After getting into music for a handful of years, the ability to memorize music just naturally develops. One thing that helps is not using sheet music after you learn a song. Overall it isn't like remembering all the words in a chapter of a book. After some practice and skill with a song, muscle memory leads the charge to where the music almost plays itself. Also, after diving into music for a while, your ability to recall and understand music in general goes way up, which sort of pairs with your increasing skill and familiarity with an instrument, as you will, in a way, play the music by ear, even though you already know the piece. Patterns and chunks is part of it, and that will depend on the instrument, to where something like the bow hand of a violinist benefits from getting used to the pattern of playing since there is more movement so the pattern is more defined. Something like picking strings with a guitar wouldn't be affected as much since the movement is much smaller and with less variation. There's also the mental part of patterns/chunks, as in the way your mind thinks of and understands the music. Also (again), playing more active parts/pieces helps with memorization - like if you are playing in an orchestra and you have lots of rests and may only play like three notes before going back to a rest, that becomes harder to remember. Something like a solo piece or the melody part in an ensemble would be easier to remember, which sounds counterintuitive, but all the sections string together better and the melody is more obvious - as in, playing harmonies or supporting parts wouldn't be as easy to remember as it is harder to tell how that part fits in with the whole piece as it is only one small part of the whole and doesn't carry as much recognizable melody. At least, that has been my experience. Overall, remembering music is something that stops being an issue relatively early in your musical journey and being able to play/practice for over an hour from memory is not much of an ask at all. As others have pointed out too, it is a little hard to explain to someone if they don't have a little bit of music listening/instrumentation experience.
I am reminded of a story about Pau Casals in the recording studio. No matter how many “takes” he was asked to perform he always had one error, always in a different place in the music. When the sound man asked why, he just shrugged.

I’ve also been listening to Marcin who has a completely different style but can also play classical beautifully. It’s nice to have variety. Give him a listen.
I've played piano for 57 years and guitar for 45 years, and played world tours in times past, on multiple instruments. The goal was to play flawlessly. In this video, Ana makes it appear that one actually *CAN* play flawlessly. Never heard one single mistake, though wasn't listening to criticize. Was listening to enjoy. What makes her a true master is in her ability to evoke the spirit and emotion of what the composer was intending to convey to the listener. As well as accuracy. Nothing makes a musician cringe more than hearing mistakes where accuracy is of the utmost priority. Ana is to be commended for performing one of the most soul stirring ACCURATE concerts I've ever heard. Literally put down the guitar in 2011 after evil people tried to destroy my life, and put the guitar away even more, after they ended Papa's life in 2014. There was no desire to play anymore. So... after 13 years of not playing... and sounding like a pure amateur now, got forced by wifey to do a home recording of an original gospel song 6 weeks ago for the family of her dear deceased friend, for them to play the video for their funeral in another country. Honestly, it sounded so amateurish. When playing a 6 country, Europe guitar concert tour in 2004, 17 concerts, ended up practicing for 6 hours per day, playing every set through, and playing the whole concert through, a total of 4 times per day, and practice on problem sections that needed work, increasing from the normal 80% proficiency (with years of playing only 3 hours per week) to 90% proficiency in the first 2 weeks. It took 5 months and 2 weeks *more* to get to 97% proficiency, and could not pass that point... Playing the best ever in my life. That's how hard it is to try to achieve perfection. Without playing for 13 years, and now playing at about 70% proficiency now, it's like a 4th year student. Not good. What you are hearing now is someone who has achieved 99%, which is nearly impossible. Ana is among a few dozen IN THE ENTIRE WORLD who have attained to this level of playing. You're witnessing a miracle. (Edited for grammar)
@@Trundlecake Yes, I'm sure she has a gift; a talent. Positively. But there's only so far you can go with a natural gift. You must practice like your life depends on it to achieve the perfection she has achieved.
I love football, but makes me more proud of being Croatian the fact that Ana Vidovic knows to play Bach in such a beautiful fashion than all the glory of the Croatian Football Team....
2 yrs late to the concert- I can’t believe I missed this masterpiece of a performance. I’ve been following Ana’s career since she was a child and you will not find a more musical guitarist. The comment that her guitar is an extension of her MIND is absolutely correct. Her voice separation is uncanny -she often sounds like an ensemble. That goes far beyond just “technique”.
Her right hand efficiency is just stunning. That takes extreme focus and dedication of many years. So good to hear such excellent interpretations, but also be able to see absolutely wonderful technique
@@jaikee9477 Actually I've been performing Bach on didgeridoo for a while now and I must admit...the crowds aren't really taken in with it yet...but I keep trying.
This is a masterly played Bach on guitar. Never have I heard anything better. Ana Vidovic plays Bach´s harpsichord into her guitar like it was the easiest thing to do. A transformation that gives no scars. Just a happy face. My face.
The Bible is truth. Please read at least three books of the Bible, Genesis Mathew and one you chose yourself. As you do practice forgiveness, that’s what makes it click. Parents are easiest. They’ve loved you to some degree. It’s actually extremely important to forgive them specifically, that relationship has spiritual significance to God. Remember to break down before Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness too. Please, it’s really important that you do these things as soon as possible. The Bible is truth; Jesus Christ is Lord

I agree, so smooth. The squeaks from the guitar strings are almost not there. But you can hear them sometimes. Personally I dont bother about them, they are a part of the guitar sound, as I see it. If you have new strings they are stronger, but I think this time with Anas wonderful playing and a very good uptaking sound they have been diminished.

I had the good fortune to go to one of her concerts in a small place in Texas. She is as lovely and humble in person as you see here. Her performance was unbelievably flawless, and moving. The hidden tens of thousands of hours of practice and performance behind her amazing gift are what it takes to achieve this perfection. Classical guitarists don't usually have retirement funds. My dad was one, and struggled until he died. If you love this incredible woman, as so many do, contributions are always welcome. Buy an album, she doesn't charge for this concert, but we all have the privilege to hear it up close. I believe she is the best guitarist that has ever lived. Segovia, move over! Thank you Ana!
As for Ana's performance, top notch as always. But I want to point out that this is perhaps one of the best live solo guitar recordings I have ever heard. The space is amazing and the mics placement and selection is PERFECT. Engineers generally dont get enough credit, but honestly they dont often do anywhere near as well as they did here,
Indeed, superb production and technical aspects, meaning this is one of the most enjoyable videos to watch & one I intend to return to, regularly. Above all, thank you to the Artist!!!! Bravissima, Ana Vidović!!!
I agree. I should also add they are helped by the fact that there are few people there. When recording a delicate instrument like the guitar with a live audience in attendance, the sound engineers have to somehow try to pick up the delicate reverbs the instrument is sending around the space, with the fact that they need to mute all the fidgeting and other noises from the audience. A compromise that is often to the detriment of the recording. Listen to the clapping.
First, she’s truly awesome. Second, after her first set I expected gales of applause only to realize there are only about 5 people in the room. At least it’s recorded to share with the rest of humanity, that at least is a blessing.
To every person reading and listening to this; magical miraculous things are headed your way! Every good and positive seed you've sown will return to you with a hundred fold return! Be blessed!

Real self sacrifice in the service of the music . Dear Ana thank you for inspiring us during these horrible times . To find peace and beauty when surrounded by a world filled with hatred .
A Bachelor of Music curriculum has a 5-year Term regardless of your Major and Minor, but entrance to the College passing their respective AUDITION is a pre-requisite. That means enrolling in a college of music, one must have enough music theory and playing skills, already. During your 1st day in Theory class, the professor wont open page 1 of your DANHAUSSER anymore, probably he or she will ask the students to open it somewhere page 54 or more advance pages (I'm telling a personal experience when i took BM Composition / Voice at UP, Diliman College of Music (Philippines). Thanks.
I've been playing electric guitar for over 30 years. I never cared for classical guitar until I heard a concert by Ana Vidovic. Now I can't get enough of her playing. I listened to some concerts by others to test my newfound interest and they left me feeling flat. I wonder if it's just me or if her talent is really that outstanding? Anyway, I take my pleasures where they come. Thank you, Ana. I hope you have a many more years to play for us.
The first thing you enter the church is show reverence to the consecrated altar. And if the Tabernacle candle is lit, that is the sign the Body of Christ is in there. May be the acoustical element is ideal but it is inappropriate to have a guitar show inside the church. This is what the Catholic Church teach our children and here the adults doing the opposite. No wonder 80% of the catholic don't go to church and 90% don't know their faith.
There are other good reasons to keep it around, and lots to trash it and start over and do better next time, hopefully. Absolutely entrancing performance.
Definitely one of them. There are many many more though. Things to be learned, explored, etc. Math, science, REAL world events, not the nonsense from the old school media, people's takes on every subject, from students to masters. Mastery level presentations of all kinds of subjects, and people demonstrating the other side with videos like time grabs of learning violin, etc. which are often interesting and sometimes pretty amazing. Also a lot good humor (sometimes even intelligent humor) often lacking in standard presentations, as well.
@@Debilitator47 When have you EVER seen an endeavor of man not have problems? And I disagree, the restart would turn out no differently, and something like governmental control would absolutely destroy its value. As far as I'm concerned there is something for everyone. The Asturias in the encore was incredible, especially since it wasn't on the program and so she wouldn't have spent much if any time rehearsing this piece immediately prior to the concert. And yet she played it flawlessly with all the dynamics and emotion that is the core to this most incredible piece of music. Brava!
I believe what makes Ana Vidovics Bach so capturing is her way of playing Bach. His so called unnoted notes, namely the legatos, the crescendos, or what we may call them. It is all about rythm. When it is there, or when it is not. When Ana plays Bach the rythm is her companion all the time, and so I rely on her music completely. Never will it fail. If you want to call it "pulse" instead of "rythm" it is okey with me. Pulse is nearer the heart, And heart is what it is about.
I do believe that this performance, above all others I've ever heard, has confirmed my suspicion that despite having owned guitars for 20+ years I have never really played one. Amazing to witness, and I thank you for sharing it!
I ^ ve studing classical acoustic guitar since 1979...I got to admit ...she is working in a perfect between the notes...I never have seen a concert so magical .
It's been two months now that i discoverd this concert and listen every day . Specially Bach transcription is amazing in the Ana's fingers , this gifted lady is a treasure for classic guitar.
Her control is frightening and the guitar seems to be an extension of her mind. The music has a clarity and is bewildering. I've always loved the Classical guitar and the notes fall like drops of rain on a summer evening. Tremendous invention. God bless Ana Vidovic.
“ drops of rain…. “ beautiful, thank you so much .. I can’t think of the appropriate words to describe her abilities to my self. Even the fluid moves ( between crisp perfectly timed strikes are lovely to watch) . I’m sure this is watch angels listen to on their night off delivering messages of hope , love and peace and healing to us flawed humans ) ❤
Edit “ watch “ to “ What “ but post likely , but both are correct….!?! She lifts my heart in ways I could never expect and would love to share a room with a performance…..
The vast vast majority of people who are a lot younger will, however, never bother to learn guitar, nor even perhaps to learn any musical instrument. So by you even picking up a guitar at age 70, and learning the absolute basics, you'll have surpassed 99% of the population even when taking into account their whole lives. So, I say to you, you keep on too!
Her fingers look like the legs of the spider traversing a web. So precise, yet delicate and deadly! I had intentions of playing this video in the background while I worked but I cannot look away from this tab. She has this beast completely entranced. The Presto is beyond words!
Wow! She plays with such clarity and power. I once saw Julian Bream live (he brought me to tears) and Ana has that same quality, where technical mastery gives way to pure expression. When someone does something so infernally difficult and makes it look effortless, that is when you know you are in the realm of the angels. This is an utterly sublime performance.
Peaceful beauty matched with mesmerizing talent, that took tens of thousands of hours to hone, deserves nothing less than my total admiration. It's an honor to see and hear such ability.
To your ears, I would think not to hers. To be at that level you can never be satisfied. After the performance, she might reflect and think parts of the performance were not her best. Keep working to do better.
Saw her at Stetson University in Florida with Carlos Barbosa-Lima. She not only possesses extraordinary talent but movie-star looks as well. Such a lovely individual with amazing ability. I don't use the accolade 'genius' more than once in 50 years or so, but Mascardi playing Bach at that level creates a concatenation of natural genius that transcends 'ordinary' genius. I will watch and listen to this video for the rest of my life.
I admire many of today’s classical artist but notice I like to watch Ana’s hands. Such beautiful movement and placement. She makes it look as effortless as Roger Federer’s tennis movement. So beautiful.
The most exquisite classical guitar playing I have ever seen. I was mesmerized - I couldn’t take my eyes off her fingers working their magic. Bravo Ana, Bravo!
I play classical guitar for four years, and I'm still far from her level, the same way a beginner is! Wow, just wow she makes the guitar sound as clean as a piano and that in itself is marvelous without talking about how complex this performance is, changing rhythm, and hitting distant notes without disturbing the melody !!! I can talk for ages about how complex what she is doing is and someone who never played guitar will never understand the majestic and extraterrestrial way she plays this instrument
They'll understand if you try to teach them to fret just one note and their finger buckles at the knuckle and they say "Ow that hurts" and they are literally incapable of making a single note other than on open strings. Even those notes will "boing" and sound awkward. On the piano the note is already "made" for you. I once argued with a pianist about this and he just didn't get it. He went on about how important touch is on the piano and I agree but the guitar is whole other level of difficulty.
@@andylong7759 Each instrument has its own unique intricacies that require different skills. You can't say that one is more difficult than the other, they are just difficult in different ways, and saying anything else is just embarrassing. Just because it is obviously easier and faster for someone to start playing piano and reach a level where the music you produce sounds "pleasant", doesn't mean they aren't equally as hard to master, the skill (floor) is just higher with a string instrument.
@@andylong7759 yeah classical guitar is hard mode. piano is way easier. in piano u can play super hard pieces at least slowly but in guitar there are pieces with fingerings that it will sound like shit even if u play slow. advanced level piano playing is way easier. im not talking about being a pro pianist btw

@@Trundlecake Yes, I'm sure she has a gift; a talent. Positively. But there's only so far you can go with a natural gift. You must practice like your life depends on it to achieve the perfection she has achieved.

My god is she smooth. Theres no trace of her hand making any transition from chord to chord. Just amazing tonal quality.

I was there, but not in awe.

Engineers generally dont get enough credit, but honestly they dont often do anywhere near as well as they did here,
I was thinking the same thing! What a wonderful recording.
Indeed, superb production and technical aspects, meaning this is one of the most enjoyable videos to watch & one I intend to return to, regularly. Above all, thank you to the Artist!!!! Bravissima, Ana Vidović!!!
Agreed, fantastic capture! Would like to record in a church like that, nice acoustics....
Bravo to the production team! The tone is perfection.
Came to the comment section to see if anyone remarked on this. Remarkable performance for such a small live audience.
Many years from now, we will consider this of historical significance, since the hall was empty due to a massive pandemic.

It is as simple as a click to enter something you are interested in, and a click away to leave, if not. AND you can access anything at any time. What could be better than that?

There is even some excellent wit available in the comment sections, occasionally. Like the one I saw a while back that flat Earthers are like a pigeon that has been invited to play chess.
A heart4 Love❤

How come such a beautiful sound come from a guitar?
This is the classical guitar style :) glad you enjoyed it!
