
