A 210-foot freighter became the newest artificial reef when it was sunk about four miles east of Key Biscayne. The wreck will be called the 'Ophelia Brian." Chuck Fadely / Miami Herald Staff

@Mitodreamer Because these reefs are also spots for recreational divers. Therefore, they need to minimize the amount of sharp metal and the like, otherwise divers could accidentally sever their air hoses. This is part of the reason why Waartime wrecks are so dangerous. Plus, you can't control how a ship sinks when you just torpedo it, and ensureing that a ship sinks upright helps slow down the decaying process since ships are designed to be upright to begin with.
@@Xaxluux No, I was asking why he would question that they're doing what they should be. I don't understand why to doubt nature taking its course. Why wouldn't they? If anything, it would be extremely rare (unheard of?) for it to not be doing so. That's like thinking that if you go away on vacation you may need to check that the weeds are still growing. In other words, again, it would be more difficult to STOP them from doing what they should be doing. I was just curious if there was a reason he doubted it at all
@cutiepie52400 Because it was an old ship, outdated and no longer useful. Now it's an artificial reefing to attract fish, stimulating the fishing and diving industries.
love seeing these old things being ised for dive sites, scary how fast that thing went down. Can you imagine if it was sinking accidentally and people had to get from the bottom of the ship and get out in that kind of time
OMG, I can't watch this WITHOUT IT LOADING, I watch the first 5 seconds of it, AND STOP, it has to LOAD, I honestly wish TH-cam had more control over that so that we could simply watch a video, Is it really to much to ask to watch a simple video?
@Travellinghobo2 I don't really know if it matters, but I just heard if you change the name of a boat or ship (they mean the same thing) the boat will be bad uck or jinx.
There is no life because Of the sandy surface. The ship’s hard surface allows coral to settle in it, which attracts larger fish, creating an ecosystem. Pretty cool way of creating reefs in my opinion
Yeah! Because then it becomes a reef and increases the population of many species that live in the ocean by giving them a home in a place that was once impossible for them to live.
@colintraveller expletives expletives, can't we agree to disagree like adults. And I said "probably filled with toxins" not definitely, you never know how tiny the amount of an overlooked toxic substance may affect undersea life, even if the ship were cleaned very carefully. Just because you disagree with my opinion doesn't mean we can't have a civilized discussion on the matter. Tell me the process they go through to clean these reef ships.
yeah, cause it's such a bad idea to want to make a part of the ocean which is impossible for fish to survive, habitable, especially when it works all the time, then it's an even worse idea.
@@northstarstatepolitics1652 And who was going to pay for the measly 2 tons of usable metal they would've gotten from that rusted mess? educate yourselves
I think the fish would have been fine without humans building them "artificial" reefs. Whats a better excuse to dump things into the sea than to claim it is to help the fish?? The fish evolved way before anything else, I'm sure they don't need a rusty old ship (that's probably filled with toxins) serving as their new home.

Some underwater sinking scenes would of been interesting.
Ya especially since it landed in a part of the ocean where fish cant't survive and now that they sunk it aquatic life now has a new place to live.
If you watched a bunch of these videos and took a drink every time someone said "there she goes!", you wouldn't sober up for days.
This is so interesting. I would love to witness something like this.

An update on one of these artificial reefs would be pretty nice. To see if they are actually doing what they are supposed to
????? How would they NOT do what they do?

They said it’s a great place to dive but I’ll be too busy scared about sharks. I’m stepping into someone else’s world.
So basically you're not a diver

where was that
2:53 That's what she said!
Oohhh, so the ship will become a scuba diving display!!
toyboy566 Like The HMHS Brittanic
except Britannic sank by a mine
I think that was a German built Coaster, from the Shipyard J.J. Sietas and was built between the years 1962-1966.
@pennyf9 I thought sailing a ship without naming it was bad luck
About the only thing I like about Florida. Well, MAYBE Disney.

how many artificial reefs do we need?
Lots reefs are becoming obsolete
The Pacific Ocean is about 66 million square miles. Most of the ocean-bed is virtually desert, so it can handle a few more.
But won't the live that was living underneath where the ship sank be crushed???

@1994Melvin yes it was the german coaster the hoheburg
@owlcitymaniac My word yes, you should of given him a wedgy.
when the ship is sinking, am i suppose to see the sky or the ship
they celebrated a sinking ship
Because it's being sunk to create a home for fish

@pennyf9 i think its bad luck not to have a name. learned that from forrest gump and his boat jenny.

WHO CARES ABOUT ARTIFICAL REEFS! JUST PUT BACK INTO SERVICE WITH SIME REPAIRS AND UPGRADES INSTEAD OF SINKING IT!!!!
did you see how rusted out it was? it would've cost so much more.
