His goal was to invent a kind of faux folklore and legends which the anglosaxons simply lacked. That is why he drew heavily from sources from the 9th Century. It is an attempt to write something that could have been written 1000 years ago. And as such you can't expect it to be modern in any way.
Stephanie Poole the difference is that back when Tolkien was writing not everything in books had to be about real life people or events. People could just let books be books, but now people will accuse you of a lot of shit because of stuff that happens in fiction.
