    "...We have to become the Singapore on Themse, that so many of us wished to be ..." - don't recall anybody owning up to that one prior to the referendum. One man's burdensome regulation stopping him from making money is another man's employment law safety net, or environmental law safety net. Of course, if they had been honest like this to start with, I doubt many people would have voted for Brexit in the first place

    How can anyone say Brexit isn't working? Brexit hasn't been done yet until we are 100% away from the EU, would any EU country put up with one judge in the UK decide how what they can and can't do in their country 🤔

    • @kurtgodel5236
      @kurtgodel5236 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "100% away from the EU" means nothing. Also, you seem to have a problem with the ECJ having limited jurisdiction over some trade from the UK to NI. This was proposed and endorsed by the UK prime minister and voted for by a huge majority of the UK parliament. As such, it is a consequence of the commitments the UK entered *after leaving the EU!* It is not a consequence of your EU membership that has not been undone yet, but a consequence of your non-membership! It is a consequence of Brexit, not a sign that Brexit hasn't happened!

      This is Brexit. You remember that slogan "Brexit Means Brexit" and the other one "Get Brexit Done", well we are no longer members of it. However, it surrounds us and so we are always going to be influenced by it. Except now we have no say. Brexit weakened our sovereignty. That is another loose term "sovereignty". It means the right and power to decide for ourselves. You won't agree with me, but legal experts always said we had that right. Even so, we don't have that effective power.
      Back in 1960, the House of Commons debated this concept. The argument was in 1900 and in 1950 we had the exact same legal rights, but we had much less power in 1950. Here we are in 2023, we have the right but our effective power is decided by the world around us and always was and always will be. Up until 3 years ago we could have some say in that. Brexit came and took away a lot of that power.
      This is Brexit as we explained it to you hundreds of times.
      Let me put it this way. If you removed us from all treaties and obligations, we would still need to trade internationally. We would then start to build up the same or similar set of obligations. Quickly we would rejoin NATO and quickly we would start to have some trade deals with our neighbours...the EU.
      The argument that we can trade without deals is correct. We can also live in tents instead of houses. With tents you can move anywhere...it's great. With houses we tend to be warmer, more comfortable and live better/longer.

    "The Brussels effect is the process of unilateral regulatory globalisation caused by the European Union de facto (but not necessarily de jure) externalising its laws outside its borders through market mechanisms. Through the Brussels effect, regulated entities, especially corporations, end up complying with EU laws even outside the EU for a variety of reasons." (Wikipedia)

    No we stay out, why does the EU want us in,it’s certainly not for our benefit it’s for theirs, and I guess our MPs who want to go in don’t think their good enough to govern our own country or they personally benefit from going back in.

    Central European countries wanted a signal market then the other countries felt excluded and they join thus the creation of the EU on some point due to the new size!! In order to have a trading BLOCK you need to have a council in other words institutions in other words EU, otherwise Germany alone would be in charge!!😉 In order to have foreign institutions that can control multinational members each country must grant the part of its sovereignty that is responsible for trade at first, political and environmental afterwords, so common policies CAN work. But ALL the other things people mention about the changing nature of the EU and the new powers it obtained all are products of the meetings of the European council and the heads of government council of the EU, not from an EU institution!!! That's why in a sense there are lawful and democratic changes because the national governments approved the changes usually to respond to crisis ( Financial, banking ,refugee, pandemic, euro) In other words the EU integrates and centralize more power with crisis!! This is why the genius masterminds behind the EU put in the treaties the "ever closer union" and if nations don't abide by it, crisis would force them to!! In the end the EU is something unique in the old continent with a lot of problems, far from perfect but is here to stay, due to the common nowadays challenges of the European countries against an unstable changing world!! For me a 3 zones EU must be created, 1 zone ( UK, Switzerland, Norway) in the signal market but paying less accepting less rules excluded from ever closer union! 2 zone classical EU. 3rd zone the Eurozone. In conclusion the UK is in the painful position realizing that it can not thrive WHILE the EU exists!! Wishing for the latter to end is another thing but while this might never happen the UK's relationship with the EU must change sometime in the future so it can prosper!! P.s. If the UK remained a member it could have veto a new and changed EU that it will no longer work for it's interest, in it's right to do so as a MEMBER!! Now the UK can only observe!!

    Why do people big up the EU?. There are only 3 EU countries in the top ten biggest economies of the world & the EU got most of the same problems as Britain at present.

    Perhaps the most telling thing about Britain leaving the EU is that nobody - not in the UK, the rest of Europe, or the rest of the world - has noticed any difference. Way to go, economic superpower!
